Detroit Steel said 06/08, 06:35 PM
Both of these teams have very high team salaries and they are second and third in the team salary list.
Both teams have under .500 records and both are very behind in the playoff chase.
Which team has been more disapointing?
I would have to say the Detroit Tigers. They are fifth in the American League in runs with a starting lineup that was supposed to be 1,000 run material at the beginning of the season. Only three teams have allowed more runs than them in the American League with a starting rotation that was supposed to be lights out.
The bottom line: They are in 4th place in their division, the AL Central.
Some players that did well last year that aren't producing enough this year: Curtis Granderson, Placido Polanco, Gary Sheffield, Miguel Cabrera, Edgar Renteria, Pudge Rodriguez, Jacque Jones, Justin Verlander, Kenny Rogers, Nate Robertson, Zach Miner, Todd Jones, MaCay McBride . . . The list goes on and on.
This is coming from a team that was supposed to win the World Series. The Mets aren't as disapointing because not everybody even predicted them to finish first or second in the division,

While i understand where you are coming from i disagree. The mets were supposed to be the new team in new york, capped by signing Santana and giving long term deals to wright and reyes, they were supposed to dominate their division like the yanks did in the 90's . Everyone knew that the tigers were supposed to have an adjustment period, but the mets already had that year last year they were supposed ti jump out and win their division and make it far in the playoffs, now they look like a medi oker team with problems, an it looks like there are at least 3 eams that could be better than them. Can we try to finish this quickly i have to leave for two das after this.

The tigers have many problems with their pitching rotation before the season baseball analysts claimed that that would plague them down the road which it has. The mets were supposed to have outstanding pitching (which didnt show on sunday) great fielding, and very strong hitting, all of which we have not seen. Bottom line while the tigers were supposed to be good they were not suposed to be great because of the apparent flaws, while the mets were supposed to achieve greatness they are in the gutter

Johan Santana is an ace but many knew that it would take more than a new pitcher to change the team around.
The Mets were second in the division last year and all they did was add a starting pitcher that would only pitch once every five games. Not many people thought that the Mets would overtake the Yankees as the favorite team in the Bronx.
They gave Wright and Reyes long term deals but Wright is still maturing and Reyes did terrible last year.
The Mets didn't have great pitching from the beginning. Santana was great but people knew than Pedro Martinez would probably get injured again. Oliver Perez and John Maine were both average. Not a great rotation.
The Tigers were loaded in their rotation (people thought). Willis could return to his old form, Verlander live up to the "ace" on his name tag, Bonderman was getting better, Robertson was solid and Rogers coming back from injury . . .. all of these guys are stinking this year.
The Tigers were supposed to score 1,000 runs but they are close to last in the league in shutouts. The Tigers also have a worse record right now.
Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen are the only players worth buying a ticket to watch.

Saying that Johan santana cant turn the team around is like saying miguel cabrea and dontrelle willis cant turn the tigers around, and the mets didnt need to be turned completely around remember they won 88 games last year and barely missed the playoffs, santana a previous 20 game winner could easily have launched them into the playoffs. also the al central is a tougher division remember this is a division that had 3 90+ game winner last season.

"they were supposed to dominate their division like the yanks did in the 90's . "
Um...nobody ever thought that. And no team is likely to 'dominate a division' the way the Yankees 'dominated baseball'...and that was in the LATE 90's. Alot wrong with that statement.
I'm also not shocked the 2 Phillies fans are calling the Mets...or at least stating that they're just not good. Not shocking at all.

Moondizzle-
1.yes people were expecting a 95+ win season out of the Mets and were the odds on favorites coming into the season, so there were exceptionaly high expectations coming into '08.
2.what's wrong with stating the obvious-that the Mets have been an inconsistent mediocre team. And I didn't single out the Mets either, i've also tried to make it clear that Detroit wasn't going to score anywhere close to 1,000 runs because they had most of their hitters coming off of career years and were on the downside of their careers, only to be told I was an idiot and didn't know what I was talking about. The only two things that have been a surprise from both teams is how bad Verlander has been and how much Church had exceeded expectations before he got hurt.
