.277, 342 HR's, 1331 RBI's, 9 All Stars and 5 Gold Gloves

Check out some 3B who have gotten in:

Brooks Robinson, .267, 268, 1357, 18 AS, 16 GG

Wade Boggs, .328, 118, 1014, 12 AS, TWO GG's

George Kell, .306, 78, 870, 10 AS, 0 GG's

I don't know why I keep accpting these "Hall of Famer?" TD's, but I just can't resist another chance to jump up on the soapbox and argue again that the Hall of Fame is just that, not the "Hall of the Very Good". Baseball especially. The voters to the Baseball Hall tend to be extrememely selective as they should.

Santo was a VERY GOOD fielding third baseman - but not an all-time great like Brooksie as evident by Santo's five GG to Robinson's SIXTEEN.

Wade Boggs (along with Gwynn) defined a generation of hitters. You also fail to mention that along with Bogg's lifetime .328 avg, he also had hits.

Kell is a bit of an obscure pull, but as a ten time allstar, he did win a batting title, and also was a two-time hits leader and had 8 consecutive .300 seasons.

Santo put together a very nice career, but not an all-time career. He has fought a courageous fight against diabetes, but he is not a Hall of Famer.

Boggs was a bad defensive 3rd bagger so that rips a huge hole in your all time great theory........

He had more RBI's than Boggs and just 26 fewer than Robinson who played 8 more seasons.......

Santo had 4 top 10 MVP placements

3 top 10 homerun placements

4 .300 seasons

Led the National League in walks 4 times

Looking at 3rd baggers who played between 1950 and 1975 Santo ranks 2nd in HR's

3rd in hits, RBI's and games played

4th in slugging

7th in on base percentage

All while having diabtes

In Ron Santo's LIFETIME, (born in 1940), in all of Major League Baseball, the voters to the Hall have chosen a grand total of only SIX third basemen to the Hall of Fame. Six. They are:
George Kell
Eddie Mathews (512 HR's - when it meant something)
Brooks Robinson
Mike Scmidt (548 hr's)
George Brett (3,154 hits, 300+ HR's)
Wade Boggs

That's it. Each of these guys posted significantly better numbers than Santo, except Brooks who is usually considered the best fielding 3B of his time. If his numbers even remotely approached these, you would have an argument. But if you compare him to who is in the Hall, his career simply does not stack up.

If you take his offensive and defensive production, he is a better 3rd baseman than Boggs.......

Notice you failed to counter any of those stats that I listed in my 2nd argument.......

Bottom line he deserves to be in and you cant argue with his numbers........Mathews and Schmidt are the only ones in that posted better offensive stats than him.......

Robinson is the only 1 of those listed that is head and shoulders better defensively.......While Schmidt and Boggs werent even close

Alright, first off, there is no way he is better than Boggs. Boggs has over 3,000 hits (still the gold standard for hitters), was AL batting champ 5 out of 6 years from 83 to 88 - oh, and managed to snag a couple of Gold Gloves along the way (not bad for a "poor fielder"). The voters seem to think he was ok to, seeing as he was a 1st ballot with over 90% of the vote.

To counter your "stats in #2, consider these alltime rankings for Santo:
Career HR - 80th (his best placement)
Career RBI - 83rd
Career Hits - 143rd
Career Runs - 200th!!

These are simply not the stats of a Hall of Famer. Santo did not truly excel at any single category. Even taken as a whole his career cannot be described as anything more than very good.

I think he's a very likeable personality, who has taken on the persona of Mr. Cub as a broadcaster. But that's not a reason for induction. Being a nice guy should not get you a slot among the immortals of the game. I for one am tired of the Hall of Fames in pro sports being diluted with less than the best performers the history of sports has offered.

I forgot to go back and fill in Boggs hit total - 3,010. You get 3,000 hits, you go to the Hall.

Brooks Robinson - Best defensive PLAYER, in the field, of all time. Not to mention still a quite good hitter.

Wade Boggs - Exemplary hitter, great fielder.

George Kell - Played in the 40s and 50s, you can't compare those numbers...

I think Santo should be in, but I need a better argument for him as well.

Sorry didnt see Brett

Kell's stats were significantly better, T-Fo

June 9, 2008  04:01 PM ET

I can see Santo getting in.

I don't really see the point of comparing Santo to other HOF'ers using stats alone. I'd imagine there are players on either side of the Hall with similar stats to Santo.

Bentley...
All I'm saying is consider the fact that in the last FIFTY -plus years, the voters have only seen fit to induct SIX 3rd Basemen. That is pretty select company. If you honestly compare the stats of Santo to the other 3rd basemen who have been inducted, he does not come close to any of them.

That is the standard that must be used. Otherwise, the standards get watered down over time.

Santo has been retired over thirty years. If his contemporaries did not see fit to induct him when his career was fresh in memory, why revise history now?

I can see him getting in too - as a sentimental choice. But this TD is about "Deserving to get in". If you look at his numbers, he does not.

I gotcha T-fo, I was alluding to DJ's first argument mostly. Anyways good TD, vote to the right.
