SIFS Championship, tie-breaking match: After his fourth French Open title, where does Rafael Nadal stand among the all-time greats on clay?
thehemogoblin- Gone said 06/09, 11:12 PM
He's the BEST player all-time on clay.
Between himself and Bjorn Borg:
Record at French Open:
Nadal: 28-0
Borg: 49-2
All-time clay court winning percentage:
Nadal: 92%
Borg: 86%
Longest clay winning streak:
Nadal: 81 matches
Borg: 46 matches
Statistically, Nadal dominates Bjorn Borg in any way measurable that respects the length of time that Rafa has played.
Nadal is 9-1 all-time against Roger Federer, the man who has won the last eight majors not held on clay and has 12 major titles all time. This includes each one of Nadal's four appearances in the French Open, the first time in the semifinals and the next three times in the finals.
The 81 match undefeated streak on clay is the longest such streak on any single surface since the beginning of the Open Era. Since the streak was broken by Federer, Nadal has won 21 straight, giving Nadal a streak of 102 of 103 matches on clay courts won.
Bjorn Borg may have won 6 French Opens, including four in a row, but he didn't do it to start his career, as Nadal did.
Rafael Nadal is the best clay-court player of all time.
Bigalke said 06/10, 01:31 AM
Slow down there...
Rafael Nadal's methodical and thorough beatdown of Roger Federer to win his fourth French Open was indeed splendid and placed him on the path to be in discussion with Borg as the greatest clay player in tennis history. Each won four consecutive titles @ Roland Garros... and each was the preeminent clay player of his generation...
Statistically, Nadal has shown a dominance on clay which on paper comes out greater than any other. However, statistics do not tell the entire story here. Back in Borg's time, fewer tennis players' games were predicated on power. There was a stronger clay field -- guys like Guillermo Vilas, Mats Wilander and Ivan Lendl all afforded Borg a threat on the clay. Who besides Federer, perhaps the most sublime all-around talent ever, has challenged Nadal en route to those gaudy statistics?
Further, Nadal has only proven himself over a five-year period. While his dominance has been great over this time period, he still does not have the body of work that Borg built between his breakthrough in 1974 and his final French Open title in 1981. Six championships at Roland Garros in eight years and a slew of ATP victories on clay make Borg the best.
thehemogoblin- Gone said 06/10, 08:13 PM
As Goatse duly noted, I forgot to mention Nadal's 9-1 against Federer ON CLAY, sorry for that.
I have a great question however:
Is the competition less for Nadal, or is he THAT MUCH better than Borg?
Does the body of work matter? Would you rather have Sandy Koufax or Jamie Moyer? Moyer's pitched forever, won more games, but nobody in their right mind would take Moyer before Koufax.
Nadal has dominated his period like Borg never did. Look at how much longer Nadal's clay winning streak was versus Borg's. Throw in the fact that Nadal's never taken a defeat at Roland Garros, while Borg was once eliminated in the fourth round.
Nadal's got a better winning percentage on clay, and he's won 102 of his last 103 matches on the surface, and he's only going to get better from here. Strange, but that's going to be icing on the cake because he's ALREADY the best ever on clay.
Bigalke said 06/11, 12:10 AM
Nadal has only shown his brilliance for a short career. He has a long road ahead of him. Merely equalling Borg's feats at Roland Garros does not elevate him yet.
And what of Nadal's legacy if he goes down with an injury? Borg completed his career already and proved his greatness fully... don't anoint Nadal until his career plays out fully. All the statistics in the world mean nothing without context...
Just look at those players who won the two French Opens between Borg's 6...
Adriano Panatta -- '76 French Open champion
Guillermo Vilas -- '77 French Open champion (Borg did not play due to contract w/WTT)
Both were clay specialists -- Panatta grew up in Rome, his father the caretaker of Tennis Club Parioli; Vilas also won the '77 U.S. Open on the clay @ Forest Hills and held the previous clay consecutive-win streak @ 53.
He faced other greats on the clay -- Ilie Nastase, Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander...
Where are the clay-court specialists on Nadal's resume? Federer is otherworldly, but he is at his worst on clay... and then there's a dropoff. The current men's game is built on power, not the finesse needed on clay. Nadal is a big fish in a small pond of true competitors on clay.
thehemogoblin- Gone said 06/11, 02:01 AM
He's not equaled Borg's feats, he's exceeded them. He won it in his FIRST FOUR ATTEMPTS. He's yet to lose there. He's won 102 of 103 matches on clay, he's practically invincible on the surface. If you double Borg's longest win streak with one loss in between, it'd still be ten matches shorter than Nadal's one loss streak.
Nadal has the context as well. You yourself have stated that Roger Federer is otherworldly. Between the dominance of Federer in every other forum and Nadal in clay, there's a generation of tennis players who we will never know the true talent of, solely because of the greatness of these two men. Nadal has the market cornered as far as clay-court tennis, Borg was never quite dominant do do that himself, and you can't deny that. Nadal's got a winning percentage on clay that's six percent better than Borg, and Nadal's undefeated at the French Open. There's no other ways that Nadal can prove his dominance other than to win on clay, and he's spent his entire career doing so.
Even if he falls off of the face of the planet tomorrow, Rafa Nadal is the best player ever on the clay.
Bigalke said 06/11, 10:34 AM
As I continue to state here, dominance is about more than mere stats. Did you know that Vilas, and not Nadal, holds the record for the fewest games lost in a French Open final? He only did that in a year where Borg was not allowed @ Roland Garros because of his WTT contract. Yet Borg defeated Vilas in other finals... TWICE. Borg faced stiff competition who were clay specialists... and STILL has the record for most French Open titles AND is TIED for the most consecutive...
And is it really that Nadal is drowning out all the other great clay players out there? Because you haven't been able to name a single one. That isn't due to Nadal's preeminence... it is because his clay stats & records have been compiled against a subpar field which is better suited for the hard courts of Melbourne or Flushing Meadows than the clay of Roland Garros. You refuse to address the change in players and the game from Borg's time... why, scared?
Understandable... because when one stacks up who Borg faced en route to 6 French Opens and who Nadal has faced on his path to 4 straight, it becomes clear that Borg faced better opponents, has more WINS and is the greatest ever to play tennis on clay...

What's funny is that Borg mastered clay and grass, 2 supposedly polar opposite surfaces, and he was mediocre on clay.

i know that, but it would just be another TD, which equals a longer wait for the 5th SIFS tourney.
And this is the only logical TD on the board.

Gotta wait for more arguments.

Very good start, but I agree with Bigalke that Borg faced much stiffer clay-court competition then than Nadal does today. However, Nadal is clearly dominant.
I'll wait for more.

Great opening arguments from both sides. I liked Hemo's a little more. The competition was a great point made by Bigalke though. I'm not all famaliar with the tennis field of the 80s though.
Also, Hemo, you should probably clarify in your argument that Nadal is 9-1 on CLAY versus Federer, not 9-1 all time. This should be a good one though.

Ok. Good job. You are getting way too good at beating each others' brains out.
In this case, I have to go right. Bigalke gets a very slight edge in arguments.

Nadal MAY end up the best on clay......
but right now- Borg IS the best
if Nadal can dominate for 2 more years (doesn't have to be in a row) .......I will change my mind

Tough call here, but I'm going right just barely based on the arguments. Bigalke's third argument was a killer.
