Michael Phelps is The Joker said 06/10, 10:37 AM
My answer is NO!
I'm not saying that his number shouldn't be retired at all, just not for Detroit. If his number does get retired by a team it should be by the Buffalo Sabres. I know that Hasek has the Cups with Detroit, but his best years, career wise, came in Buffalo.
Disagree?

I'm taking this for the sake of taking it. You made one of the most obvious statements, um, ever, and have an obvious h - on for Chris Osgood, which as a Red Wing fan, you should have. But what I don't understand is why you're railing against Hasek here. Hasek put the Wings in position to do what they did this season with 27 wins. So why the anti-Hasek talk.
Secondly, Hasek played FOUR full seasons for the Red Wings, as well as one where he simply started 14 games. He didn't win a Vezina Trophy once with the Wings. He won ONE Cup as a starter, ONE as a backup. I dont know where he 'has the Cups with Detroit' though. Thats kind of lost on me.
I would figure that his best years would come in Buffalo, since, ya know, he played there double the amount of time that he played in Detroit.
Here is why they will do it:
His nickname is "The Dominator." He is the only player in NHL history to ever have that nickname. First and last. A dominator, if you didn't know, dominates. Alot. Anyone who dominates alot wins alot. That makes him a winner. He is the only player in Red Wings history to ever be called "The Dominator." For this he is eligible for these honors. That's history.

I'm not sure why you're saying this is an obvious subject when it's not. There are many fans and sport analysts that believe Detroit should retire his number. I on the other hand believe Buffalo should.
With his time with Buffalo, Hasek won 6 Vezina Trophies and 2 Hart Trophies, thus becoming the first goalie since 1962 to be named NHL's most valuable player and the first goalie to win it twice. Hasek has won 234 games, 2.29 GAA,, a .924 save percentage, and 55 shutouts. Buffalo is also were the nickname "The Dominator" came from.
With Detroit, Hasek has 0 Vezina Trophies and 0 Hart Trophies. The only difference with Detroit is he won Stanley Cups. That is what I meant when I said "Hasek has the Cups with Detroit." He has 114 wins, 2.14 GAA, a .925 save percentage, and 20 shutouts.
Hasek played 9 years at Buffalo, and only 4 with Detroit. Having his jersey retired by Buffalo would make the most sense.

Ok please provide me with the names and credentials of the 'analysts' that are proponents of retiring this guy's number with the Red Wings. Obviously Buffalo should retire it. This whole thing is of an obvious nature....which is why I took it. I dont really care. I'm a 'renegade'..haha.
What the hell. I'll humor you.
Having your number retired by another team does not preclude another from doing the same. Numerous cases exist where players have had their numbers retired by different teams. Hasek's numbers in Buffalo hold no sway over the situation.
It depends on the Red Wings thinking here. Did this guy come in and win you a Cup on his shoulders? He arguably did it once. Mark Messier came to the Rangers, and won 1 cup. Sure he was a member of the team longer, but that is of no consequence. Were the Rangers starving for a Cup? Yes. No matter. He's considered a Ranger.
So I'm not going to get into the stat war with you. The obvious nature of all this lies within the fact that he was a Sabre much longer - a successful one at that. In the end Detroit management must make a call as to Hasek's worth during this long run of success for the Wings.
Michael Phelps is The Joker said 06/11, 07:37 AM
Ooook.......
Will someone explain to me as to why the Wings need to retire Hasek's number? I mean, he won two Cups with Detroit but he was in goal for only one of them. I would actually retire Osgoods number before Hasek's number. Now if your talking about someone like Buffalo, a team that he played for, for so many years then I would retire his number but in Detroit you need to set the bar a little higher then that especially with all the greats that are up in the rafters already. Retiring a player's jersey # is not just about how great the player is/was, but how great he was for the organization, longevity, commitment, etc.
The fans and the organization should be grateful for what Hasek contributed to Detroit, and he did do alot for this team. But it would be wrong to retire his number here. Buffalo is much more appropriate. Hasekwas a great player, and I'm glad for the time he spent at Detroit, but he is not a "true blue" Red Wing. Give him his party, pay him his dues, slap him on the back, but don't retire his number in Detroit.
Moondizzle... said 06/11, 11:02 AM
Ooook....How about you answer my question? You cited none of the 'many sports analysts' that are calling for his number to be retired. Instead you repeated, incessantly, how long Hasek played for Buffalo, which we all know. You repeated, incessantly, that all Hasek did was win 2 cups in Detroit. Is there anything else you can throw out here?
EVEN if people WERE calling for the number to be retired, they are in a severe minority. You issued a throwdown attacking that minority, a member of which I am not.
As stated previously, does Detroit believe that Hasek played an integral role in their Stanley Cup runs? Is he not the greatest European goaltender in NHL history? Yes, and Yes.
You also keep citing Buffalo as 'the more appropriate place' for his number to be retired. As I relayed to you earlier, a player can have his number retired in many places. Not just one. And if they played an integral role in even winning just ONE Cup, a la Mark Messier, one could expect the number to be retired there.
I'm losing this throwdown but not for a lack of a conceptual argument. You didn't answer my statements in argument 2. And thats ok. You're going to win despite that.

This is a peculiar TD. You have a decent record, and I'm surprised you threw out something obvious like this.

I think they should retire the number 3 and the number 9 separately. It's more creative.

Dont worry. NHL TD's dont get many votes.
Why did I say the statement is obvious? Any sports analyst that believes that Hasek - who played just a few full seasons for Detroit - should have his number retired...is a hack. They're doing it for ratings, to generate arguments. Its as close to an impossibility as it is for Sid Crosby to grow a man beard. Sorry.

Both the Sabres and Red Wings can retire his jersey

That sounds like when you tell the young fat kid who doesnt get picked for 2-hand touch that he can 'play the line' for both teams, or something like that.

Hell, if Ray Bourque can get his number retired by the Avalanche and the Bruins, then Hasek deserves to have his retired by the Wings and Sabres. IMO Hasek had more of an impact with the Wings than Bourque with the Avs.

Why not, right?
Hell I think the Red Wings should retire Ray Bourque's number too.

Hahaha well I suppose at this rate all Red Wings players in the future will be wearing Greek symbols and roman numerals due to the lack of numbers available.
I can see it at the Detroit rookie camp now,
"OK guys, who wants to be Beta!"

Ask any fringe NHL fan and they'd think he was a Red Wing his whole career. Ask most Sabres fans and they'd say he was drafted by Buffalo. It is what it is.
