What is a more important position a pg, Qb, pitching ace or a great all around ss?
I would take pg.

ok, I take QB.

Well a QB is a good choice, but the problem with a QB is that it would rely to much on it's players to be important. Yes it has to call the shots, but so does the point guard, the point gaurd also needs to create a player to get other players open (example: Paul when he drives and then dishes back out) A QB also gets more help than a pg, but can also get less help. The pg has to also control the game as does a qb, but unlike a qb he doesn't rely on the other positions, it would be his choice to push the ball up slowly or to play the transition game. The qb really has to survey the field and hope that the offensive linemen block for him (and then if he gets time) will throw a good pass as is expected, this shows that offense doesn't run through the qb, but runs more on the offensive line. The offense definetly runs through the pg because he chooses the play and is supposed to determine where and what the other players do. The pg also has to try and stop the opposing teams pg from setting up their offense and whoever does that better most likely wins the game. Championship teams have mostly a great pg or pf or both while great superbowl teams can have a mediocre qb and still win.

First I'll defend the role of the quarterback.

Football is essentially a chess game played by 270 pound freaks of nature that can rip your head off. Amid all that violence is the need for a great deal of intellect. Eleven men are required to fulfill an exact task at the exact time needed to create a successful play. The quarterback must do all those players one better. He has to know and understand not only his role, but those of every other offensive team mate. He has to know where a WR will break off their route in tight coverage. Must know where to check down to his second, third, or even fourth option. The quarterback is the field general, and tends to be the leader of the offensive team.

There have certainly been great quarterbacks who have not won a championship. Dan Marino, of course, is the standard-bearer for this group. Keep in mind though that although Marino never won the Super Bowl, he did have many, many winning teams that went to the playoffs. That is the key. A great quarterback can make an entire team better.

A great point guard often is referred to as the "quarterback" of his team. That's for a reason. You don't hear a QB referred to as a PG

The pg has to know where the players on the court like to shoot, where they can make the most shots, they have to know who can shoot who can drive, who can pass who can dribble so that then the pg will be able to tell them where to go and not to mention they have to know how fast is the other team how good are they on defense, which side does the defender best at, what hand does he use, the pg has to know all this because then he can tell where the player to go. The PG is also a "field general."
A point gaurd can also make an entire team better look at the nets, they stunk for many years and then a great point gaurd in jason kidd comes and vualla they make the finals three years in a row, and kidd was the backbone of that team. Then look at nash that team doesn't work without nash penetrating the lane so that the defenders are forced to play on him and then nash kicks it out for an open three pointer. Then there is the pick and roll with nash and amere nash gets a pick takes two steps or so into the lane and then dishes it back to him

The skill set of the pro basketball player has diminished the role of the point guard a great deal. In today's game the off guard, small forward, even power forward in some cases is equally good at pushing the ball up court, ball handling, and running the play. There are certainly still excellent point guards in the game, but not having a great/good one does not doom your team. If your top point fouls out or gets injured, chances are your team will get by just fine (providing the point is not your #1 star).

Contrast that with a football team that loses its starting quarterback. When Carson Palmer went down in 2005 in the playoffs, it finished the Bengal's season. There is no more valuable asset to a professional sports team than a true franchise quarterback.

wow how about an offensive tackle without a good one the qb will get sacked all day

I don't know about the OT being more important than the QB. Let's consider some of the best OTs of all time;
Munoz, Art Shell, Larry Allen, Jackie Slater, Dan Dierdorf and John Hannah. Between them they have 2 Superbowl rings. What did those two OTs have the others didn't? Aikman and Stabler.

Definite truth to that Coach. Still the value of an LT can't be overestimated. a projected stud at tackle makes as much noise in the draft as a qb.

goalie

June 10, 2008  03:36 PM ET

right i knew i forgot a position i should've added golie

June 10, 2008  03:55 PM ET

Well, without a QB there would be nobody to get the play off, hand the ball to the running back, or throw a pass to the receiver.

Without a point guard, you would still have 4 other players on the court.

So I would say that it was the Quarterback...

a good SP, they are hard to come by these days so when a team gets one they tend to try and hang on if they can afford him, thats why so much has to be given in return for a SP as opposed to a big bat, like last year the Braves gave up Saltalamacchia and Elvis Andrus for the best hitter on the market in Tex, and they got an aging reliever in Ron Mahay.

June 10, 2008  04:12 PM ET

No offense, but if a starting pitcher goes out and throws thirty no hitters in a year, that is still only thirty wins for the team. Somebody else has to go out and win another sixty or so to make the playoffs.

June 10, 2008  05:03 PM ET

a SP is not even an option they play 1 out of 5 games a QB is by far more important.

June 10, 2008  10:40 PM ET

Pitching is the most important position outside of goalie in hockey. You can get by with just smart play from your QB. If your pitching isn't good you aren't going anywhere. You have to take this by Position. The reason the pitching staff is as big as the rest of the team is just proof of its importance.

June 10, 2008  10:45 PM ET

Its easly the QB, PG is not even the most important position in basketball. Look at all the PG: Deron,CP3, Kidd, Nash, Baron Davis. what do they have in common they are all considered the best point guards, what else no championships. Now top QB : Brady, Manning considered the best at there position has four championships.

June 10, 2008  10:50 PM ET

bucky. Pitching staff is entirely different. One starting pitcher is not going to be the difference.

June 11, 2008  02:19 PM ET

to patrick of course deron and CP3 don't have championships they arrived in the league two years ago. Kidd even though has never won he made it to the championship threee times and lost to really the better teams because the other teams were bettter. Nash obviously isn't the best at running his offense (don't get me wrong he is great, but billups is better at running the offense maybe not a better passer or scorer but at running the offense he is better). Davis is great but he needs a true TALL big man. And then patrick said that pg isn't even the most important well same for qb's they need a good offensive line.
