Not so long ago the English Premier League came up with the idea of adding an extra game to its season schedule which would be played overseas. Many of soccer's loyalists and purists see this as a means of promoting an exellent product, while at the same time giving North and South America a chance to see these great teams from England in the here and now. This idea is known as The 39th Game. Would this be good or bad for soccer?

Personally, my feeling is that the 39th game is unnecessary. It's not a good idea at all. I take two things into account here. The EPL's constant pursuit of methods to generate more money in what is already one of the wealthiest soccer leagues in the world. Secondly, The EPL is also one of the most televised leagues in the world, and here in North America there's little need for it to bring its teams across the pond. For all practical purposes, it's a meaningless venture.

I also take into consideration that this would only be adding to the physical burden of alot of players who's work schedule has been spread very thin as it is. Soccer doesn't have room for the 39th game and we're already seeing the best players live vs the USA National team.

Alright...I'll try it again.

The 39th game is a good way to expand their league's viewing area to over here, and have people who live in North and South America who don't know about the English Premier League to see a game and see it live.

This is also a good way to get more people to be able to watch the EPL and also to put merchandise from the league, and find a favorite team. more viewers and more merchandise bought means more money. That is always a good thing.

The NFL is doing it with a game in London each year as last year they did it with the Giants and the Dolphins. This year they are going to do another game to expand the league.

The MLB did that earlier this year with a game in Japan. They already have enough viewers in Japan, why would they need to go? Well...they wanted more.

Anyway...it shows that the two most popular sports in the US are expanding to other countries.

The NBA is even trying to do that, with a couple ofthe games in China, the preseason games, but it is still a game.

That is the same incentive that the EPL has...to expand their viewers.

People see that matchup, but they don't see EPL matchups. good way to get more viewers.

You've made some good points, but I simply don't buy into this proposal. One must realize that the 39th game is nothing short of an attempt to pick more pockets. I find it doubtful that the real intent here is to offer you and I bigger and better soccer. The EPL's popularity has already been globalized, and as far as merchandising goes, stay right where you are and pull out a credit card. worldsoccershop.com has just what you're looking for.

Let me make one thing clear. For every dollar spent on travel arrangements, ticket purchases, hotel bookings, cab fare, game programs and hot dogs to see the 39th game, is money that domestic leagues such as the MLS (who actually NEED that money) will be losing. The 39th game is a sucker punch to the world of soccer.

I for one, have no problem following the EPL on Fox Soccer Channel and to those who do have a problem with it, why not just book a flight to England and watch the glorious EPL on English soil where it belongs? It's a much better deal since you would now have 38 weeks to choose from instead of only one.

Once again the question is, The 39th Game, Good or Bad? Any guesses as to what Real Salt Lake's answer would be?

It is going to offer us bigger and better soccer, and help out to get them more money. Yes, they might be very wealthy already, but the rich want to get richer, so that is what they want to do. Yes, it might not be for the right reason, but that is what they are trying to do. This is ultimately trying to get the EPL to be more popular for more money.

A lot of people don't know the EPL very well, and it coming over here to the United States and playing a 39th game helps us to get to know it better, get a favorite team, favorite players, and buy the merchandise and go to the games so the teams and the EPL get more money, so they can become even wealthier.

The 39th game is helping out the EPL, but if people start paying attention a little more to the MLS then they would be getting more cash too. Plus, with all the wealth the EPL has, they could share it to the MLS.

Why would people want to spend a lot of cash to book a flight to England and watch a EPL league game? If the game comes here, they don't have to do it, and they will learn more about the Fox Soccer Channel and they will want to watch the EPL on it, if you advertise it at the games.

The 39th game is good.

Again, very good argument dyhard. I'll put this topic into perspective. You mentioned the NFL, NBA and MLB going abroad. Soccer is a totally different entity. Where ever you look soccer is already there. Unlike the leagues that you mentioned. The EPL has been exploiting its dominance since 1991 and it has run out of room to expand. The EPL has its own league. Its players routinely play in National Friendlies. The EPL competes in The Champions League. The EPL players compete in the Euro's summer tournement along with the qualifying games of the World Cup. In fact the EPL's West Ham United will be in Toronto, Ontario in August this year at BMO Field taking on the MLS All Stars.

There no way to make this venue bigger than it already is. If someone doesn't have a favorite team already, then how do they establish this by seeing the one that they'll be seeing? Is it going to be love at first site?

This motion has already been turned down by FIFI and it's not going to happen, and I've explained the reasons why. This is an area that's not new to me. I'm saying that it's a bad idea because it is one. Explain what it is that you know that proves me wrong.

Soccer is not big here. If they play an EPL game here, more and more people are going to start liking soccer. Look at all the people on FanNation that like soccer. Do you think they are all from England? No..but they have seen soccer played, and thought it was fun to watch and maybe play.

That is just because people have seen games live. Games in person is more fun than games that you have to see on television.

If the EPL comes over here for a 39th game, they are trying to expand their fanbase and have people watching their games from all over the world, instead of just in England. That is a good marketing techinique and gets a lot of people to start paying attention to the EPL who haven't in recent years.

Soccer isn't big here, and with the help of the EPL, the MLS will get more fans.

Because the EPL is already big, why can't it get bigger? It might be the biggest one already, but it can get bigger. They want to have even more cash at their hands, they want to have even more people going to the games, and that is what you are going to get when they come here and play, more attendance, and more money.

This is mostly for money reasons and it is a good idea.

This TD was accidently double posted. We'll argue this one and have a draw on the other. Sound good?

June 10, 2008  05:46 PM ET

You don't need to have a draw on the other hand. If dyhard doesn't accept that one, you can just delete it afterwards.

June 10, 2008  05:46 PM ET

And good opening statement, by the way :)

id like to see club teams from england/ italy/ argentina play each other in friendlies in the states between their seasons

June 10, 2008  08:19 PM ET

Husker Pride, how would you like a nice glass of ****!

Seriously though. What's the use of coming into a soccer TD just to voice your opinion on how much soccer sucks. And you're wrong another account. Football is for people who needed a break after every 6 and a half seconds.

June 10, 2008  09:06 PM ET

Ok I'm back. Had to shut down for a few hours because of tornado warnings. I managed to have the other TD deleted.

Wallace, I only do soccer TDs and there's always a goof ball or two that says soccer sucks and then they usually vote against me. It's sad but a part of life. They'll get used to it.

As always I'm hampered by the 1200 charactor limit. It's another sad part of life that I'm having trouble adapting to, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of. This is a great TD topic. I consider myself quite lucky to have gotten it. Lastly, dyhard is a good man. He and I have TDed each other before and I have alot of respect for him.

Ah, these are the type of Americans that make the rest of us look bad. I like how the entire world except for us accepts soccer as the most popular sport. However, it's still AMERICA that's right. Ha.

Good luck GoldenThread

I agree that it's not necessary, but neither do I think it would be harmful. In fact, it may be a good way reward some of the fans who have to watch from the New World...

June 11, 2008  03:11 PM ET

great topic indeed...
i want to see more arguments.
By the way nothing is comparable as seeing your favorite team at the stadium. HDTV is clearly not enough for me...

June 11, 2008  03:44 PM ET

There is only so much a person can argue. We're talking about one game here, and who's to say that your favorite team will be playing in your area?

June 11, 2008  05:44 PM ET

Saw this on a shirt. This is to all those (fake) Football lovers and Soccer haters!!!:

In REAL Football...

We actually do use our feet to play
We dont stop play every six seconds
We're not covered head to toe in pads
We dont suck oxygen on the sidelines
We play more than one game a week
And have a REAL World Championship

So If you cant handle that
Go play that sorry excuse for a sport
they call American Football
YOU F'N WIMP!!!

June 11, 2008  11:37 PM ET

Dude...that is an awesome shirt.

June 12, 2008  03:15 AM ET

Thanks. I kinda changed the last two lines a bit. I emphasized it more. haha

June 12, 2008  07:43 AM ET

I thought that everybody had put this to rest, but oh well I guess not. It wouldn't work because someone would have to play Man. U three times. Now, does anyone think that Hull City would want to play them three times? No. This just makes it harder for some teams to stay afloat in the league. I think the Community Shield should be played in New York or something, though. No one in England likes it any more, so why not?
