They're on fire! After coming off of a sweeped series with the braves, the phills are looking hot. Rollins, Utley, Burrel, Howard, they all have a chance at MVP. And Hamells, he has a chance at the CY Young award, that is if Brandon WEbb some how does horrible the next few months, anything is possible. I mean look at them , 4 games ahead, the MEts are looking so hot and the phillies are on a 4 game win streak, 21 homeruns in the early month of June? Man , Utley is looking great. Plus Utley leads the N.L. in RBI's and Howard is 4th on that list two. Utley is also 4th on hits and Victorino is only 6th in stolen bases, whis is great considering the fast young players in the N.L. plus, Utley is also third in runs scored. The phillies have a lot of go to guys, more than any one else in the N.L. East.

Lighten up Francis. It's June, and hope springs eternal. Sure they are on a roll. No question. The thing is you didn't really go out on a limb with your prediction here.
I mean, they are in first place by a good amount right now. That would be like me saying the Cubs are the best team in the Central. Hard to argue against right?
*DARKNIGHT* said 06/10, 04:59 PM
I didn't say anything about playoff dreams, but as of now, they are the best team in the N.L. Yes your completely right, we still have 4 months left of basball, but what im saying is there the best overall team, not thay are going to win the divison, Utley is doing phenominal, the mets you could argue but they are not working as a team right, and yet the phillies are, their record shows it. Utley is in the top ten in the N.L. in the following categories.....
1)Batting Average
2)Homeruns (1st)
3)Runs (3rd)
4)Hits (4th)
5)Doubles
6)RBI 's (1st)
Those are some solid stats, and his teamates are in some of those same categories too.

What exactly is the point of your TD. You select a a hot team, the Phillies, that sits in first place in their division by a good margin, and then say "The Phillies are the best team in the East Division".
That's not really going out on a limb.
Why not TD that the Phillies are better than the Cubs, or that the Phillies have what it takes to go deep in the playoffs? Either of those are topics that I or any good TD'er would love to take on.
You can't just throw out an irrefutable fact that really can't be argued, and expect a reasonable TD to take place on the topic.

I'm not so sure what your getting at. Why would you take it then if you didn't think you could win. I am arguing the fact that they are the best in their division, you could pick out of the other four teams and argue that they are better then the phillies, and by the way , i knew hammels isnt going to win CY young, i was just joking with that, Webb is incredible alon with the diamind backs rotaion

What I'm getting at is you are going foer an easy TD win. I'm just calling you out. I'll play along though...
Baseball is a marathon not a sprint. The New York Mets are put together to win in the long haul. With Beltran, Delgado, Reyes and Wright they have more than enough pop in their bats. Throw in Church and the hot hitting Alou, and that is a fearsome lineup As far as pitching, a rotatation anchored by Santana with Pedeo coming back strong and Maine doing well is better than Philly as well.
Sure the Phils are doing well now, but come October, expect the Mets at the top of the division. They are too stacked.

Hamels is truly one of the best pitchers in the MLB. Honestly, for him to pitch at a park the size of a pony field and maintain a top 10 pitcher role is great but hes no where near Cy. Webb and Volquez got him by a long way.
Anyway, ALL the hitters are overrated. Have you seen this field? Howard would hit less than 30 homers as a Padre and Gonzalez would be getting high 50's as a Phillie. That ball park and that lineup inflates numbers. Not saying the players aren't great, but none are the best.

Wait you call them the best overall team and only list batting accomplishments and not defense or pitching?

Watch out for the Marlins!! They have a bull pen thats just as good as the phillies and just as good of an offense! Florida could shock the world and win the NL East!
