Name one player you would have like to see make it to the league (NBA), but for whatever reason never got a chance. State 1st argue 2nd and 3rd

Ronnie Fields - Farragut Academy, Chicago Illinos 1992-1996

The GOAT or the Greatest of All time. Earl Manigault- Benjamin Franklin High School, Laurinburg Institute North Carolina, Johnson C. Smith University- late 1950's- RIP May 15, 1998

Sorry for the delay... wanted to see LA go down. Very good pick, the reason I picked Ronnie is because my friend and I were just talking about him.

Ronnie Fields played high school ball with a guy you might all know named Kevin Garnet, he was known all around as a high flyer and also could shoot the ball very well. He is 3rd all time in scoring in the Chi-Town area with over 2500 points. Also was a 3 time all american, first team all american, and as a soph was playing in Nike camps with the likes of Iverson, and KG. In high school Ronnie avg 32pts 12reb 4assists 4steals and 4blocks per game. Ronnie suffered a broken neck after a car accident in 96, and was academically ineligible to attend DePaul. Ronnie since than has had a steller career winning all sorts of awards and championships playing for all different teams overseas and the CBA. Just this last year Ronnie avg 22pts 4rebs 5assists and 3steals a game for Minot Skyrockets in the CBA.

Ronnie was one of the most hyped high school basketball players (before some guy named LeBron) and had very high expectations, check out some of his videos on YouTube and you'll be impressed. Its sad he never made it to the league.

Not here to hate on Ronnie Fields, but Earl Manigault could have been the greatest to ever play the game.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar holds the NBA record for most points in a career. He played with Magic Johnson, Oscar Robertson and many others. He played against Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan to name just a few. When he retired, he was asked... Who was the greatest player he had played with or against? His answer "It would have to be Earl "the Goat" Manigault."

The man had a 52 inch vert (now who wouldn't want to see that). He also pulled of the double dunk, in which he dunked the ball, caught it as it came out and dunked it again. (WHAT???)

He played against numerous NBA pros and Hall of Famers in the streets of New York. He owned Rucker Park and this was in a time, when all the pros played their in the summer.

I am sure Ronnie Fields would have been fun to watch.

But who doesn't wish they got a chance to see this guy perform in the NBA.

Well I will have to say that you had a very good pick. Kinda hard to argue against someone like that. I really didn't know much about him until you picked him and I looked him up, also learned some by your last argument.

Ronnie was also a great leaper, it was said that he had a 50in vertical. I just really would have liked to see him stack up against some of the pros that he was kind of overshadowing as a kid. I mean yes KG was a great player back then but all you really heard about was Ronnie while in high school. Who knows maybe it would have been him playing in game 3 instead of KG!?

I guess my last argument really wasnt much of an argument, but I feel kind of a moral victory if you will in this TD. I think I came up with a name that people forgot about, or had no idea about, and hope they got something out of it. Which I think you also clearly did also, I like to think I know some basketball being its my favorite sport, but i'll have to say you even had me a lil stupmed on "The GOAT". Kind of hard to argue against a guy that some of the best NBA players are saying was the best they played with or against!!!

Good luck

I appreciate what you have to say about my pick. I think Ronnie would have been fun for all of us to watch as well. Who knows what he might have done.

In the end, the story of Earl Manigault is unfortunate, not only as a fan of sports who would really have loved to see this man play. But it really opens your eyes to the reality of life and how great it is to have something like sports to deflect reality. Their are way to many people in this world that have ruined a gift that god gave them. We will never no about almost any of them.

This really brings to light the toughness of what Josh Hamilton has done to fight the demons inside him and get back to doing what he was truly intended to do. Once you delve into that world, usually the only thing left is the end.

Earl Manigault may or may not have been the greatest, it is sad we will never know.

Did Fields play with KG? I'm pretty sure that's when KG went to Farragut...

June 10, 2008  09:43 PM ET

Oops! Sorry if I might have spoiled part of your argument.

I would have said me . . .

Too bad I never played basketball after high school - I wasted my mad sklills. I was the best player on my high school team

The stats don't lie

Gerry McNamara from Syracuse... One player i would love to play in the NBA. His desire to win and heart for the game reminds me of another courageous small man, Allen Iverson. Even though he may have not been a very talented or athletic player, i think his leadership and heart would make him a decent bench player.

I would have used Jason Gardner, Arizona Wildcats. 2 time National Player of the year in 2000 and 2003.

June 12, 2008  01:55 AM ET

Nice pick Joe... I got to see Gardner play a couple of times against ASU, and even though he was a Cat, i'll have to say he played some good ball!
