SFAHW Tourney Semi-final: If you were Bud Selig, how would you change the playoff system so the World Series doesn't drag into November?
gonets said 06/11, 11:14 AM
First of all, I dont know of ANY World Series that dragged into November, except for the 2001 WS, which had a very good reason to do so, due to the bombings on 9-11 which put a stop to the sports world for about a week or so.
Second, I dont know that there will ever be another WS dragging into November, so this TD title is kind of pointless. As it stands though, my opponent picked it, and I will argue accordingly.
Game 1 of the 2008 WS is scheduled for October 22, and Game 7 is scheduled for October 30, so even then, it STILL wont drag in to November.
However, I dont think the playoff format needs to be changed dramatically. The players play 162 games in 180 days, giving them 18 off days throughout the season. There are times where they can play 7-10+ games WITHOUT an off day. So even though this title is ridiculous, because a November World Series will NEVER happen, if it is such a great concern, maybe instead of two off days for travel, you only have one. These baseball players are used to playing lengthy periods of time without an off day at home and on the road as well. So fatigue should not even come into play here. I will expand on this. I am out of space.

Alright...well it was a topic that was there so I choose it.
Anyway...I think that the WS should start earlier. A 5-5-7 playoff format would be better, and that would limit how long the World Series really goes to.
Why do you say it will never happen? What happens if game 7 gets rained out? They will have to play in November. You can't say it will never happen again, unless you are in control of it.
Anyway, if the playoff format was 5-5-7, then that would mean that there would less games to play, which would mean the less longer that baseball would expand to.
I dont' have a problem with it going into November since I love baseball, but since I'm arguing the title, I will argue it.
The 5-5-7 would mean that you can have 2 days for traveling. This way only equal 17 games, which is shorter than 19. In the first round, you have 1 day traveling. Second round you have 1-2 days traveling. World Series is 2 days traveling.
This works out and would be a good system for the MLB playoffs.
gonets said 06/11, 12:32 PM
A league championship series only being 5 games long? No one would go for that. And if Game 7 was rained out, it would be made up on October 31st, which is still NOT November.
My suggestion though, was to shroten the number of off days. The players are used to it, and right now the format is 2-2-1, 2-2-2-1 (or 2-3-2), with days off for traveling. I propose this: for the 5 game set (and it used to be like this), have a 2-3 format, so there is only one off day for travel, and then either keep the 2-3-2 format for the 7 game series or make them 3-4 format. The season ends September 28th, so the playoffs willmost likely start October 2nd or 3rd. By my reformatting hen, the 5 game set would be over on the 8th or 9th (barring any rainouts, and if it goes to all 5 games). Then there can be 2 days off between the LDS and the LCS. That puts the LCS as starting roughly on the 11th or 12th. By a 2-3-2 format for the LCS, it is over at the latest by the 20th or 21st, but if it's a 3-4 format then it is over by the 19th or 20th. Continuing with the 2 days off, it puts the World Series as ending around October 29th. The 2 off days between series can be used for any rainout makeup games.
Dyhard:Homecoming Week said 06/11, 06:07 PM
Okay...if you shorten the off days to make it 1 off day for traveling in the first round, League Championship, and 2 days off for the World Series, that would be fine. Also, 5-5-7 would also be okay. Yeah yeah yeah, people might not go for it, but it would shorten up the playoffs and making them not last as long.
The NBA playoffs are WAY to long. If you changed that to 5-5-7-7 you would be fine. All you have to do is change the maximum games in the first two series down to 5 and have only 1 traveling day, you would be good.
2 traveling days for the World Series is fine and wouldn't cause a problem becuase the World Series is what matters most. League Championship series isn't so important to have 5 or 7 games. Knowing that it only goes 5, makes players work harder for the series, like they do when they are at game 3 and 4, instead for 5 games, they will work harder for 1 and 2 more.
It offers more excitement without the dragging on with the games, and instead doesn't have 19 games to play with 2 days traveling in between. Now you only have 17 games to play at a max and 1 day traveling except the World Series.
It works very good for the MLB playoffs.
gonets said 06/11, 07:22 PM
But why have 1 day in between series when you can have 2? One as a normal off day and one for a makeup game, if necessary. Also, the fiugres I gave are if every series goes the limit, but we know that more than liekly it wont, so the WS will actually end BEFORE the 29th of OCtober. And here is why. In the NBA, if a series ends in 4 games, the next series still begins on the regularly scheduled date, so teams could get a week off. In basbeall, that is not always the case. make the dates flexible so if the LDS lasts only 3 or 4 games, the LCS starts earlier on the calendar. Sometimes baseball does that, other times they don't. It would streamline the playoffs, rather than dragging them out. The players are used to playing back-to-back nights. That is what the regular season is for.
Streamlined playoffs are better and more exciting. The thrill, the rush, of games that are happening night after night, will keep the excitement. I dont know about you, but for me, it is not as exciting having a game one day, then waiting 2 sometimes 3 days for the next game (NBA).
Streamlining using my format makes the playoffs more exciting, more fun, and wont extend the WS into November.
Dyhard:Homecoming Week said 06/11, 11:29 PM
If they make the 2 days in between series, it is fine. The thing that gets it killed is the traveling days in between the games of the series. That just makes the entire playoffs go longer, and just causes the playoffs to take a lot longer. If you make the playoffs 5-5-7 and have only 1 day in between traveling days, 2 days in between series and 2 days for travling in the WS.
In the WS have a 3-4 format...that way you don't have to take up many days traveling...and you can play two games back-to-back meaning in back-to-back days.
The LDS would start at a certain point. Then when that gets finished, you have two days then the LCS starts. Once that is finished, you get two days, then the WS is starting. It taks a lot less time for the playoffs to last.
The NBA playoffs are very boring and I'm glad no other sport does it that way. The streamlining would help and make the playoffs not last into November.
My way is the best solution for this.

Go back to a 154 game schedule. There's no reason for it to be snowing anywhere during basbeall season.

I hate to bring this up, but you do know nothing was "bombed" on 9/11, they hijacked planes

True....154 would be good. But never on God's green earth will you convince the owners to give up home game income - even if its miniscule.
Either you cut out the wildcard, schedule ACTUAL double headers on Sundays, or start the season when its snowing in March.
I have no problem with it ending in November by the way. I love the atmosphere.

Large passenger planes filled with JP-4 and deliberately flown into buildings are bombs, I don't care what you say.

yeah dude I know, I am originally from Jersey, and I saw the smoke from my window on that day. If you want to be technical, no there was not a bombing with a bomb, but the plane served that purpose.

i also have no problem with it ending in November, but it really isnt an issue considering it has only once been hled in November, and that was 2001

I don't have a problem either....but I just wanted the topic cuz I thought it would be fun to do and the best one to choose out of the 3 that were there.
I wasn't aware of it only happening once though.
