If Tim Donaghy is right, that the NBA did fix game 6 of the 2002 west finals, the Lakers 2002 NBA Title should have an asterik next to it

If what Tim Donaghy is saying is right, and I wouldnt be shocked if it was, the Lakers 2002 NBA title should have an asterik next to it bc LA wouldnt have even gotten to the Finals if not for a fix perpitrated by the league offices. The Kings would have won the West.

Plenty of people are calling for Bonds records to be given an asterik by he alleged steroid use. People said had the Pats gone 19-0 they should have also had an asterik over spygate. Well the Lakers winning the West as the result of a fix is just as bad, and just as deserving of an asterik.

"If what Tim Donaghy is saying is right, and I wouldnt be shocked if it was, the Lakers 2002 NBA title should have an asterik next to it bc LA wouldnt have even gotten to the Finals if not for a fix perpitrated by the league offices. The Kings would have won the West."

But what if he isn't telling the truth? What if he is lying to the whole NBA? Remember, we are hearing this from the guy who gambled on some games, even some that he coached. Even so, if he is not lying, they didn't have a complete 100% chance.

Even if it was fixed, they had no guareentee that the the Lakers were going to win the 2002 NBA Finals against the Nets. The whole Tim Donaghy thing has nothing to do with them winning the Finals. Only Game 6 of the Western Confence Finals. And they had no guareentees on Game 7, either, because from what we know right now, nobody messed with Game 7.

More to come..

the Lakers wouldnt even have gotten to the Finals if the game was called fairly and they werent given 27 frer throws. And lets not forget how the refs ignored fould committed by the lakers.

Were not speculating on whether or not donaghy is right, but IF what he says is proven to be true, than the Lakers won the 2002 title as a direct result of cheating, even though the Lakers themselves did not perpitrate the fix themselves. And the fact that LA won game 7 is meaningless bc if not for the 27 free throws they got in the 4th in game 6, there wouldnt have been a game 7.

People have been quick to throw the Patriots and Barry Bonds under the bus for cheating. If this allegation is true than the Lakers won the 2002 Title as a direct result of cheating. There should be an asterik. They wouldnt have gotten there had the NBA called the game fairly. Anybody who thinks the Lakers shouldnt get an asterik should also agree that Bonds should not get an asterik bc theres no smoking gun saying that bonds took roids, just like theres no smoking gun saying game 6 was fixed. But IF it was, there should be an asterik.

"the Lakers wouldnt even have gotten to the Finals if the game was called fairly and they werent given 27 frer throws. And lets not forget how the refs ignored fould committed by the lakers."

But why give the Lakers an asterik? They had no idea what was going on. You have to remeber, this guy has betted on games in the NBA, even some of of his own. Why should we believe him? The Kings, like you said, had nine chances to make free throws. It is not the leagues fault that they couldn't make their free throws. And plus, just because they won Game 6, there was no guareentee on Game 7 or the NBA Finals.

Ok, so we should just say the Lakers title is legit even though they werent the better team coming out of thier own conference. Even though they need the assistance of league to even get to the finals. You cant point to game 7 bc there wouldnt have been a game 1 had the game been called fairly. Nor would the lakers had won had they not been given 27 free throws in 4th

And once again were not debating how to take donaghy's statement. Remember were debating what should be dont IF it is true. If its true the Lakers should have an asterik next to thier 2002 title bc theres now doubt that they would have won it w/o league assistance. Just like we doubt that Bonds would hae broken the HR record

If what donaghy says is true, the Lakers 2002 Title will have come as a result of the most severe and most appaling act ever in sports. To fix a playoff series is more severe of an infraction than spygate and steroids combined, and the Lakers, the team who benefitted from cheating, should have an eternal doubt cast upon thier 2002 title. Hence the *

The Lakers still get to keep the 2002 title, it just now has doubt cast over it, the other 2 they won are still uncontested.

"People have been quick to throw the Patriots and Barry Bonds under the bus for cheating. If this allegation is true than the Lakers won the 2002 Title as a direct result of cheating."

That's because we had proof that they did it! Barry Bonds was found out, there is no telling the league that he didn't, and the Patriots were found out, too! The point is that there is no proof at all. How do we know? Maybe the Lakers didn't have a lot of fouls. I wouldn't know because I was six back then, but still their is no proof that the league tried to make the Lakers win the Confrence Finals. And like I have told you two times already, they had no lock on winning the Finals.

if game 6 wasnt fixed for them to win, there wouldnt have been a game 7 or finals appearance by the lakers. vote left

An asterisk? You can't punish the Lakers. I'm sorry, regardless of the situation, this kind of thing transcends any one team and indicts the game - if its true. Sticking an asterisk there would be a cowardly move by the league. Not possible at all.

June 12, 2008  09:46 AM ET

I don't think the Lakers are deserving of an asterik - this is all speculation. Tim Donaghy is going to bring down anyone he can - why tarnish the NBA w/ unprovable accusations????
Unless someone with some credibillity steps forward and says, "WE FIXED GAME 6," this will never be proven.

June 12, 2008  09:50 AM ET

hes saying that IF it is true and proven. so this whole TD is based on the speculation coming true... and if its true, whether the lakers had anything to do with it or not, there should be an astericks because they won in light of cheating.

i personally believe it is true, and do believe the nba pursuades games ESPECIALLY with this years finals... NBA made sure it was going to be celts-lakers

I this one is true how many of Jordan's titles did the same thing happen?

June 12, 2008  09:59 AM ET

If the allegations are true, then the integrity of the entire league and the legitimacy of every game or series played is now called in to question. You can not pick and choose one series and punish the Lakers.

June 12, 2008  10:03 AM ET

Good point Coach/ do we start questioning at the beginning of Sterns time or before that?

Ultra-Conservatives are not generally known to be Naive. They generally trust no-one but themselves. If you are going to make a political statement where it really doesn't belong in the first place, at least be accurate!

^ just kidding...even if Donaghy wasnt lying, whcih i dont believe he was, the result stands...and lets face it, the Lakers didnt need the refs to help them out...they were good enough to do it on their own and would have anyay, because the Kings were the choke artists of the 90s

There are no asterisks to be given. Not for the Lakers. Not for the Patriots. Not for any other team suspected of receiving some untoward type of assistance or luck.

You can't unbake a cake. All you can do is get the recipe right the next time so that your guests don't end up vomiting profusely all over themselves.
