Were the Browns for Real in 2007? (Elite TD Tourney Round 1)

Had to start to tourney early as I'm moving next week.

Anyway I'm going to say NO they were not for real.
Here's my reasoning...

Their Defense was dreadful & the key to a good team is a good Defense. They couldn't stop the pass or the run in 07

Look at the defensive stats from last year...
21st in points against (23.9/gm)
30th in total yds against (359.6/gm)
24th in passing yds against (230.1/gm)
27th in rushing yds against (129.5/gm)

They were 3-3 against their counterparts in the AFC North going...
0-2 vs Steelers (10-6)
1-1 vs Bengals (7-9)
2-0 vs Ravens (5-11)

That loss against the Bengals in week 16 killed their playoff chances. They win it & they would have won the division & made the playoffs.

Their defensive rank was similar to those same Bengals in 07.
The Bengals were 24th in points against, 27th in total yards against, 26th in passing yards against & 21st in rushing yards against.

In order to be 'for real' a team needs to be have a much better balance on both sides of the ball. How can a team like the Browns be expected to win a divison and make the playoffs when their defense is in the bottom 1/3 of NFL?

Offense in 2nd argument..

A turnaround from 4-12 one year to 10-6 the next is not be some miracle, Foosball. They still had somewhat of a change on the defensive side of the ball.

Don't get me wrong, stats can show a lot of things, but by the end of the season the Browns' defense had greatly improved. In their last four games, they did not give up more than 19 points in any of them, which included a shutout of the Bills and holding the 49ers to only 7 points. Now, I realize neither of those teams were all that great, but consider this: In 2006, NOT ONCE did the Browns hold their opponent under 10 points in a game.

The defense is improving for them. They started to show that towards the end of the year and will prove it this year.

Foosball, I realize the loss to the Bengals killed them, but they only gave up 19 points in the game! It's not like they gave up 35 points. That game could IN NO WAY be blamed on the defense. Derek Anderson was only 29-48 throwing with two touchdowns to FOUR interceptions.

Stop making their defense out to be so bad. It was improving and was showing how good it can be at the end of last season. Their balance was getting better as the season went on. Stats don't show that

When the D is in the bottom 1/3 of the NFL how could they be 4 real?
Im glad u brought up Anderson & the loss 2 Cinny it leads me into my agrument
Anderson yes, made the pro bowl as an inj sub but he wasnt even the starter 4 the start of the season
Lets look at his #s in 07
QB rating 82.5 ranked 17th below Sage Rosenfels & Pennington
Threw 29 TD but had 19 INT 2nd most in the NFL -Kitna E.Manning & Palmer had 20
Comp Rate 56.5% 28th in NFL below Tarvaris Jackson 58.2 & Brodie Croyle 56.7
Anderson benefited from a few things-
A higher focus on the run. Run plays went from 372 in 06 to 440 in 07. With opposing Ds having to play the run more gave him xtra time 2 throw the ball explaining the 29TDs & 3700 yds but also the 19 INTs
But with more focus on the run the Oline gave up the same amount of Sacks in 07 as 06, 28.

But lets look at those 3 losses to the AFC North
Wk1 Roethlisberger has 4 TD on the Browns D, Pitt forced 5 turnovers & had 6 sacks Score 34-7 Pitt
Wk 10 The Browns get 0 pts in the 2nd half from their O & only 1 1st down Score 31-28 Pitt
Wk 16 4 INTs by Anderson vs the 24th ranked D says it all Score 19-14 Cinny & Pitt clinched the AFC North with the loss

I don't care where their defense ranked overall, Foosball. You're not refuting what I said. I am talking about how they improved from the start of the season to the end, which they obviously did. Putting together the entire season is not all that fair, in my opinion.

Anderson was a Pro-Bowler last year, as you mentioned, but he, just like the defense, improved as the season progressed. In the first 8 weeks of the season, he threw over 250 yards only twice. In the remaining 9 games, he threw over 250 yards FIVE TIMES.

Regarding QB rating, the SB-winning QB ranked 25th in the League in that category. How important is it really?

Concerning interceptions, one of the greatest QBs of this era holds the record for most career interceptions. (Brett Favre with 288) That same quarterback has a CAREER rating of only 85.7. So I ask you again, how important is it really?

Your mention of a focus on the running game actually helps my argument. That means the Browns had a balanced attack last season. I'm pretty sure that's good and only helps my case for their being for real.

In those 3 losses, they were blown out once at the start of the year. No one is consistent every week.NoRoom

Yes I am completely refuting your argument.
Anderson is a mediocre QB at best. A good QB would not have thrown 19 picks (2nd most in the NFL) and be in the bottom half of the NFL in QB rating and Completion Rate.
I guess by that argument you feel that Chad Pennington & Tarvaris Jackson are good QBs as they were was better than Anderson in QB rating and Completion Rate respectively. And Anderson doesn't go to the Pro Bowl if Brady decides to play in it.

And the Giants D won the Super Bowl for the Giants, that & one good scoring drive. Without the dominance by the Giants D they don't even make the Super Bowl. Just goes to show you the importance of a good D.

When the chips were down and they had a chance to control their own faith and clinch a playoff spot they blew it and Anderson throws 4 INTs against one of the worst D's in the league. The same D that they ran up 51 points on in wk 2.

You don't care where there D ranks overall? With a better D last year they would have made the playoffs and possibly won the division. With less INTs by Anderson they win that wk 16 game & make the playoffs. Then we could have considered them for real.

You didn't refute the fact that their defense was getting better by the end of the year. All you did was repeat that they were in the bottom third.

Okay, yes, he had 19 INTs, but he also had 29 TDs. That's a +10, okay. Drew Brees was +10 as well. Tony Romo, a top 5 QB in the stat you seem to love (QB rating) also threw 19 picks last season.

Also, you failed to respond to the fact that great quarterbacks (such as Favre) can, in fact, throw an above average number of interceptions. Chad Pennington threw 10 touchdowns to Anderson's 29. Jackson threw 9.

You're right; I don't care where the D ranks overall. If you were paying attention to my argument, you would understand why. Because THEY IMPROVED as the season went along. If they had had Anderson as their QB the entire season, I see them making the playoffs. You also can't forget the fact that the Colts practically ushered the Titans into the playoffs.

Bottom Line: The Browns have a solid D, not a great one, but a solid one at the least to go with their dynamic offense of Anderson, Edwards, Winslow, and Jamal Lewis. You also can't forget their special teams with Josh Cribbs. They are FOR REAL.

Oh, sorry, I was at the doctor's yesterday and was busy. I don't have time right now but I should have it argued as late as 1 or 2 this afternoon, eastern time.

Their schedule isn't that bad and FRYE well he's not their to lose the for 2 games!!!

oops he's not there to lose the first 2 games

Foosball has better argument, and is right. vote left.

Browns were a choke loss at Cincy from making the playoffs instead of Tennesse who backed in against the Colts bench warmers in the last game of the year. Derek Anderson, Jamal Lewis, Braylon Edwards, and KW Jr all can put together enough offense to compensate for a mediocre D and get them a wildcard this year.

Wow...GOAT arguing something NOT basketball and he did a good job at that too. I gotta give my vote to him.
