*All stats are from 1919 and before*

My choice for the best MLB pitcher before 1919 is Cy Young.

He has a career record of 511-316.
He has a career ERA of 2.63.
He has 2798 career strikeouts.
He won the 1901 AL Triple Crown for pitchers
1st All-time in wins with 511
1st All-time in IP with 7354 2/3
1st All-time in games started with 815.
1st All-time in complete games with 749
He won a World Series in 1903.
He won the AL Pennant in 1903 and 1904.
He pitched three no-hitters in his career.
he pitched a perfect game in 1904, which was the 1st perfet game of baseball's "Modern Era"
Boston Red Sox career leader in WHIP (0.97), walks/9 IP (0.99), and complete games (275) stats while he was on the Red Sox
He was elected into the HOF election in 1937.
He has the Cy Young Award named after him.
Won 30 games in a season 5 times.
Won 20+ games in a season 15 times.
76 career shutouts which is 4th most in MLB history
He has the most losses in MLB history with 316. The only other player with 300 losses is Pud Galvin.

Ok,considering there is only one pitcher who even competed with Young in this ERA,I'll have to go with the "Big Train" Walter Johnson.

Walter won 297 games and lost 191 from 1907-1919.Now there are several factors to consider in his winning pct.He won .643 of his games.

There was a saying in Washington during this time period"Washington, first in politics, last in the American League" so as you can see they was not on many good Senators teams.

Example of how many times he was done over by his own team.

1907:1.88 ERA 5 wins 9 losses
1908:1.65 ERA 14-14
1909:2.22 ERA 13 wins 25 losses

Now if you're a pitcher, wouldn't this just come off as despicable? How many countless more games could he have won?

Yes Young had 76 SHO,but Johnson had 86 in 376 LESS GAMES STARTED!Think of all the better stats Walter would have!He had a complete game in 388 of those 439 GS.In that many less games he had only 189 less strike outs!

Walter's ERA in this time was consistently in the 2.00's and 1.00's.While Young usually hovered around the 3.00's and 2.00's(got in the 1.00's twice I believe)
Walter recorded an ERA of 1.14 in 1913 along with 36 wins and 7 losses while also getting MVP.

Walter Johnson might've have won .643% of his games pitched, but Cy Young got 511 wins before 1919! What Young did was just amazing.

There isn't going to be a pitcher that is going to break that record, and I believe that this very record will stand for eternity. Anyway, this record also came along with several great ERA years.

Walter Johnson might've played on a bad team, but I don't see a pitchers award handed out to the greatest pitcher of each league each season that is called the Walter Johnson Award. I see one called the Cy Young award. There must be a reason for that.

That reason is that he was such a great pitcher that they wanted to honor him so they created an award named after him.

When Young he didn't pitch a lot of shutouts he pitched a lot of good games though that were low scoring. Young had the first ever perfect game in the 'Live ball era" and he also had 2 career no-hitters. Most pitchers are looking for just one no-hitter but Young was so good, he got 2.

Cy Young had 15 seasons where he got 20 or more wins. That is great for a pitcher. A lot of pitchers want just one season of 20 or more wins, but he got 15 seasons of them!

Young-best pitcher

Ok,enough with the 511 wins thing, yes I understand it's remarkable, but please! We've all heard that stat so many times.

Johnson's 5 best WHIP's & ERA's
ERA:1.14/1.27/1.36/1.39/1.55
WHIP:0.780/0.908/0.933/0.954/0.969

Young's 5 best WHIP's & ERA's
ERA:1.26/1.62/1.82/1.93/1.97
WHIP:0.867/0.893/0.937/0.969/0.972

So those are 2 categories I say Johnson has great advantages on.

Cy Young struck out 200 men in a season twice. For good measure,Johnson struck out 300 men in a season twice.

In those 13 season form 1907-1919,Johnson won 20 games 10 time or 77% of the time.In Young's entire long career,he won 20 games 15 times,so that stat about nulifies itself.

Over Young's career he had a .62 win pct.Johnson, playing for miserable Senators teams, had a .64 winning pct,and that number would have been much better if he had played for a contender.

Another interesting stat I'd like to point out:Though the ball was livelier in Johnson's ERA(though not by much),Young had one season in which he did not allow a HR,in this period,Johnson had three in which he gave up none.

Johnson was noted for pitching as fast as any other in baseball history,it shows in his dominance.

Look at Young's stats. They are very consistent. Johnson has big jumps in the WHIP, but Young has one big jump in the ERA than that is it. I would rather have consistency than big jumps.

Cy Young was a big strikeout guy and he relied on his other players. He showed that you don't have to be a big strikeout guy to win games. Walter Johnson needed to strikeout people out to win them. They had to do two different things to win games.

Cy Young won 30+ games 5 times. He won 20-30 games 10 times. It is different for Johnson. Young won a lot of games in one season, and he was a great pitcher.

Johnson played in less games than Young so if they would've played int he same number of games, Johnson would've had a worse winning percentage.

Well, if you look at Youngs total number of wins, he has 511. It doesn't seem like he had a problem with giving up home runs. Even if he did give up a home run a season it isn't that big of a deal.

Cy Young has an AWARD named after him. Walter Johnson doesn't.

Cy Young was the better career pitcher, and the pitcher that is the best pitcher before 1919 is Cy Young.

Yes,Young won 30 games a few times, but don't forget,Young pitched a lot more often than Johnson,he would often pitch 50 games a season. In his time, pitchers were used until they were rung dry.Johnson did the same, but the think had changed somewhat by the time Johnson pitched.

Ok,here's my problem. No one besides Johnson rivaled Young in this time.No one.So I had to go with Johnson, and his stats cover 13 seasons, while Johnson had many stats that were better compared to Young.

Yes Dyhard,we understand Young had a trophy named after him.Your point is?The Hart trophy in Hockey is named after a player that wasn't the best player off all time.If it was named for the best, the NHL MVP would be called the Gretzky Trophy. In college basketball, the player of the year award was once named after Oscar Robertson, was he the best College B-Baller of all time?NO.The trophy could very well just have been called the Johnson award.

Where's your logic that if Johnson had played more games he would have had a worse win pct?Where's the logic?

And like I said,Johnson could have very easliy have won a few more games a year maybe even double digit more in several seasons.

Yes,Walter Johnson

Your arguments are very repetitive.

Yes,good td.

June 17, 2008  11:23 PM ET

The league didn't name the award after Cy Young because they thought he was the best pitcher ever. They named it after him because he was a dominant pitcher in both leagues. If you look at the careers of the other historically great pitchers at the time, you'll notice that that were only dominant with one league. Hence, the award was named the Cy Young instead of the Walter Johnson or Christy Matthewson award.

Yawn. although these are great arguement's
