CavaBearDians: What Happened? said 06/16, 03:05 AM
He's been with Boston all his career, and has been, without doubt, the face of the modern Celtics. He rarely made a peep and always stuck with his team, and worked with what he had through thick and thin. And he was duly rewarded.
The Celtics acquisition of Kevin Garnett is, in my opinion, more significant for Paul Pierce than for KG. Yes, both are on the verge of getting their first championship, and they both deserve it. But Kevin Garnett had plenty of opportunities in Minnesota to make some noise, but all we got was one-and-dones. Paul Pierce, on the other hand, maintained his status as an elite player in the NBA while on generally weak teams. But unlike the Kobe Bryants of the world, he kept a team attitude and hoped for the best.
And his time has come. With the Finals back in Boston, the Celtics are set to take the series after coming just short in Game 5 at the Staples Center. Paul Pierce will win a championship for the Celtics, and yes, it is Paul Pierce's, not Kevin Garnett's, rightful moment of glory. The performances Pierce is putting together on a nightly basis will forever be remembered in Boston lore.
His jersey will hang in the rafters as soon as he retires.
Cowboys-Celtics-Chisox said 06/16, 04:00 AM
Hmmm...You've been around long enough to know what an "easy win" is.
OF COURSE Pierces Jersey will hang in the rafters along side great Celtics past. Only a total and completely clueless idiot would argue otherwise...hence the "easy win" theory.
Instead I'll take issue with some of your claims. Paul was on generally "weak" teams while KG wasn't? You kidding me? And he "retained his status as an elite player in the NBA while on generally weak teams"? Come on. Pierce was NEVER EVER talked about when the conversation was BEST players in the game. Not on fan nation, not on the air, and not when it came time to pick the Olympic finalists this time around. He will be, now.
"His" time has come? KG gets no glory? How about Ray Allen? Rajon Rondo? Eddie House? Sam Cassell {cringe} ? James Posey? The entire bench. See, basketball is a TEAM sport. That's WHY the Celtics have the 3-2 lead with two home chances to clinch it. It's also WHY Paul FAILED in his first attempt to win the Eastern Conference Finals. Ditto, KG.
Basketball, more than any other sport, requires a TEAM effort to win it all. Ask MJ. The most celebrated player in history couldn't do jack until he had a TEAM around him.
CavaBearDians: What Happened? said 06/16, 01:25 PM
CCC, you're ridiculous. If you're saying I know how to go for an easy win, then you do to (or an easy loss, depending on how you look at it. You've been on this site long enough to know that agreeing with your opponents in Throwdowns shows a degree of pettyness and immaturity. Grow up. You sound like one of those obnoxious noobs who hijack every TD. And I do disagree with the notion that this is an easy topic.
Paul Pierce was an All Star six of his ten years. I think that's pretty elite, being among the thirty of so best players in the league (at least according to fans) for the majority of your career. Paul Pierce puts up good numbers in the regular season, but legacies are made in the playoffs.
With your last point you totally solidify my argument. MJ will always be discussed more than Pippen and Rodman, because he was the most important person on the team. It was KG who earned the unofficial MVP award for the Celtics, but it will be Paul Pierce who deserves the honor for the playoffs.
Outperforming LeBron James and Kobe Bryant in the playoffs is pretty much elite to me.
Paul Pierce is a Boston legend, Kevin Garnett is not.
CavaBearDians: What Happened? said 06/18, 01:12 AM
Real classy...I guess you can blame it on the atroo for bloc voting.
There really isn't anymore to argue, but I will solidify my argument by citing the fact that Paul Pierce won, as I predicted, the Finals MVP award. He didn't score the most points, nor did he rebound the best. But he played his heart out, providing stellar offense when needed as well as lockdown defense on perhaps the best player in the league. Paul Pierce deserved to have the highest honor, and he got it.
Paul Pierce will forever be a Celtics legend, and will indeed be the last to war number 34 in Boston.
Congratulations to the Paul Pierce and the Celtics.

Pierce is a very good player but I wouldn't classify him as elite. He's had a similar career to Mitch Richmond. Pierce is a good second tier star that put up solid numbers for (mostly) mediocre teams.

^ I agree with Angelos to a point. I definitely don't see Pierce as an elite player. That said, the Celtics retire an absurd amount of numbers.
They already have 21 retired numbers- for comparison's sake, the Yankees only have 16.
The fact is, the Celtics retire too many numbers. Given that, Pierce will almost certainly have his 34 hanging up there.

You know what I hate....... when players take a shot by the opposing bench and the bench players jump up, yell, and everything else. Stay off the court and don't act like kids- be professional

But anyway, I hate when this happens and it happens far too often. A person puts up a decent argument under a fair topic, and another person decides to take the argument...when they AGREE. Even if the topic is a little obvious, if someone disagreed and though they had a good argument let them throwdown, do not take the argument when you agree just to say that you think it is obvious. Let someone who actually wants to throwdown throwdown, instead of taking these arguments and doing absolutely nothing with them, and wasting them by whining about this so called "easy win". If it is such an easy win, no opne will take it, and the throwdown will expire, but if someone wants to take it, let them. This is a watse of a throwdown, Cowboys-Celtics-Chisox.

Having watched Paul Pierce for the entirety of my short life, I have seen that he is an elite scorer in this league. He gets to the free throw line at will and you can't back off him or hill nail a jumper over you. He is as dangerous as any other player in the league.
Also worth mentioning is his spectacular defense. He proved in the playoffs, when guarding Joe Johnson, Lebron James and Kobe Bryant, that he is one of the best defenders in the league. He will go on to have his number retired, and should go down as one of the best Celtcs in history.

CCC, I dont get your argument...you're not arguing whether or not the jersey will be retired but a common phrase used by everyone (especially media)? Ex: Kobe's title

I get the argument. I've taken these before and lost. Its got obvious written all over it. To argue it seriously though - I would have simply pointed out that he has done nothing for the Celtics until KG arrived to bring him to the promise land.

I'm with Ghost. I don't get it either, CCC. By the way, your saying that Cava is going for an easy win proves that you're going for an easy win as well. In my opinion, this topic is debatable. Some, like TradeAngelos, do NOT believe Pierce is that elite of a player to have his jersey retired.
Nonetheless, I'll hold off on voting and see how this unfolds. CCC could still win me over with his remaining arguments.

I will argue semantics here. Nobody has their jersey retires they moment they themselves retire. The Yankees have the same # retired twice (#8 for Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra) because Yogi was actively wearing #8 when Dickey's was retired. The same thing could happen in Boston- someone could wear #34 before Pierce's jersey is retired. Thus it is possible for someone else to wear #34 after Pierce retires, though possibly unlikely.
As for the whole Pierce did nothing without KG, he led the Celtics to the East Finals in 2002 with Antoine Walker as his sidekick. He's not a top 10 player, but he's certianly top 20. And I do believe that will be good enough to win the title. I'd take that any day.

Where the heck did you hear that? I love Pierce, but he isn't that good. One of the best CELTICS of all time, but no players.

Yeah, Armchair, where on Earth did you hear that?
Favre Fan, that's a good point. Maybe a better title for this throwdown would have been "Paul Pierce's jersey #34 will be retired and hung in the rafters."

Vote left. Challenger didn't even make an attempt to counterpoint the main issue and instead used the soapbox to throw a tantrum about fishing for easy TD wins.

It was the general consensus of the 30-ish Celtics fans who were at the bar I was at last night...I just shook my head the whole time and it seemed to make them more steel-like in their resolve.
