Entire career counts major league service only (not minors)

I changed the 3 OF to 1 for each position to make it more interesting.

C - Johnny Bench - probably the best overall C ever
1B - Lou Gehrig - could have been one of the best overall players ever
2B - Bobby Doerr - not to many options here
SS - Cal Ripken - this was tough, but can't argue his hitting and the streak
3B - George Brett - another close one, but his batting takes the cake
LF - Ted Williams - one of the best hitters ever
CF - Joe Dimaggio - one of the best
RF - Roberto Clemente - another tough position but a great overall player
Bench - Mickey Mantle - injuries cut his career short
SP - Walter Johnson - in my opinion the best pitcher ever

Great minds think alike! I do have a few wrinkles that will give us PLENTY to discuss!

C - Johnny Bench (childhood hero!)
1B - Lou Gehrig
2B - Jackie Robinson
SS - Barry Larkin
3B - Mike Schmidt
LF - Ted Williams
CF - Joe Dimaggio
RF - Roberto Clemente

Bench - Tony Gwynn

SP - Bob Gibson ( This one is for you Uncle Ed! RIP)

Okay, so the differences are 2b, SS, 3B, Bench and SP.

2B - Doerr versus Robinson: Off the field and for what Robinson did for the game he wins hands down, however that's not for this TD :
14 seasons for Doerr, 10 for Jackie: due to the seasons played difference, lets look at the 162 game averages:
Doerr: 616 ABs, 95 R, 177 Hits, 19 HRs, 108 RBIs, .288 BA, .362 OBP and .461 Slugging
Jackie: 572 ABs, 111 R, 178 Hits, 16 HRs, 86 RBIs, .311 BA, .409 OBP and .474 Slugging

SS - 21 seasons for Cal, 19 for Barry. 2 MVPs for Cal, 1 for Barry.
162 game averages:
Cal: 624 ABs, 89 Rs, 172 Hits, 23 HRs, 91 RBIS, .276 BA, .340 OBP, and .447 Slugging
Barry: 590 ABs, 99 Rs, 174 Hits, 15 HRs, 71 RBIs, .295 BA, .371 OBP, .444 Slugging
Once again close, but in this case I think Cal and his consecutive games gets the edge here.

3B - this is close as well, Brett had the average, Schmidt the power...I say push.

Bench - Mantle over Gwynn...Gwynn may have had the better average put Mickey has him in almost all other categories.....edge goes to Mickey here.

So it is a wash at 2B and 3B, I have a slight edge at Bench and SS....SP in 3rd

NOT SO FAST my grotesque and cloaked evil emperorship!

You're throwing around prejudgement like a baptist minister at a meeting of the Rainbow coalition!

You would be happy to judge our teams position by position but I submit my team as a whole.

My team is superior defensively with Schmidt and his 10 Gold Gloves at 3rd and Larkin with his 3-2 Gold Glove advantage at short plus his superior range.

Second, you don't have a top of the order. Your team has bombers up and down the line-up but no speed at the top. I have Larkin and Robinson at the top of my order. Both Larkin and Robinson have superior OBP, which is a better measuring stick than BA.
As Mr. Miagi would say, you must have balance Daniel-san.

The reason I chose Gwynn for my bench is for that same reason. With Dimaggio, Schmidt, Williams and Gehrig, I have plenty of power and felt like one of the best base hitters in the game would be a nice fit. His demeanor would allow him to be a bench player, I doubt The Mick, takes that role "sitting down" LOL

I think I CLEARLY have the edge at 3rd with arguable the best 3rd baseman to ever play the game. I like Robinson as a better overall player than Doerr.

You bring up good points about the balance of the lineup and defense. I have probably 2 of the smoothest outfielders even in Dimaggio and Clemente and probably the strongest arm from RF in Clemente.

With guys like Williams, Gehrig, Dimaggio batting 2 - 4 with Bench and Ripken batting 5 and 6th I wouldn't have to worry about speed. I would also have Brett and his super high BA probably leading off just to get on base ahead of Williams, Gehrig and Dimaggio.

As for my bench player of Mantle....I would rather have a switchhitting power guy to platoon or late-innning situations - he would be able to bat with the odds in his favor against any pitcher the opposing team would bring in.

As for Larkin - I don't even think he is the 2nd best SS to play for one team behind Ripken, I think that would go to Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks....

Quick mention about the pitchers - Walter Johnson was "the Bob Gibson" of his time....all Bob did was what Walter was doing years before....they were both dominant, fastball pitchers.
I hope the voters aren't voting just because of what Jackie did off the field, his on the field numbers ONLY are what should be considered here, it is very close to mine.

Ernie Banks was a great hitter but limited at short, prompting his move to 1st base, in fact playing longer there than short.

You can't build a team based soley on power. On the days that your bats aren't there, a team must have some other way to score runs. A team with Brett at the top of the order will NOT manufacture many runs with stolen bases or going first to third on a single. Robinson and Larkin give my team that versatility at the top of the order.
I will take Larkin's speed and range over Ripken's streak.

Player for player, of course you take Mantle. I took Gwynn for what he brings to the table. As I pointed out, we already have power all over the place.

"Walter Johnson was "the Bob Gibson" of his time" You are correct and I choose the modern version complete with the modern pitches that will be necessary to get some of your modern hitters out. Today's stars will crush the best fastball if they know it is coming. I will also take Bob Gibson's fear factor when considering keeping your power hitters from getting comfortable in the box.

IF the questions are 2B,SS,3B and bench. I take 3rd and 2nd. SS is a wash, and you get Mantle.

The score 2-1-1, Coach!

Good luck Coach.

June 16, 2008  12:01 PM ET

Voters - keep in mind this is for a tourney so there is no "going for the easy win"...someone had to start the TD

June 16, 2008  12:02 PM ET

good call with Ripken. If you could have a rotation, Jim Palmer.

June 16, 2008  12:03 PM ET

Eww. Cal Ripken.

June 16, 2008  12:05 PM ET

Commentors - let's not make any suggestions on other players until my opponent has a chance to do so himself.

June 16, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Awww man, I wanted to suggest Mike Greenwell. Guess I can't now.

June 16, 2008  12:09 PM ET

No you can suggest Greenwell all you want....

June 16, 2008  12:19 PM ET

June 16, 2008  12:37 PM ET

Larkin! Nice one.

These are great lists.

June 16, 2008  12:39 PM ET

Bill Mazeroski at second.

Pie Traynor at 3rd.

June 16, 2008  12:44 PM ET

This is why I'll never be an elite TDer.

June 16, 2008  01:09 PM ET

In the end..for me..this will come down to the arguments with Mickey vs. Gwynn. Should be interesting.

June 16, 2008  01:15 PM ET

Willie McCovey, or did he play for a different team for like 4 years.

June 16, 2008  01:16 PM ET

Derek Jeter

June 16, 2008  01:27 PM ET

Woah guys, while I'm leaning right lets wait to see what Stowe has to say. This is a huge tourney and I don't think its fair Stowe to get go down without hearing all of his arguments.

June 16, 2008  01:28 PM ET

Wow....down 4-1 and we haven't even discussed SPs yet or not even a full 2 set of arguments yet.
