NMI Tourney IV Round 3: Most important distraction facing the NY Giants?

My choice for the most important distraction facing the NY Giants, Jeremy Shockey.

Now I do understand there is a current contract issue involving Plaxico Burress, but we all know that will be resolve before the season starts. These types of things happen every year with every star player. The NFL is a business and as Burress states, he isnt practicing for "Business reasons". The hold out will end with Burress, but the Shockey drama will linger on until he is gone. The relationship between Jeremy & the front office cannot be resolved.

Shockey's situation goes beyond "business" & is more personal. Even as recent as this past Friday, it was reported that he was involve in a heated shouting match with GM Jerry Reese. For those who haven't heard, Shockey is accusing the Giants of spreading rumors about him through the media regarding his desire to be traded, which he says were false.

Though the drama with Shockey never seems to end, IMO, the final straw came during Superbowl Sunday. Wanting to support his teammates on the sidelines, the Giants refused to let him & forced him to watch from the box. That was the beginning of this bitter fued between player vs Front office.

Ah..Shockey. Always a distraction. But I don't think he's the Giants' most important problem.

Although Shockey is a proven producer, the Giants know that they can win without him. They proved it last year after week 15.

Even prior to his departure, Shockey was doing very little to help the team. From December on, Shockey had a total of 5 receptions, and did virtually nothing to contribute to a 7-2 record, monstrous playoff run, and stunning Superbowl victory.

The G-Men can succeed without the services of their loudmouth tight end. In the back of their collective mind, the Giants must know that regardless of how the situation plays out, the team will be ok.

Two key contributors are demanding renegotiations on their contracts- Osi Umeniyora and Plaxico Burress. Having to pick one of these, I'm going with Burress being the bigger issue.

You say that "we all know that will be resolve before the season starts", but don't forget that Plax also has a history of disgruntled and selfish behavior. He has already indicated he'll sit out until he gets his way. And these problems CAN linger.

Look at their roster. WR could be a real problem.

More in #2.

Lets all put aside our hatred for Shockey a minute. The topic is who is the biggest distraction to the Giants right now, not who is the most liked or who would be missed the most.

There has always been contract disputes in the NFL, so whats going on with Plax is quite common. But when a certain player starts attacking the front office, especaily through the media, the distractions are esculated. As I commented above, Plaxico problems will be resolved. Shockeys wont. Too many things have been said between the two parties & too many bad blood.

I dont know why Shockeys statistics have anything do with this TD, but ill play along. Can the Gmen succeed without Shockey? Thats possible, but not likely. True they did succeed during the playoff without Shockey, but that doesnt mean the outcome wouldnt have been the same with him. Explain to me where they are going to replace 60 receptions & 600-700 yards? Kevin Boss? Darcy Johnson? Dont bet on it.

Again contracts disputes is a common practice in the NFL. Its a business. Whats going on between Shockey & the front office goes beyond that. Its no longer business, its personal. When it gets to that point, it becomes more distracting.

Shockey has been a distraction from DAY ONE. Nothing has changed. The Giants have proven their ability to deal with his nonsense.

And his stats DO matter, because the Giants have also proven that they can succeed without him and his production. If Shockey WERE to move on, there's every reason to believe that the team would be fine.

On the other hand, a reliable WR is somewhat more critical to the Giants' success, and look beyond Plax:

-Manningham has shown little in camp, and even if he improves he's still a rookie.
-Tyree may start the season on PUP list following knee surgery
-Toomer will be 34 years old
-Steve Smith is emerging, but unproven

Despite his success in the playoffs, Eli Manning is still a young guy, and is NOT the type of QB who's going to win it on his own. He needs solid targets at the WR position.

With Rosenhaus in the mix, this COULD be a typical contract dispute, or it could linger well into the regular season, affecting Plax's production and the team's chemistry. THAT is something that NY cannot afford.

Plax's "holdout" has already drawn criticism from Sean O'Hara and other players. His selfishness is bigger threat at this point.

Forfeited Turn

Hey, I hope everything's ok- I don't know if I've ever seen you miss a turn.

Since you didn't get a 3rd, I'll just use this to sum up rather than argue more.

-Shockey is a distraction, but he's always been a problem
-The Giants have proven that they can succeed with or without him
-Plax is more critical to the team than Shockey, particularly with regard to Eli
-Plax has a track record of the type of behavior that could allow this to carry over into the season
-His actions are already causing problems among other team members and affecting chemistry

Bottom line: They won a Superbowl without Shockey. Whatever happens with him, they'll be ok.

Shockey is far less important to that team than Burress is, and Burress already has a frayed relationship with the front office.

Kevin Boss played better than Shockey did... Burress has no replacement yet. Giants fans should worry about him far more.

I think the Media nd the hype, plus trying to not live up to the SB hangover

"Two key contributors are demanding renegotiations on their contracts- Osi Umeniyora and Plaxico Burress. Having to pick one of these, I'm going with Burress being the bigger issue. "

Technically, Osi hasnt made any contract demands. He did speak shortly about seeking a new contract soon, but he went on to say he's happy and will wait to be taken care of at the appropriate time.

Right, he's behaving. Which is why Burress gets the nod as the problem child. I think Osi will be taken care of without too much noise.

Feel her breath on my face
Her body close to me
Can't look in her eyes
She's out of my league
Just a fool to believe
I have anything she needs
She's like the wind

SWAYZE4EVER YO!

So far I vote (but I no vote yet...but if I did...right now...)---->

Buress is the least "easily replaced" of the Giants mentioned...

June 16, 2008  03:56 PM ET

Leaning left but I will hold off from voting. I'm not so sure that receiver is that big a problem even without Burress. Steve Smith was stepping up towards the end of the season, and even though Sinorice Moss is a bit injury prone he could break through this season.

June 16, 2008  05:18 PM ET

i hope people arent voting because of their hatred for Shockey. I think thats whats going on here lol. Its not who is the most important, its who is the most distracting.

June 17, 2008  09:16 PM ET

I liked this part:

"Whats going on between Shockey & the front office goes beyond that. Its no longer business, its personal. When it gets to that point, it becomes more distracting."

Thats basically what I wanted to see here. Yes, Shockey has always been a distraction. But never has it reached levels like these. I cant really say how long or how loud Burress will hold out. Tough vote, but that quote helped me along.

June 17, 2008  10:10 PM ET

That forfeited turn helped Porkins get my vote. Vote to him.

June 17, 2008  10:42 PM ET

I usually dont vote for a forfeit turn side either, but I've never seen him forfeit a turn, as Porkins pointed out, so I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

June 18, 2008  07:08 AM ET

shockey is a distraction but they have proven they can win with him being a distraction....burress on the other hand would be a huge loss and is a huge distraction.

Forfeiting a turn in a tourney? Tsk, tsk.
