5 seconds left in the fourth, down by six, one the 3 yard line, no time-outs left, what do you do? Run or pass?
Random Caribou said 06/17, 05:40 PM
I would pass, do a fake to the running back then a shuffle pass to the tight end who is is the endzone. If it works, you win the game, but if it doesn't then you would probably have just enough time try one last play. Its a win-win situation. But if you run, you risk not getting it and running down the clock. The defense will be expecting a bull rush run so they will have all their guys on the line of scrimmage attacking the rb while the te is in the back of the endzone doing a little dance. If you run, their whole team will be on top of the rb in three seconds, and unless we can resurect Jerome, no one can stand that, and there will be no time left for enother play. Disagree? Lets throwdown!

Why would the defense be thinking run? I say they will be thinking pass becasue they think YOUR thinking they are thinking run...lol
Obviously, if you pass you MAY have a chance at another play???but that isn???t guaranteed. Blocking could break down, coverage could be really good in such a small area, and the QB could waste 4 seconds scrambling looking for someone open, and to quote a famous man???only 3 things happen when you pass and two of them are bad.
There are so many factors you have left unanswered (type of team, weather conditions, etc.), which is cool, but I say run it???shove it down their throat and you the better team will win (or tie) it on one play. I hate to sound like Parcells (cause I hate that guy) but you should trust your OL that close and ram it in???.and by the way I will finish tomorrow.

The defense always assumes you're going to run the ball in a situation like this, that's why my plan is good: The element of surprise.
They expect you to run the ball, so no one will give a $h!t where the TE or WR ar. Just put them on the line and pretend they will block for you, and while the defense is scrambling to tackle the RB just throw to the TE/WR. Heck, make the RB a third option, and make another TE wait before going out so no one will be on him. Thats five throwing options for the one or two defenders staying back to handle. One must be open.
In your third paragraph you say that one must trust his/her offensive line that close, so therefore your points in the second paragraph are moot. According to your theory, the blocking will not break down and the QB wont waste any time shoveling to one of four or five guys. You are perfectly right: In a situation like this, one must rely on his/hers OL to seal the deal.
You are right that in a normal situation two of the fthree things during a pass are bad, but here only one of the things are the end of the world. If it is intercepted, then the game is over, but in that is unlikely if you shovel it inside or pass outside
more...

According to you, the defense "always" assumes you are going to run...are you really that naive? If that was the case then every offense would pass in that situation because, hey, the defense ALWAYS assume a run...not a real fluid argument there buddy.
What it seems like to me is that you are overthinking things,,,talking about if you send this guy left and that guy right, then there is no way the defense can cover everyone...Im sorry but you just stole 1 minute of life from me that I will never ever be able to get back after reading that crap...
The very fact that the ball is on the 3 yard line makes the coverage area small for the defense...thereby allowing them to cover better...does it always happen like that, no, but it doesn't mean that the defense always assumes a run either.
If a team is forced to throw the ball to score, on the 3 yard line, I think in most peoples mind, they would say that is a flawed team...
RUN RUN RUN!
Random Caribou said 06/18, 11:03 AM
It would be extremely difficult for the two defenders in the back to cover absolutely everyone. And if it is an incomplete, one still has another play to go at it.
You laugh at my arguments and yet do not came out with any of your own. The only thing that i gathered from your last argument is that you are not a very happy person. It is true that normaly the offense will run and the defense will try to stop the run. That is usually what happens down there. But once in a while a team will throw it, and usually it works. I never said to send one guy that way and another that way, but that would be a good plan. It would confuse the guys in the back, and one simple pump fake will send them every which way and all one must do is do a simple shovel pass. If the team is forced to have to do a last-ditch effort in the dying seconds, then they are flawed anyway, and why is having creativity bad? Unless they have a moving mountain for a rb the chances are not all that good of getting it across the goalline.
All your last argument did is try to insult me in a few various ways, but at least I have an argument, and none of your petty insults and name-calling will change that, 'buddy'.

I fell like I talking to Mike Martz...
Running the ball doesnt always mean up the middle...it all depends on your team. You could have a "bettering ram" runner which would more than likly go up the middle. You have a "speed guy" who could run the sweep, you could even have a Vince Young type QB who could run the ball himself. All of which in my opinion are better than passing on the 3 yard line. Putting the ball in the air, that close to the goal could work well, but IF I HAD ONLY ONE CHANCE IM RUNNING IT.
Even if the runner gets tackled at the goaline, all he has to do is extend his arms to break the plain of the goal line to score, another favorable factor for running the ball. Trust your lineman and play like you got a pair...

I trust the guys up front and I run the football.....If I dont get in, I call a Time out. Even though Im out of Time Outs, its just a 15 yard penalty, so worst case situation I have 2 shots at the endzone

RUN. You RUN the ball.
But, Goodell, don't they run off 10secs if the offense commits a penalty in the closing minute?

Yeah, but would you rather be passing from 3 yards away or 18 yards away?

See you didn't specify what down it is. Fourth down you run that ****. Any other down and you play action bootleg which means if you're Steve Young you're running it anyway.

Be really, I would do play action and then look for either a crossing WR ot a TE in the flats, with the RB as a checkdown option.
