Smith had good numbers, but when compared to Walter Payton he is next to nothing. It took him THREE extra years to top the all time rushing record established by Sweetness. When it came to Payton's teams, he was really the only weapon until the late eighties and the end of his career. Smith had Hall of Famers Aikman and Irvin; Payton had McMahon and Gault. Not even close when comparing the talent around them. But Payton reached the plateau of running greatness in only 13 NFL seasons. He had 16,726 rushing yards and 110 receiving yards. The man was known for his high stepping, stiff legged running style which helped avoid injury and made defenders unable to tell how fast he was moving. He snagged nearly 500 balls for just over 4,500 yards and 15 TDs. He even threw a 60 yard TD pass against the Minnesota Vikings as well as a passing TD to Jim McMahon in another game. He was known for his contributions to the community hence the naming of the Man of the Year award after him. In the NFL greatness is determined not only by numbers and championships, but by his supporting of the community. Walter "Sweetness" Payton is the greating running back of all time; no one can top him.

UNTRUE: Emmitt Smith needed "THREE extra years" to break Payton's record.
FACT: Smith broke his record in his 14th season, and only had 90 carries that year with Arizona. Payton played for 13 seasons.

But you bring up an interesting point. Shouldn't the fact he played longer at an elite level be an advantage for Smith? Despite your theory of how Payton avoided injury, the fact is Smith was the more durable of any of the elite RBs in history -he only missed 14 games in his 15 seasons. Smith is the best playoff RB ever, and still retired a season stronger than any Hall of Fame back in their primes. Payton was a fine human being, and the Bears, a likeable team. Emmitt was a part of the Bad Boy Cowboys. Are you sure your Fandom of the Redskins doesn't skewer your opinion?

Let's not fail to see the forest through the trees. Everyone accepts Emmitt as PART of the reason why Dallas was good, but never THE reason. All this says is any RB with a modicum of talent could have won there. He was the soul of a dynasty. Without his legendary consistency, the Cowboys do not win three rings. He comes before Aikman and Irvin.

To suggest otherwise puts the cart in front of the Workhorse

Exactly, Payton played for thirteen season; if Smith was the best then why continue to play on a mediocre team? Even having broken the record by his 14th season, it means not, but that he wasn't as good as Payton. Payton was the offense in Chicago for his entire career. The Cowboys, he was a piece to Aikman, Irvin, and Smith. I don't see how him playing for an extra three years without even breaking 1,000 yards with a 3.3 YPC average makes him elite. He had 10 1,000 yard seasons in 13 years compared to Smith???s 11 1,000 yard seasons in 15 seasons. Sweetness tops Smith in every category no matter what stats say. He was more dominant during his tenure in Chicago than Smith was in Dallas. Payton held the single game rushing record of 275 against the Vikings in 1977 during the infamous Purple People Eaters defense of the Vikings. The record was broken by Jamal Lewis against the Cleveland Browns. I???d have to say the Payton still owns that record because he actually played against a team. Allow me to correct a mistake I made in my first argument: Payton passed Brown in his ninth season in the sixth week of the season. He finished the day with 12, 400 yards. Payton is the greatest all time

"...if Smith was the best then why continue to play on a mediocre team?"

I dunno, the fact they were paying him close to $6 million to do it? Who are you to tell him his legacy is less? He rushed for 937 yards his final year. Not exactly LenDale White.

I'm also curious how Payton was "more dominant" than Smith was during their respective primes. Smith led the league in rushing four times. Payton once. At some point you have to give credit to the guy who actually got the job done. Payton disappeared in the playoffs.

Two Pro-Emmitt areas, winning and durability. We know he has Payton in yards, touchdowns, carries...No one else holds his jock in wins and toughness. Yet, Smith seems to be ignored, not praised, mostly by fans of his opponents, like yourself.

There's a difference between running and being an RB. Emmitt represents the latter. He ran within himself, he had unreal vision and had a deathly even patience that no other back ever born can boast. His teams won because he was going to crack off 4.2 yards a carry, and he was going to do it every carry for 19 games a season.

Did Payton take his team that deep into the playoffs that many times?

You want to say that Payton wasn't durable? He missed one game his rookie season and then played in 186 consecutive games after that. THAT is durability. LenDale White has nothing to do with Smith to even compare the two shows how much of 'greatnes' Smith DOESN'T have. No one would compare Payton to anyone but Sanders, Brown, and the like. Payton had much more durability than Smith did and his team didn't win quite as conistently because of the surrounding talent. It was pretty much him and his offensive line whereas Smith had Irvin and Aikman to pull the defense away from concentrating on him. Payton didn???t have that kind of support until the last few years of his career and people STILL knew the Bears were going to pretty much run it down their throats the whole game. I don???t ignore Smith, he is a great, but definitely NOT the greatest that title belongs to the one and only Sweetness. You want to talk vision and durability. Payton never shied away from contact, he looked for it and relished destroying defenders, yet still never missed a game. He could leap gargantuan lineman in a single bound it seemed. Once again, Walter ???Sweetness??? Payton is the greatest back of all time.

Ummm...not sure where you are getting your information, but Payton only played 190 games in his career, so he did not play 186 straight. Not even close, in fact. Payton missed MORE games (18) in less seasons than Smith did (14), and Smith played in far more post-season contests. If you want to make up statistics, then ok, but in reality, if you add in the playoffs, Smith destroys Payton statistically. You have yet to name area that contradicts this, and I find that terribly convenient. You can???t back up anything you wrote. All we got from you were tales of him jumping over lineman and fictional stats about not missing a game for 12 consecutive seasons. Emmitt didn???t leap over anyone. He just got tackled after a five-plus-yard gain, or spiked the ball after one of the 164 touchdowns he scored. NFL record, by the way...how many did Payton have?

Emmitt is a proven winner and leader. His statistics are matched by no other RB in history, and was the best player on one of the best teams in history.

DAMN THIS IS THE THROWDOWN WARRIORS THROWDOWN TOURNAMENT ROUND 2!!!

READ THE ARGUMENT AND MAKE A VOTE!

June 24, 2007  02:40 PM ET

That should say 110 rushing TDs not receiving yards, he had 4,538 receiving yards.

June 24, 2007  02:40 PM ET

love emmit (former florida gator) but I have to agree with W. Payton as the best of the backs

June 24, 2007  02:42 PM ET

There are too many other RB's at least as good to call Emmitt the greatest...he was great, but not the greatest of all time.

June 24, 2007  02:44 PM ET

Jim Brown was definitely up there, but you HAVE to give it to Walter on account of he beat Brown's rushing record by like his tenth year in the league, so he atleast played just as long as Brown (one year more) compared to Smith playing an extra THREE years to beat Payton...he should have retired and left it standing...

June 24, 2007  02:52 PM ET

this is too easy of a topic. How can anyone defend him being the best? He had the most talented o-line in the history of the NFL in the early and mid 90s. He was terrible at the end of his career just so he could get the yards record.

June 24, 2007  02:52 PM ET

Hey, it is for the throwdown tournament...I didn't pick it...

June 24, 2007  03:20 PM ET

I need to wait for an argument from Steelercooz but I find it hard to believe he will top the one that Big Ben68 just gave.

June 24, 2007  03:23 PM ET

Id take Barry over Emmit anyday!!!

June 24, 2007  03:27 PM ET

Who wouldn't? I'd take just about anybody over Emmitt Smith (I am a Redskins fan though). I gave coniseration to Barry as the greatest, but he is the second greatest, but could have been the greatest had he played maybe two more years...we will never know...

June 24, 2007  03:34 PM ET

but there is nothing to read to vote so its kinda hard to "read, think, vote" yah like that motto

June 24, 2007  03:36 PM ET

You can read mine...isn't that enough?

June 24, 2007  03:54 PM ET

It's interesting that you point out that you would take anybody over Emmitt, though, because you're a Redskins fan.

June 24, 2007  03:59 PM ET

Ah, but that still doesn't cloud my vision. If I had to choose, I would take just about anybody else, but if he was given to me as a player in his prime, I wouldn't complain.

June 24, 2007  04:03 PM ET

"Who wouldn't? I'd take just about anybody over Emmitt Smith (I am a Redskins fan though)."

You're saying, again, this doesn't cloud your vision?

June 24, 2007  04:04 PM ET

Thank you, Shiz, if being down 12-1 before I even made an argument doesn't prove your way of voting isn't being done, I don't know what does. And my one vote wasn't from me.

June 24, 2007  04:18 PM ET

Um, Steelercooz, did you read my comment just before your two? Obviously not...

June 24, 2007  04:19 PM ET

Wow I cant believe this was given out in the tournament. Another round and more lopsided topic, with a title that will draw more votes than the argument....

June 24, 2007  04:22 PM ET

LOL, I said something of the same thing to Byd Racer...if he needs help with topics I can help him...

June 24, 2007  04:26 PM ET

Yeah, I did. That's why I responded. You admitted flatly you don't like Emmitt Smith because he's a Cowboy and your a Redskins fan. But whatever.

Actually, Corey Dillon broke Payton's record before Lewis did, but you already knew that...
