Is Becky Hammon a traitor for playing with the Russians in this summer's Olympics?

I say no.

Here is the story:

http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977374459

Becky Hammon wasn't invited to play for the U.S. when they chose the initial 20 players to try out for the team. She has an Olympic dream & given her dual citizenship, exercised her right 2 play for the Russians. Only when this came 2 light did the U.S. team back pedal & expand the field to 30. Becky felt slighted that she wasnt considered as one of the top 20 best prospects and had already made her decision to play for the Russians, so as the story says, it was too little too late for her.

She did what she wanted to do and what she thought was her best and most likely only opportunity to be a starting point guard in the Olympics.

Its easy for the U.S. coach to label her a traitor after the fact, but the bottom line is she would be playing for the U.S. had they not slighted her when choosing what was their supposed 20 best-player-field.

She acknowledges it wont be easy for people to understand and she isnt asking anyone to jump on her bandwagon for making this choice.

She plays basketball in both the US and Russia professionally. Not a reason to label her unpatriotic.

OK all valid points but, she is not RUSSIAN!!!!!!!
SHE HAS NO RUSSIAN BLOOD!!!!!
SHE CANT SPEAK A WORD OF RUSSIAN!!!!

just because she lives in Russia during the WNBA offseason to play in a Russian league doesn't make her Russian.
SHE IS PLAYING IN RUSSIA BECAUSE THEY ARE PAYING HER TO!!!
AND SHE IS GETTING INCENTIVES DEPENDING HOW FAR THE TEAM GOES.

YOU SAY THAT: SHE DID WHAT SHE WANTED TO DO
WHAT SHE WANTED TO DO WAS MAKE MONEY
SHE WAS STILL PUT ON THE LIST THAT WAS EXPANDED

SHE ONLY WENT TO RUSSIA FOR THE MONEY

She knows she isnt Russian. We know she isnt Russian. Her not being Russian is not in violation of any Olympic rule nor is her playing there sacrificing her patriotic duty.

The U.S. team made a mistake. They should have invited Becky to try out for the team & once they realized their mistake, they tried to expand the field of candidates from 20 to 30, even though they have had the last 4 freakin yrs to figure out who the best players are and how big a field would be necessary for all possible candidates to compete.

Becky isnt snubbing the U.S. to play for a foreign team. The U.S. snubbed her and since she has dual citizenship in Russia she made a decision to play there so she could realize her Olympic dream. Sure she would probably have liked to do it in a U.S. uniform, but that wasnt meant to be until AFTER the U.S. hadnt invited her to the initial tryouts. D'oh! Blame the U.S. coaches if you want to blame anyone for this.

She is getting paid professionally as a Russian basketball player in the WNBA offseason. So what? If the NBA had as short a season as the WNBA and got paid as little as the women do they would be playing overseas too.

Went to Russia to play. Period.

Yes, everyone knows the USA team made a mistake
You say that the US team TRIED to expand the field to 20-30 they did!!!!!
She was still so furious that she decided to leave and play for Russia where she would get PAYED!!!!!!

SHE WAS STILL GIVEN A SECOND CHANCE!!!!!!
AND STILL DECIDED TO LEAVE!!!!!!!!

She had already committed to the Russian team BEFORE the United States expaned the tryouts from 20 to 30. To give the Russians the finger after having initially been snubbed by the Americans would have made Becky look like a wishy-washy idiot.

Why should Becky need a second chance to even tryout for the United States? She is one of the faces of the WNBA, one of the best female basketball athletes to play for her country.

Why dont you at least acknowledge the United States screwed up after having four years to figure out they needed Becky on their team, but had such an arrogant small field of tryouts at only 20 people?

You are fairly new so I want to give you one last piece of advice. Never type in all capital letters. It makes you look like you are screamingly desperate.

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE:

she's only a russian citizen because she's playing in a russian league

good throwdown cassidy

i got nothing else to say

its only a traitor if you were part of what you are traiting on, the us didnt want her, so how can she trait?

June 18, 2008  09:43 AM ET

they put her on the second list so its still TRAITING

June 18, 2008  09:45 AM ET

and I would go as far as to say the US snubbed her

June 18, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Dual-citizenship in the US & Russia

Gainfully employed in Russia

Russia made her a citizen

She didn't make the US team

Plenty of non-US born citizens have played on our Olympic teams instead of their native country's, so why can't she just do the same that we do for dual-citizens who decide to play for the US too?

Not a traitor and if you think this is a big deal, your priorities are messed up considering the politics & steroid abuses related to the Olympic Games. Vote to Cass

SHE ONLY WENT TO RUSSIA FOR THE MONEY

So shouldn't you also complain about Dirk Nowitski, Steve Nash, Manu Ginobli, and Tony Parker (as examples) only being in the US for the money instead of playing for the basketball leagues within their native countries?

June 18, 2008  09:53 AM ET

it's the olympics you are supposed to play for your country.
Dirk Nowitski, Steve Nash, Manu Ginobli, and Tony Parker are playing for a profession in the US and during the olympics they play for their home country.
Becky has no relation to RUSSIA

June 18, 2008  09:55 AM ET

Why? Many athletes have played for countries not their own because their grandfather or great grandfather or etc was from that country.

The Olympics isn't about competition between nations, its between athletes...she wants to compete and can't for the US, but she is a citizen of another country.

June 18, 2008  09:57 AM ET

EXactly, you said that athletes compete because of grandparents.

SHE HAS NO RELATION AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

June 18, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Other countries have different specifications for foreign athletes to compete on their team...they may not have a blood regulation, but obviously citizenship is enough. Who are you to specify what a nation's rules are for determining who can play for them?

SHE HAS NO RELATION AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bosoxfan33 | 06/18/08, 09:57 AM

I can point to SEVERAL athletes on the US Olympic soccer team (in the last few Olympics) who had NO BLOOD relation to the US (only citizenship) that competed for the US

June 18, 2008  10:00 AM ET

Did you watch the "OUTSIDE THE LINES" report

June 18, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Nope and don't care.

Benedict Arnold, the Rosenbergs, & John Walker Lindh are traitors. People who sell secrets to foreign nations are traitors. To equate playing for another country as being a traitor emphasizes ones' short minded, ignorant views.

Don't dilute the seriousness & disgust of being a traitor through high treason by equating it to sports. Sports is both a business & a celebration of competition between athletes, not nations.

Becky Hammon is hot, she can play for whoever she wants

June 18, 2008  11:07 AM ET

If she's qualified to play for them, all power to her. Same thing with Mike Piazza playing for Italy in the World Baseball Championships. Who cares? He's not in any way shape or form "Italian", other than having ancestors from Italy. But they let him play for them, and the USA didn't. Same with Becky. Hope she puts up 30 on the USA and shows them how wrong it was to not put her on the team.

June 18, 2008  11:37 AM ET

There are a lot of athletes who have dual citizenship and have no US blood (Kenyan Runners), and play for the country that will be beneficial ($$$) in the end. Hammon should be allowed to do the same

June 18, 2008  01:12 PM ET

No, Becky is not a traitor for playing on the Russian team because of her dual citizenship and anyone who says she is, is a maroon.

June 18, 2008  01:12 PM ET

i agree with Cassy on this. She is not a traitor. The U.S. team would not let her try out only until she had singed to play with the Russians. The US team is at fault here, not Becky Hammon.

June 18, 2008  01:22 PM ET

If somebody is a maroon are they lost?

June 18, 2008  01:38 PM ET

I dont like them either Savage, but some people think if they internet yell, people will understand how passionate they are. Or so goes the rumor.
