Four out of the five teams in this Division could all find a home in this TD but I'll have to pick the Colorado Rockies.

Colorado only had one starting pitcher that was over 29 out of the seven pitchers who were projected to start in the rotation at the beginning of the season or were projected to come into the rotation some time during the season. Out of these seven pitchers, there is only one pitcher with an ERA of under 4.85.

With a rotation of pitchers in their prime, many people thought that this team would have an ERA of under 4.66 this far into the season.

Their bullpen has been so bad that they traded for Jason Grilli of the Detroit Tigers who had a 4.75 ERA the year before this one.

Colorado has already tried nine different pitchers in the starting role. This is a big reason why they are one of the worst teams in the league.

With 306 runs scored so far this year, second in the division, you would think the Rockies would be in second or third right now. Not when you have pitching who has given up 366 runs, first in the division.

Yes this has been a very dissapointing season pitching wise for what was predicted to be the best pitching division in baseball. The Rockies have been awful but I am going to have to go with the LA Dodgers as most dissapointing pitching staff.

The Dodgers already had big arms in Chad Billingsley, Derek Lowe and Brad Penny. Then gained more depth in the rotation by acquiring Japanese prospect Hiroki Kuroda and getting Jason Schmidt. The team also got Esteban Loaiza mid season from the White Sox. Seemingly a dominant starting rotation. However not 1 of these pitchers has a winning record. In fact these 6 pitchers combined are 19-30.

The bullpen would be expected to be as dominant as any others in the majors with Chan Ho Park, Tasaki Saito and Scott Proctor. Saito is 9 for 12 in saves this season, Park is 1 for 1 in saves and 0 holds in 20 games. Proctor has no saves and only 1 hold in 30 games this season.

The Rockie's had a pitching staff that was heading into their prime. The Dodgers on the other hand weren't expected to be as good - many of the pitchers on their team were at least in their mid-30's.

The Dodger's pitching staff actually has a lower ERA than they did last year. Their team ERA is 3.89 - a drop--off of a lot from last year.

Colorado's bullpen has been terrible. Manny Corpas was considered a great closer but he got sent down. The rest of the bullpen hasn't been able to hold leads.

The Dodgers pitching staff has been good - they just haven't had an offense to back them up.

With the Rockies, it's the pitching to blame for the bad record.

For pitchers today the mid 30s seems to be their prime. Look at the best 4 year stretches for the great pitchers today. Randy Johnson was 36-39 between 1999-04, Curt Schilling 35-38 between 2001-2003, Greg Maddux was 31-34 between 1997-00.

I cant say that the Rockies pitching staff is a dissapointment because they didnt have a good pitching staff to begin with. Aaron Cook and Jeff Francis are the only expectations in the starting rotation and the bullpen wa expected to be run by Fuentes and Buchholz. Aside from Jeff Francis all 3 of these pitchers have been outstanding. Cook is 10-3 with a 3.29 ERA. Fuentes is 13 for 16 in saves with a 2.05 ERA and Buchholz has 1 save and 15 holds in 33 games with a sparkling 1.43 ERA. Not what I would call a dissapointment.

As for the Dodgers the whole starting rotation is a dissapointment. Lowe has been a dissapointment for as long as hes been in a Dodgers uniform. Penny was 16-4 last season with a 3.03 ERA. This season he is 5-9 with a 5.88 ERA. 1 more loss and he reaches a career high in losses and its not even the all star break yet. His 5.88 ERA also a career high. Billingsly has already reached a career high 7 losses in only 14 starts

Maybe mid-30's is pitcher's prime but Late 20's is also prime years too. but it is also great when you have six of seven rotation pitchers that are under 30 which is why many people thought the Rockies would do well.

The Rockies had good young prospects coming up that were expected to do good. They didn't. Francis, their opening day starter and All-Star candidate, is the furthest thing from his expectations.

Manny Corpas - remember him? - was supposed to close games this year. He was suppoed to be an All-Star and all of that - he wasn't. Corpas isn't even on the Rockies anymore.

Billingsley reached a career high in losses but he has had a great ERA. It has been offensive problems why some pitchers on the Dodgers are lsoing games when their ERA is sub-4.00. Billingsley has an ERA south of 4.00 but the offense isn't backing him up, hence to his record.

Colorado's offense has been good yet they are still losing games. This can only come dow nto oen thing and that is their pitching - very disapointing pitching.

Lets compare the starting rotations of both teams.

Rockies
Francis- 3-6, 5.22 ERA
Cook- 10-4, 3.57 ERA
Ubaldo- 1-7, 4.85 ERA
Reynolds- 2-4, 5.98 ERA
DeLaRosa- 2-3, 6.52 ERA

Ubaldo is a nobody so far who hasnt made a name for himself in the big leagues yet so no one expected much from him. Reynolds is a rookie so hes not doing bad for a rookie. DeLaRosa has never had a winning season and never had an ERA under 5.18 as a starter in 5 season so hes doing as expected. Cook has been great this year and Francis has been an upset.

Dodgers
Lowe- 5-6, 3.90 ERA
Billingsley- 5-7, 3.54 ERA
Kuroda- 3-6, 4.04 ERA
Penny- 5-9, 5.88 ERA
Schmidt- Disabled List

Lowe has done poorly since leaving Boston to become a Dodger. Billingsley was 12-5 last season with a 3.31 ERA, he already has more loses and his ERA went up. Kuroda pitched in the World Baseball Classic, won a bronze medal in the 2004 Olympics and led the Japan league in wins and ERA. But came to the MLB and was a major bust. Penny had losing records only twice in his career, 1 was a season cut short by injury. He has never had an ERA over 4.81 (his rookie season). Penny could be the biggest dissappointment of all MLB.

neden you were doing ok untill you threw the stats up there then you just looked foolish. 3 of 4 with a 4 or lower era for the dodgers vs 4 of 5 over 4.5 for the rockies. gotta go with the left

Yea but for who these guys are and their reputation those ERAs arent that great aside from Billingsley. Kuroda's 4.04 is awful compared to his 1.85 in Japan 2 seasons ago. Derek Lowe on the Red Sox had 3 of 8 seasons under 3.00, 3 more under 4.02 then he got to the Dodgers and hasnt had an ERA under 3.60 so his dissapointment this season is more of a continuation of the last 3 seasons. Then Brad Penny speaks for himself with his 5.88 after last seasons 3.03. Schmidt hasnt pitched for the Dodgers yet but they had Esteban Loaiza as #5 but traded him away because of his awful performance. Loaiza was 1-2 with a 5.63 ERA.

That last argument is about their reputations more than their stats. The Rockies starting rotation doesnt have a reputation as good pitchers yet, aside from Jeff Francis and Aaron Cook.
