I say yes he is.

Why do I say that? Well, the reason that I say this is that he has played almost every position except catcher and center fielder.

He has a great range factor for those positions that he has played too.

While playing first base in his career he has a 9.00 range factor and a zone rating, which is the percentage of balls fielded by a player in his typical defensive "zone," was .889.

While playing second base in his career he has a 4.79 range factor and a zone rating of .843.

While playing third base in his career he has a 2.64 range factor and a zone rating of .774.

While playing shortstop in his career he has a 4.84 range factor and a zone rating of .838.

While playing lef field in his career he has a 1.55 range factor and a zone rating of .811.

While playing right field in his career he has a 2.20 range factor and a zone rating of .874.

Mark DeRosa can play every position and he plays it well. He has a good fielding percentage for all the positions and can hit the ball pretty well also.

He knows how to play all the positions and knows how to play them well.

Mark DeRosa is the most versatile player in baseball.

My pick is Brandon Inge.

Before being selected by the Tigers, he played shortstop and relief pitcher at Virginia Commonwealth University. When the Tigers drafted him in 1998, they wanted him to be a catcher. Untill 2004, Inge was a catcher. Then he switched to third base and developed into a Gold Glove-caliber defender at that position.

Then, the Tigers aquired Miguel Cabrera in December from Florida. When the Tigers learned that Curtis Granderson was injured, he stepped in right away. When Granderson returned, he moved to 3rd, then Cabrera shifted to 1st base. Now, he is still sharing time with "Pudge" Rodriguez.

So that means if I did my math correrctly, Inge has played 6 different positions for an extended period of time, and he did it well.

He was the AL leader in range factor with a 3.26 RF in 2005 playing 3B and a 3.45 RF in 2006 playing 3B again.

Brandon Inge has been the most versitale player not only this season, but the seasons before.

Brandon Inge played shortstop in college. Has he played even 1 game at shortstop? No he hasn't. He hasn't even played an out at SS in the majors.

Inge was good at 3rd, but if he was so good, why did they trade for Miguel Cabrera, knowing they had a "Gold Glove-caliber defender"?

Inge started 11 games in centerfield this year, but hasn't played that well there.

Inge moved to third. Then he moved back to catcher, with Cabrera and Carlos Guillen switching positions. Now INge is switching starts with Rodriguez.

You didn't do your math correctly because he has played only three positions for an extended time in his career. He only played 2 games at right field, and only played 10 games in left field.

Mark DeRosa has played 4 positions in over 100 games so he has a lot of experience at 4 positions and has played them well, while Inge has only 2 positions where he played in over 100 games.

Ever since 2004 DeRosa has played 4 different positions every year and has done them well, which is more than Inge can say.

He has played well this year and he can field positions very well. He has a lot of experience at a lot of different positions.

DeRosa is most versitale

"Inge was good at 3rd, but if he was so good, why did they trade for Miguel Cabrera, knowing they had a "Gold Glove-caliber defender"?"

The Tigers traded for Cabrera because they needed another big bat in the lineup. They didn't bring Cabrera in because of his defense. Acctually, they were afraid that he wouldn't play any defense.

DeRosa has played 47 games at 2B, his primary position.
Inge has played 27 games at 3B, his primary position.

So Inge has played different positions more equally than DeRosa.

Inge:
Centerfield (11)
Leftfield (2)
Thirdbase (27)
Catcher (17)

DeRosa:
Firstbase (1)
Secondbase (47)
Thirdbase (14)
Leftfield (15)
Rightfield (8)

DeRosa has played 68 games while Inge has played 50, which gives DeRosa an advantage.

On the depth chart, Inge has been listed at 5 positions while DeRosa has been listed only at 4. The reason DeRosa has played more is:

1. Lou Piniella likes to experiment with lineups.
2. DeRosa has played 18 more games than Inge, so he has gotten a chance to play different positions.

Inge is definately more versitale.

I'm not just talking about this year...this is about career too. DeRosa played MORE positions than Inge did this year. He has a more variety of positions that he can play...and he plays them well.

DeRosa has played in 18 more games, yet he has played 20 more games at his primary position than Inge has, and DeRosa has played in more positions than Inge has too.

While DeRosa gets to play in 18 more games, that means that Lou Piniella trusts DeRosa and that he has capability to play in any position at any time, and they trust him very much. He can play positions very well as he keeps playing a lot.

Piniella likes to experiment with the lineups, but DeRosa has still been able to play well at all the positions. Plus, since 2004 DeRosa has played in 4 different positions each year WITHOUT Piniella. Inge hasn't done that...he played in only 1. DeRosa did well in several positions while INge only did well in one position.

Inge hasn't really helped the Tigers while playing multiple positions, he only helped them while playing third. He hasn't been as good as DeRosa when playing multiple positions.

Brandon Inge is versitale, but Mark DeRosa is the most versitale player.

Thank you DetroitFan.....

If you didn't catch that, Brandon Inge acctually played a game at shortstop in his MLB. I don't know if that matters much, but I just wanted to clear that up.

This superutility player has to helped the Tigers when he played multiple positions. Who do you think stepped in for Curtis Granderson when he was placed on the disabled list and contributed very well? That would be Brandon Inge.

"Plus, since 2004 DeRosa has played in 4 different positions each year WITHOUT Piniella. Inge hasn't done that...he played in only 1. DeRosa did well in several positions while INge only did well in one position."

That isn't true, Inge acctually played thirdbase, centerfield, leftfield, and outfield twice according to baseball-reference.com Plus, in 2004, he played rightfield as well.

Again, Inge is on 4 different positions on the depth chart while DeRosa is on 3. And if Inge did play more, his statistics would have been more impressive than DeRosa's.

Good luck dyhard.

June 21, 2008  04:49 PM ET

Derosa without a doubt. This season alone he has played 1b, 2b, 3b and both corner slots in OF and doing while hitting over 290

June 21, 2008  04:52 PM ET

Is anyone reading the arguements? I should at least be getting a few votes.

June 22, 2008  01:29 PM ET

I would've expected at least a etter score here. I thought you did well.
