The Philles are already winning there division but are starting to strggle a bit (lost 5 straight.) Ofcourse Chase Utley is in a slump but it happens to the best of us. Bret Myers has been really stuggling the whole season a 3-9 record with a 5.51 ERA wont cut it. The philles have the offense by far they have the relief pitching down pat now all you need to get over the hump by going out and getting Bedard or Sabathia to complement Hamels.

Really?

Bedard is currently sporting a league average ERA of 3.97. Sabathia is worse than that at 4.06. Neither of them has been a stud this season.

At least Sabathia has shown signs of recovery, and his WHIP of 1.27 is fairly good. His K rate is holding steady and he'll probably turn it around in the second half.

Bedard however has a WHIP of 1.32 and his K rate is way down from last season. In fact, Bedard's lifetime ERA is just shy of 4 and that includes last year's career best. Don't get me wrong- he's a good pitcher, but he's not necessarily going to be a second ace for whoever gets him.

Look at the Phils. Yes, they're leading the East, but the division is deep and there's a lot of baseball left to be played.

Philly is only half a game up. They have the 2nd WORST winning % of any division leader, and Florida, NY, and Atlanta are all within 5 games. I think you should be worried about making the playoffs rather than winning the pennant.

Assuming the Phils hold on, they still have to get past the best team in baseball.

All of the other playoff bound teasm are also going to be making improvements too. It's way too early to call a pennant for Philly.

I never said they would win the pennan I said they would make to the penntant. Sabathia is doing a lot better this month with a 2.60 ERA so he is turing it around and Bedard is a decente two with a 4-4 record at this point anything is better then myers. They are playing a lot of tought teams as of right now ( The red sox and The Angles) There starting pitching is stuggling with Myers as the ace. Just think about it Hamles Sabathia/Bedard Moyer Kendrick and Eaton. With a great bullpen which they have and a good offense which they have it sounds like the philles can at least make it to the NL Championship game

The NL East is currently the tightest race baseball. There are 4 teams within 4 games games of first. Plus, the Phillies are on a significant skid. Yet you seem confident that the Phils will take the division.

Because the way things are shaping up, that's likely their only path to the playoffs. The Cardinals are playing with a bunch of nobodies and still have a better record. If things continue like this, St. Louis would be the Wild Card.

You say that the Phils "are playing a lot of tough teams right now". What do you think will happen in the post-season? They'll get a bunch of cupcakes? If they do make the playoffs, it only gets tougher, so the fact that they're losing to good teams really doesn't help your case. But let's say that they hit enough, and their pitching holds up and gets them there.

How many playoff games has Bedard been in?

Oh yeah...ZERO

And Sabathia?

Gee..that 7.71 post-season ERA is going to look pretty ugly when the Phils are looking down that Cards or Cubs lineup.

Or maybe they face the D-Backs. Haren and Webb in a short series? Ouch.

Neither Sabathia nor Bedard bring you jack in terms of playoff performance.

Im talking about real good teams we beat the Cardinals 20-2 and lost on a cheap call that the left feilder traped and two errors we took 2 out of 3 from the Cubs and tied the D backs in a 4 game seris. Bedard might be amazing in the playoffs you never know because he has no experince. That 7.71 ERA is based on a small amount of games because he has only been in the playoffs once. If they get Bedard or Sabathia they are bound to win a playoff seris and thats it more is just extra for me.

-Neither pitcher has been stellar so far this year. I admit Sabathia is turning it around, but Bedard has done nothing to convince me he'll be a difference-maker.

-Sabathia or Bedard would have to adapt to a new league. There's no way of knowing how either would do in the NL. Whoever comes over would have less than half a season to make adjustments before the divisional races get hot.

-There's no guarantee Philly will even make the playoffs. They're in the most competitive divsion in baseball with a very shaky HALF GAME lead, and when the second half hits there's no telling how things will change.

-Neither pitcher has proven anything in the playoffs. Counting on either to be a second ace in a short series is groundless.

-Philly is .500 against the other likely NL playoff teams. They're .500 versus Florida. They have a losing record against the Mets.

-As I said, they have the 2nd worst winning % of any division leader.

-Finally, look at their roster. There's little to no playoff experience there. What evidence is there that they can win the post-season?

Bottom line, there's no way to say with confidence that the Phillies will make the NLCS.

Porkins just has the better argument

Bedard will absolutely wilt in philly. He needs to be in a low pressure environment that doesn't rip their star athletes to shreds whenever they go through a rough patch.

TradeAngelos that is what they said about Brad Lidge but look at him now we love him some people just dont understand philly fans

This isn't football. Its the NLCS, not the NLCG. Since the guy on left dosen't even know what the name of the round is, EASY vote right

NYGiantsSBXLIICHAMPS I bet you did not even read the argument because i made one minor mistake thats dumb

June 22, 2008  07:37 PM ET

Hopefully everyone will read and vote on the arguments. We all make typos or spelling mistakes, but that has nothing to do with what what's really being said.

June 22, 2008  07:38 PM ET

thank you porkins you deserve that 91 - 9 - 1 record

June 22, 2008  07:48 PM ET

Thanks, but TD records don't mean that much. Making good arguments and going up against quality arguers matter more than wins and losses.

June 22, 2008  09:03 PM ET

Easily vote to Porkins. Way better arguments.

In my mind that is more of an advantege than a disadvantege the hitters do not know your stuff as well as they would if they were playing you every month. With hitting Sabathia is a lifetime .300 hitter too

June 22, 2008  09:11 PM ET

vote to Porkins...his arugments are better because they amde me think

June 22, 2008  09:13 PM ET

I will vouch for TD records not meaning much. It makes me sleep better at night. I think its a bold statement that the Phils could get to the NLCS by just picking up 1 of those pitchers. They are definitely a very good team, but even the Mets are 3.5 games back now (I think). I didn't see enough of a case for those two making a huge impact. You could have taken the route of a short series being a no-brainer with Hamels-Sabathia/Bedard in games 1-2.

Well, neither of the potential acquisitions has done anything in the playoffs, so that woudn't scare me all that much as an opposing team.

True enough. It would still be a fearsome 1-2 combo in a short series though. And despite their lack of playoff success, I'm not going to get wrapped up in that. Its a very incomplete body of work.

June 23, 2008  01:48 AM ET

Nope. I still read the arguments, and my vote probably would have gone right any way

Better arguments to the right.
