The most determing factor in who wins the AFC North is the out-of-division games against the AFC West and the AFC East (assuming it's CLE or PITT)

The Browns and Steelers both play the same schedule, except for two very critical games; the Browns get to play the Bills and the Broncos while the Steelers have to play two of the best teams (if not the two best) in the league - the Patriots and the Chargers.

Those two games for the Browns are highly winnable. Buffalo as a team is overrated (they went 7-9 last year playing both MIA and NYJ twice), and their QB (Edwards), who everyone seems to have fallen in love with, is also overrated. Also, Cleveland seems to have a better team than DEN, plus the game is in Cleveland on Thursday.

Pittsburgh has a much tougher road. They have no one that can cover Randy Moss (which was proven last year), and the last time they played SD the O-line was eaten alive (and it was decent then, now it's just bad). Since PITT's O-line is now worse, and SD's D is better, the odds of PITT winning just aren't there.

Head-to-head I expect them to split, with PITT winning in Pittsburgh and CLE winning in Cleveland.

I pretty much expect them to perform the same against common opponents (such as both losing to Dallas, Indy, etc.), and if they split it means these 4 games are the most important

I feel that the biggest determining factor for who wins the division is the Steelers o-line. If it can hold up well and improve over last season, then the Steelers should be able to win the division. If it falls apart, the Browns could very well take the division.

Let's look at the advantages for the Steelers here. They have a much better defense, and one of the best in the league. Big Ben and his very good receiving corp should be able to do nasty things to that Browns defensive backfield. The Steelers have a better set of backs, a better quarterback, and a better set of receivers beyond number one. The only distinct advantage that the Browns have is up front.

The line, even with the loss of Faneca, should at least be a little better. There are a lot of young players on the line who might have just needed to gain some experience, and they had plenty of injuries on the line last season.

In fact, the Browns were only that close last year because of the problems the Steelers line had. Without the line falling apart, the running game would have improved, and they probably would have beaten the Jets.

The Steelers own the Browns, so you can't expect them to split this year.

I will admit I totally didn't see your choice coming =/

Anyways, the Browns have the best O-line in the division going for them, as well as the best RB (Lewis was better than any of the others in terms of yards+TDs), and arguably the deepest receiving class (Edwards, Stallworth, Jurevicious, and WINSLOW (the best TE in the Div)).

The Steelers didn't lose to the Jets because they couldn't run. They lost because they gave up 7 sacks - which shows that the O-line can't pass block. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't Roethlisberger the most sacked QB in the NFL?

They almost split last year, except Cleveland's defense fell apart in the second half of the second game.

Cleveland just improved this offseason, while the only thing Pittsburgh did to improve was draft a RB better than the one they currently had.

Since I still believe PITT and CLE will split the season series, it WILL come down to those two out-of-division games, because they look to have similar records against common opponents.

The Steelers will actually be much improved. Faneca didn't seem to care last year, and the line was only that bad because it was being destroyed by injuries and Mahan.

Jamal Lewis is not a better running back than Parker, he just had a healthy line blocking for him all the time. Lewis had more touchdowns because he is a short-yardage back. That is the reason Mendenhall was brought in, and he will not replace a weapon like Parker.

My Jets comment was about the sacks, but I can see where my wording could have confused you. And Ben is one of the most elusive quarterbacks in the game.

They were not that close to splitting last year. The only reason they were even in the second game was because the Steelers special teams fell apart. As somebody who actually watched and cared about the game, I remember the Browns offense looking terrible against one of the best defenses in the game. Had the special teams played better, it probably would have been a shut out.

If the Browns do manage to beat the Bills and Broncos, both teams that could surprise people, and the Steelers lose their two, then all the Steelers would have to do would be to sweep the Browns for a sixth straight year.

Jamal Lewis isn't better? He finished with a higher YPC than Parker (so so much for being a "GLB" since they normally have lower YPCs - see Addai).

Also, there's no way the second game would've been a shut out. The reason PITT got behind so fast was because Derek Anderson was getting rid of the ball way too fast for the blitz to be effective. In the second half, PITT started focusing more on coverage (dropping 7, 8 guys back), not to mention CLE's defensive meltdown on Ben's 30-yard TD run (which won the game, even though there was another TD after)

The teams are much more evenly matched this year, despite what you think. Cleveland improved all-around, while Pittsburgh did not. Don't be surprised when the series is split and it comes down to those two games, with Cleveland holding the upper hand.

As Cooz points out, ypc isn't a great indicator of who the best backs are. A lot of that depends on lines, which we agree that Cleveland has the best in the division. Parker is clearly one of the top five most talented backs in the game, which Lewis hasn't been in three or four years.

Maybe the second game wouldn't have been a shutout, but they would have score, what, seven points? Josh Cribbs was the only reason they were in that game, and an elite team should never have to rely on their kick/punt returner. Anderson's quick passes that we supposedly couldn't get were mostly incomplete. He was 16-35 that game. Ben had 79 more yards passing than the Browns had in total offense, along with Parker gaining 105. So that game should not have been close at all.

Why are they more evenly matched this year? Shaun Rogers may help, but the defensive backfield is still easily the worst in the league. Donte Stallworth is an average number two receiver these days. If he was at all above average, then why would three teams, with two desperately in need of receivers at the time, cut him year after year? The Steelers will have more firepower this season, and Justin Hartwig is an improvement.

I almost took this.

June 23, 2008  06:14 PM ET

It seems you did take it.

June 23, 2008  06:14 PM ET

Wow, BigDleech you're the third person to accept this >_<

Good luck, and I realize the title is probably HORRIBLY worded (but oh well)

June 23, 2008  06:14 PM ET

Oh and I'll be out for the rest of the night so don't expect a quick response <_<

June 23, 2008  06:25 PM ET

It's all good. I probably wouldn't be able to finish it tonight anyway.

June 23, 2008  06:27 PM ET

A few other factors I considered were head to head games, Aaron Smith, and whether or not(he won't) Derek Anderson will be able to duplicate the way that he played the first eight games of last year. People really don't realize that he sucked the second half of the year.

Great point. I have been trying to tell people that Anderson sucked in the second half for the last 3 months at least. Goodell tried to put him ahead of Romo. I may be a cowboy fan but that was just CRAZY. His numbers over the second half did not merit that contract. They should have waited like Jerry did with Romo, at least show something next year first.

June 23, 2008  06:36 PM ET

My top five quarterbacks:

1. Manning
2. Brady
3. Palmer
4. Ben(over Romo because he has been able to get it done in the postseason)
5. Romo

June 23, 2008  06:43 PM ET

I will give it to Ben for winning playoff games but I don't think Romo needs a ring to pass him. Ben was flat out horrible in the Super Bowl and the Steelers won in spite of his performance.

June 23, 2008  06:44 PM ET

They did win that game in spite of him, but he won every single game in the playoffs before that for them. He was the best quarterback in the playoffs for the first three rounds.

June 23, 2008  06:46 PM ET

Hey Nick.... The reason I put Anderson above Romo was to see if I could still win the TD. If memory serve's me correct, I still won that TD.

Romo is better than Anderson for the Record. But I will TD that Boomer Esiason is HOF Worthy too....

June 23, 2008  06:47 PM ET

Like I said I give it to him for getting their but I don't think Romo has to win it to pass him. Not saying he wont or will or that it really matters. We have a LONG great football season ahead.

June 23, 2008  06:47 PM ET

Of course he doesn't have to win a ring, but he has to at least show that he can carry his team when it comes to crunch time.

June 23, 2008  06:48 PM ET

Alright Goodell, it wasn't me and you Tding anyways, I just remember reading that and being SHOCKED.

I agree I have TDed a many a things I don't believe.

June 23, 2008  06:49 PM ET

Agreed bigdleech, but I will continue to blame Patrick Crapton even without the drops if he doesn't stop on his route Romo hits him in his hands. Game Over.

June 23, 2008  07:45 PM ET

Eli Manning is the best quarterback in the NFL. No joke, losers.

June 23, 2008  08:24 PM ET

Head to head games. The Steelers always win head to head and it decided the division last year.

June 23, 2008  08:26 PM ET

Buffalo...overrated? They may have had the Jets and Dolphins, but they also had the Pats. Also, the Bills were by far the most injury-prone team in the NFL last year. They lost more games by starters than ANY other team in the NFL last year. The fact that they finished at 7-9 while playing 7 games against playoff teams last year is pretty good.

They also played only 7 games against teams with losing records...that's not so many when you consider 4 of them were in their own division.

June 23, 2008  09:35 PM ET

Ok the Steelers DONT OWN the BROWNS!!!
And Derek Anderson is real close with Big BEn . Ben's not alot better. He only had 3 touchdowns more than Anderson last year. But also Derek Adnderson threw 600 more yards than Big Ben.
Derek is about the same if not BETTER.

June 23, 2008  09:38 PM ET

actually, the steelers DO own the browns? how many games in the past 10 played with pittsburgh has Cleveleand won? thought so.
