Rules: Best player/driver that has wore/drove the number 19, and has to be retired.

I thought I was done with these, but as I went through my TD list, I realized I was missing some numbers, so I'm going back and doing them.

My pick......

Steve Yzerman.

Bob Feller....

Pitcher for the Cleveland Indians from 1936 - 1956 (missed time due to WWII). Member of the Baseball HOF.

Here are some of his stats/awards:

266 wins
Career ERA of 3.25
8 time all-star
Won the AL Pitching Triple Crown in 1940 (most wins, Ks and best ERA for those who don't know)
World Series Winner (1948)
Led the AL in Ks 7 times
Pitched an opening day no-hitter and 2 other no-hitters in his career
Most wins in Indians History

I applaud you for the reason that you threw a curve ball, and did not go the path of Johnny Unitas. No matter how good of an opponent Bob is, he is not the true number 19.

Yzerman joined the Red Wings in 1983 as the 4th overall draft pick. Three years later he would be named the captian of the Wings at the young age of 21.

He are some of Yzerman's stats and awards:

NHL All-Star Roster - 10 times
Lester B. Pearson Award - 1989
Conn Smythe Trophy - 1998
Frank J. Selke Trophy - 2000
Stanley Cup Champion - 1997, 1998, 2002
Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy - 2003
Lester Patrick Trophy - 2006
Sixth in NHL history in points, eighth in goals, seventh in assists
First in Red Wings history in assists, second in points and goals, third in games played

Shortly after his retirement Sports Illustrated published a special commemorative edition dedicated to Yzerman entitled "Yzerman: A Salute to Stevie Y" which featured Yzerman's first appearance on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Has Bob ever had an appearance on the cover of SI?

What does being on the cover of Sports Illustrated have anything to do with it (Feller never appeared on the cover)?

Did Stevie Y ever voluntarily sign up to serve his country and lose valuable playing time? Feller was the first MLB player to sign up for military service after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He missed 4 seasons and received five campaign ribbons and 8 battle stars. His first season back, after missing 4 years, he struck out 348 hitters while going 26-15 with an ERA of 2.18 and 36 complete games - all without facing MLB talent for 4 years! It was speculated that he would have won over 350 games with over 3500 Ks if he didn't miss any time. The Sporting News said he was the greatest pitcher of his era....did anyone ever say that about Stevie Y?

Yzerman is great....is he considered the greatest Red Wing of all time? Bob Feller is considered the greatest Indian...

Forfeited Turn

Seeing how Joker ran out of time as he was typing his final argument, I'll be nice and not do an argument....I'll just leave it at this:

Is Stevie Y considered among the top 10 ever? Feller is considered a top 10 pitcher....

Bob Feller had 260 something career wins and had he not volunteered to join the navy in 1941 he would have easily had over 300 W's. He also is the only pitcher to strike out his age, when at the age of 17 he struck out 17 Philadelphia A's.

June 24, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Tbone - he has 266 (you would have known had you read the arugments)

just kidding of course.

June 24, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Keyshawn Johnson...nah, just kidding, Johnny U.

June 24, 2008  12:03 PM ET

Johnny Unitas. But I thought Joker did all the numbers already.

June 24, 2008  12:06 PM ET

According to Joker, Robert...he missed this one....

June 24, 2008  12:06 PM ET

He accidentally skipped a few, he skipped 42 also, maybe a couple others.

June 24, 2008  12:06 PM ET

he probably did but it probably got deleted when the member he did it against got deleted.

June 24, 2008  12:31 PM ET

I didn't have to read past the first argument. Yzerman...Enough Said.....

Thanks...glad I wasted my time to make an argument you didn't even bother to read....and people wonder why TD records are meaningless.

June 24, 2008  12:40 PM ET

Gotta love 11 votes based on a name and 1 initial argument basically just listing accomlishments....

June 24, 2008  12:41 PM ET

He got it correct right away. I could not agree more and nothing you can say can change that......

I didn't say "I did not read past the first argument", I just said I didn't HAVE to.

Still, why even bother arguing then if I can't make you change your mind....what if he forfeits his remaining 2 turns, is that still worth your vote?

These throwdowns are debates. The point is to get people to open their minds to new ways of looking at something. I see your a close minded individual though so why bother even reading any arguments in a throwdown. You could just read the title and vote on how you think about that.

The point on this site is to read other's point of view on sports, and sometimes they are convincing. That is why you need to read everything before the decision is made.

June 24, 2008  12:50 PM ET

If he forfeits I will change my vote! But I doubt there is anything that you can say that would change my opinion. Steve Yzerman is arguably the best two way player to ever play in the NHL (Mark Messier would be 1A). Which could also lead to the agrument for the best all around player to ever play the game. So I see it as a slam dunk.

If you don't read a TD with an open mind and vote for the best arguments, what's the freakin point of disagreeing with any opinion - especially the popular opinion ones? If someone makes the best arguments, they should win, hands down...a TD shouldn't be about who picked the popular team, name or side to argue but who presented their case the best (doesn't mean changing your mind from your initial opinion).....
