Fresno States title run is the best "Cinderella Story" that we have seen in the three major sports(college or professional) over the last twenty years

Obviously this includes football, basketball, and baseball. The team that you choose does not have to have won their respective title, so teams like George Mason, etc. are options.

Tonight's winning Bulldogs did something unimaginable. They were an average team during the regular season, floating around .500. They had to win the conference tournament to get in, and they certainly weren't expected to win the WAC tournament. But they did, and they managed to get a four seed in their regional, the worst seed you can get. They were pushed to the wall, in a winner take all game against San Diego for the regional. San Diego had won the previous game 15-1. So what does Fresno do? They come back and dominate the game 5-1.

After losing game one against 3 overall seed Arizona State, they came back to win the next two games in Tempe.

In the College World Series, they went 2-1 against number two overall seed North Carolina, blew out the sixth overall seed Rice, and went 2-1 against eighth overall seed Georgia

They were best when their backs were against the wall, going an astonishing 6-0 when they faced elimination

No team over the past twenty years has made a run of this nature

Let me start by saying that this ranks about fourth on my list. I can think of three better "Cinderella" teams in the past two decades. But I suppose I should just argue one.

I think the best was the 2007 Boise State Broncos. They beat the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl, in a game that completely epitomized David vs. Goliath. For BSU, it capped off an undefeated season. Nobody gave them a chance going into the game. I'm sure everyone knows how it went, so I won't get into too many details.

But it was one of the most exciting college football games ever, and the underdog won. The trick plays were amazing, if not miraculous. It was one of the most unexpected wins in a football game ever.

The other choices I had were the 2004 Red Sox and (you called it) George Mason.

I thought this might have been an option, but I didn't see you going there.

This game was one of the top two BCS games of all time, through ten seasons. It was a great game and an upset, but it was not a great upset.

Oklahoma may be a powerhouse in college football, but they weren't neccesarily an elite team that season. After Texas won the national championship the previous season, the Big 12 went down into a bit of a spiral. The pollsters didn't think it was such a big upset, because Boise State was only two spots behind Oklahoma in the AP poll, and they were ahead of them in the computer rankings. Oklahoma was a good team, but they didn't have a real leader.

Boise State, on the other hand, was underrated the entire year. They had a much better offense than Oklahoma, with a far superior quarterback and a better running back. Boise State probably would have even won it in regulation had Zabransky not thrown that terrible interception.

Besides, this Cinderella story was only one game. Fresno State faced elimination six more times than that.

They had tons of injuries, a very below average bullpen, but they still managed to upset top eight teams one after another.

Fresno State did have a very improbable win, but they got really hot at the right time. Once they started winning, a lot of people got behind them and thought they could do it. They gained support, momentum, and confidence along the way. By the time they reached the last three games against Georgia, a lot of people thought they would be able to win.

I just think the football game was the best because nobody gave Boise a chance beforehand. Like you said, they played a weak schedule, so everybody thought that once they faced a Big 12 team they would lose. Going undefeated in the WAC didn't earn them a lot of respect, so the victory was a surprise to almost everyone.

And for the record, Boston Red Sox in 2004 and George Mason are still both better than Fresno State. I'm just not arguing those ones.

Isn't any Cinderella story about a team getting hot at the right time?

I don't know what you mean by "nobody gave Boise a chance beforehand". As I pointed out, the people that voted on in the AP poll thought that they were pretty close. Most people thought that Oklahoma would win, but most people also gave Boise State some chance.

How can you even compare the two? Nobody, and I mean nobody, gave Fresno State a chance to come out of the region. They were in one of the toughest regions, and Long Beach State was supposed to be the team with a shot at the title from the region. People didn't think they could even come out of the region. They HAD to win the conference tournament just to make the field.

If this was ranked like March Madness, they probably would have been a fourteen or fifteen seed. Boise State was one of the top eight teams in the country. They may have played an easy schedule, but they went through it without a hiccup.

Boise State went up against a team with pretty similar talent, but Oklahoma was not a "Goliath" that season. Fresno State had to beat four or five Goliaths.

They were down 5-0 and down a game to Georgia, but their offense exploded to win it

Excellent points. I'm gonna be honest, I don't really have anything else to say. It would be stupid to just repeat everything. Fresno State was good, Boise State was good. Let people vote now I guess.

Nice throwdown.

NO WAY! vote right when i can!

Giants had a nice cinderella run. They beat an undefeated team. They were not better than than Fresno, and I have a feeling this guy will go with the Giants.

And peach, I'll keep that in mind next time I see one of your throwdowns.

i have a good idea of one, but i will wait for Loco to put his out there

I was going to go ten, but I thought I would give them more options. I can think of a couple more choices from 88-97.

They were the equivelent to a 13-16 seed in basketball, they lost every game posible to lose and still win it all, they had tons of injury's, they played 9 top 25 teams in the touri, doesn't get much better than that

Cinderella Story? I guess, but it can't compare when you have two of the best pitchers in the game on the mound.

I don't think people realize how low a four seed is.

Report Offensive Comment

MD, would you please stop giving him so many ideas?

George Mson which made it to the Final Four as a mid-major 11 seed, sure they didn't win but that was just huge. They knocked off powerhouses UNC, Michigan St., and Connecticut.

Ok, sorry bigdleech. What about after he picks.

Report Offensive Comment

Do I have to pick just one, or can I make a case for all three? Because the only thing I'm trying to prove is that Fresno State ISN'T the best.
