Don't give me the Richard has the most wins all time bull mess, because Dale or Jeff Gordon would have shattered it with cupcake competition and racing over 30 years, I mean every race back the it was either Petty, Pearson, or Allison winning every race, I mean dam they had the ever so challenging Co-Co Marlin actually competing in the top 5 usually.

Dale and Petty both have seven championships, and Dale has 76 wins, sixth all time, and pretty damn good when your facing guys like Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, Jeff Gordon, Rusty Wallace, Bill Elliot, Terry Labonte, Davy Allison, and much more.

Richard was the first real superstar in NASCAR, but Earnhardt was way more popular in his prime, and was the first real bad boy.

One last thing for this argument, Earnhardt was Mr. Consistency, He was in the top 10 week in and week out, he could take a car that should just be scrapped off and turn it into a good points day.

Please don't just vote on the fact that Petty is the all time leader in wins, I mean you don't consider Cy Young the best pitcher ever.

Defend your comment Cassidy

Career wins:

Richard Petty=200

Dale Earnhardt= 76

Whatever Dale E.'s era was, he is 124 wins shy of Richard Petty.

NASCAR is all about wins. Nobody gives a flip about who finishes 2nd.

Look at last Sundays race: who finished second? Well Kyle Busch won and.........David Gilliland finished second. Who cares? Win or go home. Nobody cares about career top 5's or 10's, its all about getting to the Winner's Circle in NASCAR and Richard Petty did so 124 times more than Dale, Sr.

Dale Earnhardt Sr. was a great NASCAR driver no doubt. His legend is heavily due to his death however, being so that he died on the track in 2001 at Daytona, than how much better he was than the NASCAR icon Richard Petty.

Anybody that knows NASCAR from its inception in 1947 knows that its all about wins, just like every other sport. 2nd place is the first loser.

How is Jeff Gordon doing these days? Well considering he is racing against just as many racing legends as Dale, Sr. did, not so bad.

Popularity? The most popular driver in NASCAR today is Dale Earnhardt, Jr. He has zero championships and 7 career wins. Popularity means jack.

Cy Young is one best pitchers ever. Hello!

First off I must correct some of your errors, Jr. has 18 career wins, and I said the beast for Cy not one of the best.

How is the legacy of Dale Earnhardt mostly because of his death, sure his death caused drastic changes in safety, but he was The Intimidator, and winning the championship is more important than winning individual races, which both have 7.

Richard started full time in NASCAR at around 20, Earnhardt's rookie year was 1979 when he was 29, and Dale raced a total of 22 years plus the 2001 Daytona 500, and Petty raced from 1959 until 1992, so if Dale would have race that long he would have had at least two more championships and had around 120 wins.

Competition is what makes it hard to win in todays NASCAR, but Petty had Pearson and Allison, and that was it, I mean it's like the 85 Bears winning the super bowl against the 85 Pats, it wasn't much competition, but had it been the Pats of today it might have been a different story just for an example, and I personally would rather win a few rces here and there, being consistently in the top 5 than winning 10 races a year, but not winning the championship because my average finish is 35th when I don't win, no more room.

Jr is a pathetic piece of overrated crap. He is living off his father's legacy. His 18 wins or whatever r irrelevent because he has 0 championships. Y is he the most popular driver in NASCAR 2day besides 0 championships? Well maybe cuz just maybe the name Earnhardt has a built in over-rated factor from the get. No doubt.

Cy Young has the best pitcher of the year award named after him. To dismiss him as not the best makes you MLB naive.

He got the nickname Intimidator because of his driving style. He had to drive that way to win. You know what Richard Petty's nickname was? The King.

Nobody has won Daytona, NASCAR's signature race more than Richard Petty: 7 times.

Nobody has won more races in a single season than Richard Petty: 27 in 1967 including 10 straight.

Richard Petty is widely considered he greatest NASCAR driver of all-time:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Petty

Nobody has had more poles(123) or top 10s(712) in the history of NASCAR. Nobody.

Dale Sr. shouldnt be rewarded in this argument because he started his career 9 years later than Richard. That just means Dale Sr. didnt really have a calling for this sport.

Petty>Earnhardt

Earnhardt started his career a full 20 years after Petty, and believe me I am in no way defending Dale Jr, I even mad TD about how much he sucked, but Petty won his last race in 84, so went eight seasons with no wins, he won his last championship in 1979, so he went 13 years without a title, Dale Earnhardt was competitive until the end, he finished second in points in 2000 at the age of 49, and he won two races that year, and had the best 5 year stretch from 1990 through 1994 winning the title in 90, 91, 93, and 94, he is the only driver to win consecutive championships 3 times, 86-87, 90-91, 93-94, and I can't express enough how much competition controls how you compete, and I will take this from a comment bellow, ealier in Petty's career they did have a lot more races per season so he had more opportunities to win and the fact that he raced 10 more years than Earnhardt, imagine if Dale started when he was 20 instead of 29, he wouldn't have broke the win record, but would have certainly broke the championship record.

If Dale was the same age as Petty, raced the same amount of time, and started at the same time, Dale would have won more races, with that competition out of room^%&^

You dont get to 200 wins without being competitive.

Dale Sr was competitive also. However, not on the grand scale that was "The King". You dont get labeled with that moniker if you were second best to anybody.

I could go on and on and rehash what I have already said above, but there is no point. Either you think Petty truly was "The King" or you think the "Intimidator" was somehow better behind the wheel.

I say we let FanNation decide.

I love nothing more than a uphill battle, I should be the underdog in this due to topic and opponent I love times like this.

June 25, 2008  10:28 PM ET

They also raced like 60 races a year.

June 25, 2008  10:32 PM ET

It's COO COO Marlin, dumbass!!! Vote went right, based on that AND the fact that King Richard got to 7 titles FIRST.
God, people are lazy on here...

June 25, 2008  10:32 PM ET

Who cares if Dale was more of a "bad boy"? Petty was the better driver. If you say that he was the first real superstar, then that says a lot about him.

June 25, 2008  10:33 PM ET

great vote based on spelling and the fact that Petty started his career 20 seasons earlier.

June 25, 2008  10:35 PM ET

Richard was a good driver with alot of wins ,but Dale's will to win made him the better driver. He's sling shot you, bump you out of the way or hit you on the way by. He was always thinking 1 thing. WIN.

June 25, 2008  10:36 PM ET

Richard Petty won all his championships before Dale was even in NASCAR, so take that DC Sports Nut.

June 25, 2008  10:49 PM ET

RIchard Petty is called "The King" for a reason. Voting right.

June 25, 2008  10:50 PM ET

as much as I am a Dale Earnahrdt Sr fan, Petty is still better

the order of best drivers ever:

Richard Petty
Cale Yarborough
Bobby Allison
Dale Earnhardt Sr

June 25, 2008  10:55 PM ET

Jeff Gorden? David Pearson? Get your head on straight Gonets.

June 25, 2008  10:57 PM ET

Jeff Gordon as much as I hate him will be the third best ever when he retire, and best ever if he can tie the championship record.

June 25, 2008  10:59 PM ET

*retires^

June 25, 2008  11:04 PM ET

Hey outlaw, my brother is on the phone and he needs me to help him move. I will finish this tomorrow.

June 25, 2008  11:05 PM ET

take your time, just don't forfeit your turn, this is a great TD.

June 25, 2008  11:19 PM ET

I'll wait for Cass' next argument.

June 25, 2008  11:29 PM ET

I like Cassidys argument

June 25, 2008  11:34 PM ET

I was going to avoid voting on this one, but the fact that you went through and voted against me on my other ones forces me to lean left.

June 25, 2008  11:38 PM ET

I voted against you because your arguments were inferior, unlike mine in this TD.

June 25, 2008  11:39 PM ET

Really, even in the one about Griffey?

June 25, 2008  11:40 PM ET

Cassidy with all do respect, I see our arguments even, neither inferior or superior to the other.
