SIFS Tournament- Which NBA team that missed the playoffs this year has the best chance of making the postseason next year?
G.O.A.T. said 06/26, 10:52 AM
My pick is Indiana. They missed the playoffs by a mere one game last season in the weaker conference (top-to-bottom that is) and have just made a trade to get rid of Jermaine O'Neal (big contract; not doing much on the court). They also addressed their weakest position by getting TJ Ford in the trade. Here is their backcourt for next season:
PG- TJ Ford
SG- Danny Granger (20 pts, 6 reb, 2 ast)
SF- Mike Dunleavy (19 pts, 5 reb, 4 ast)
Now they need to improve their frontcourt with draft choices. NBADraft.net has them taking Anthony Randolph and DeAndre Jordan to go down low with Troy Murphy (12 pts, 7 reb) and Ike Diogu.
The only other teams I could see you mentioning would be Golden State and Portland. But, honestly, in a tougher conference, do you really seem them having a legit shot at making the playoffs? At least in the East you have some teams that could fall off next year and make room for Indiana: Washington, Toronto, or Philly. The top eight teams in the West are all going to be just as good, if not better, next season.
Bottom line is this: good trade + good big guys in the draft + easy conference = playoffs. Not that hard to understand.
Bring it, Cheez.

That's a really nice pick, and it could happen, but I have another team in mind on the west coast. The Portland Trailblazers. The Trailblazers were in the weakest division in the West last year, with the Utah Jazz and the Denver Nuggets being the teams that made the playoffs. Portland finished as the tenth-best team in the West last year (which is respectable seeing the teams that are in that conference) with a 41-41 record. That record came without their number one overall draft pick, Greg Oden. But they still managed to avoid a losing season.
This year they will have Brandon Roy as a reliable guard/foward--he led the team in scoring last season--and big men in Greg Oden, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Travis Outlaw. In tonight's draft the team has the 13th overall pick, which could be someone good like Brandon Rush. My guess is they'll be looking for a guard.
With all of that talent coming into next season, there's no doubt in my mind that Portland will be able to wake up and smell the postseason. If they went 41-41 WITHOUT Greg Oden, the top pick in last year's draft, think about what they CAN do this year with Oden on the floor and a 13th overall draft pick.

I had a feeling this would turn into a Greg Oden debate. He is an injury-riddled unproven center and you're counting on him to get your team into the postseason? I suppose that gives a new meaning to the term "high hopes".
You said the Northwest is the weakest division in the West, yet the Blazers finished THIRTEEN games back of first place. What does that say about Portland if that's the weakest division?
I doubt Portland will draft Brandon Rush tonight, and if they do, he'll be playing behind Brandon Roy, a guy who averaged 38 minutes per game. If they draft a point guard, which seems much more likely, they'll probably go for DJ Augustin, an undersized true PG out of Texas. He's only 5-11 and plays defense that is mediocre at best.
Indiana has TWO reliable wing players in Granger and Dunleavy--the team's two leading scorers last year--and a solid point guard in TJ Ford. Troy Murphy is underrated and Ike Diogu can make an impact if given the minutes. In the draft, they have both the 11th and 17th picks. Now, tell me. Which situation sounds more appealing to you? I'd take mine 10 times out of 10.
Indiana has a better chance at getting into the playoffs next year.

Okay, you want to talk injuries? Mr. Savior, T.J. Ford, who is supposed to have "addressed their weakest position" on the Pacers lineup, is also injury-prone. Fast fact: the two big names in the trade, Jermaine O'Neal and T.J. Ford, combined to miss 71 GAMES this past season. And you're saying Oden isn't the best guy to rely on? Well, it isn't too great when you rely on a man like that.
"What does that say about Portland if that's the weakest division?"
That says Portland didn't play the best ball this year. But again, Oden is going to be on the floor this year, something that Portland didn't have this year despite going .500. They also are going to have a strong draft pick, which means more fire power. Just because the Blazers did bad this year doesn't mean they can't erupt next year (Boston proves it's possible, even if it's on a larger scale).
Look, it doesn't matter who they get with their first pick in the draft, the fact is they WILL get somebody good. You cannot tell me that there isn't any talent after the 12th overall pick. And being in the worst division, a mediocre division, if all they get is "medicre at best" talent, it'll still help.
Portland will improve.
G.O.A.T. said 06/26, 07:34 PM
There's a big difference between TJ Ford's injury problems and Greg Oden's. Ford has been out on an NBA court and proven that he can compete before; Oden hasn't. In fact, in the playoffs, Ford averaged 12 points, 7 assists, and 4 rebounds while playing only half the game (24 min)! Just think what he could do with 35-40 minutes a game. Oden has been injured since high school. I think that's a little bit worse than Ford. Completely different players, completely different situations, uncomparable.
Boston has nothing to do with this. They made a flurry of offseason trades which catapulted them into the NBA's elite. Portland will do no such thing with all their young talent.
Honestly, do you think Oden will make up for a nine-game differential between them and the Jazz? Do you think he will lead them into the postseason in his first professional season? It won't happen, and you can't rely on a rookie to do that for you.
Indiana is right there. They're so close. They made a move for a point guard and a nice draft pick, and they'll be fine next season.
Bottom Line: Indiana is more postseason-ready, is an easier conference, has just as good of talent, and better draft picks.
Cheezhead: Is Back (For Now) said 06/26, 08:02 PM
It doesn't matter who did what when or where. We know that Oden can play basketball. We know that he is fragile. We know that T.J. Ford can play basketball. We know that he is fragile also. So it seems to me that the Pacers and the Blazers are in the same situation, so Ford doesn't really give the Pacers an advantage in this throwdown. He can get hurt as easily as Oden can.
Like I said, the Celtics did it on a larger scale. They went from zero to NBA Champs. The Blazers are at .500 right now, which is better than worst. Sure, they aren't going to make any blockbuster trades like the Celtics did, but playing Oden this season with their first draft pick. That should be good enough to improve, and they don't need to improve as drastically as Boston did.
First off, the nine-game differential is between them and the Nuggets. Secondly, yes, Oden and the draft pick will be able to make up nine games, and maybe even more. Greg Oden brings a lot to the table, and you can't tell me somebody like that ISN'T worth a few more wins. Seriously, a number one draft pick has to do SOMETHING to a team.
Portland has more to offer this year and has what it takes to do even better and make it.

You could have made a case for Chicago or maybe even New Jersey, they still have great players, if they can find the heart they will make the playoffs

Unless Chicago makes a big trade for a post player, I don't see them doing anything, esepcially with a rookie point guard.

Hova, my basketball coach is buds with Tinsley so it looks like we both have a connection to him. haha. Thanks for the compliments though, DJ and Hova. I appreciate your reading the throwdown. And, yeah, DJ, I agree Tinsley should go and probably will end up going.

Woah, trades happen dude. They got Jarrett Jack and Brandon Rush on the Pacers now. This changes a lot.

Well...one injury does not make you riddled. And the fact that Portland was .500 in 07-08 means that even without Oden they can compete in the much tougher West.
Indiana was well below .500. Coupled with the arguments, I have to give a slight edge to Cheez in this one. But great points made by both.
