I say the Chicago Bears are the team most in need of a running back.

After their 2006 Super Bowl appearance, the Chicago Bears traded away Thomas Jones, figuring that former first round draft pick Cedric Benson could do the same job as Jones for a cheaper pricetag. Boy were they wrong. Between his ineffectiveness and multiple citations by the police this offseason, Benson is a thing of the past.

So now, the Monsters of the Midway are left with Adrian Peterson. No, not that one, the one from Georgia Southern. Also, they have Garrett Wolfe, who seems to be too small to succeed in the NFL, and an unproven second round draft pick named Matt Forte.

On a team where the quarterback situation is null, and there's nobody in the receiving core who's a deep threat (when your TOP TWO receivers are tight ends, you've got a problem), the rushing game is a NECESSITY for the Bears. Unfortunately for them, they have nobody to do that duty well, which is why I say that they're the team in the NFL most desperate for a running back.

Good choice Hemo.

I'll go w/ Detroit Lions.

1st off, AP needs to be given some time. He has 5 starts in his career, all LY. Here's the 5 teams he's faced as a starter..NYG, WAS, MIN, GB, and NO.

2 of those teams AP has faced are ranked in the top 5 in RUSH D, 3 are in the top 10, and all 5 are in the top 15. So it's not like he's facing an easy competition, not to mention he got 102 yds vs GB

First the team stats.

rush categ.........CHI....................DET

rush att LY..........423 (19th).........324 (32nd) last in league
total yds LY.......1330 (29th)......1288 (31st)
rush att PG....... 26.4 (19th)....... 20.3 ( 32nd) last again
rush yds PG..... 83.1 (30th)....... 80.5 (31st)
YPC...................... 3.1 (32nd)....... 4.0 (19th)

As you can see, DET is more abysmal in the rushing dept. They are ranked dead last and are in the very bottom tier in almost every rushing statistical categories. DET is worst. That's why they're "most in need" of a RB.

Losing KJones and Duckett is detrimental in that it gives them a significant lack of depth. Losing them makes DET more emaciated at the RB position.. more so than CHI losing CBenson.

Here's the thing about the Lions and their running game:

MIKE MARTZ WAS THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR!

Now that Detroit's going to normalize their offense instead of passing it 37 times a game (fourth most in the NFL).

Detroit was last in the NFL in rushing attempts, so the statistics that you use are null and void except the yards/carry value, which shows the Lions were 19th in the NFL, which is nothing to sneeze at.

The Lions released Kevin Jones because of his injury history. You have to have a DEPENDABLE option at running back.

TJ Duckett has never had more than 800 yards in one season, even in the rush heavy early 00's Atlanta offense.

Tatum Bell, however, has two 900+ yard rushing seasons, 2005 and 2006, and has a career average of 4.8 yards per carry.

Meanwhile, on the Chicago Bears, Garrett Wolfe has a 2.8 yards per carry average for his career and Adrian Peterson a 4.0 yards per carry average, including 3.4 yards per carry last year.

As for the argument that Peterson got 102 yards against the Packers, it took him THIRTY CARRIES to do that, giving him a 3.4 yards per carry average in that game. Adrian Peterson, like every other Bear, is not a feature back in the NFL.

Martz took the Rams to the SB as the Off. Coordinator in '00. RB was Faulk...this is key, If Martz did it with STL, why not DET? Reason being DET is in incorrigible shape. The lack of effective rushing attack is manifested..hence a consistent RB is a dire need.

CHI did not need a prominent RB in '06. Who was their RB back then? Thomas Jones, who was a bit of a disappointment LY with the Jets. It only takes a player of his caliber to take CHI to the promiseland. They don't exactly need a Jim Brown. CHI has been a playoff team with FREQUENCY despite the lack of a true RB..so it's not like they are in "most need of one".

When was the last time you've seen DET in the playoffs? It was back in '99. They have been to the playoffs 6 times in the 90's....and it took a high caliber RB to take them there..one of the greatest of all time..Barry Sanders. CHI..all they need is one with Thomas Jones's caliber.

See a disparity here? ...DET needs a consistent RB like Sanders to alleviate their debilitated not to mention non existent rushing attack. Hence, to be competitive...DET must have a high caliber consistent RB while CHI can do without, and a SB appearance can attest to that.

Ahh, but you've forgotten that the Bears had Muhsin Muhammad and Bernard Berrian then. Now, the Bears have nothing in their receiving core.

Comparatively, the Lions have Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson.

Chicago had so much more than JUST Thomas Jones, I can't believe you even think that's possible. They had one of the best defenses ever. Now, they have absolutely 0 offense, so they need a running back so that they've got something.

Meanwhile, the Lions have a great passing offense and a running back who has rushed twice for more than 900 yards and has a 4.8 yards per carry average over his career in Tatum Bell. The Bears have nothing of that sort.

The rookies edge also goes to the Lions, as Kevin Smith for Central Florida rushed for more yards than anyone in college football history except Barry Sanders. Matt Forte didn't rush for as much, and was on arguably a better team.

Martz didn't run in St. Louis either. Faulk was used as much or more in the passing game.

THE LIONS WERE LAST IN RUSHING ATTEMPTS LAST YEAR, THAT'S WHY THE LOW STATISTICS.

PER CARRY, THE LIONS WERE NINETEENTH IN THE NFL IN RUSHING, WHILE THE BEARS WERE THIRTY-FIRST.

That is why the Bears need an RB more.

"THE LIONS WERE LAST IN RUSHING ATTEMPTS LAST YEAR"

-which explains in my favor DET's lack of confidence in the running game. And why is that?...DET doesn't have a consistent, reliable, RB.

AP vs. Bell...each had 5 starts LY. Bell had less success avg. ONLY 36.3 YPG ..AP avg. 64.2 YPG vs. top rush D's. AP will do better.

Pass to rush ratio.

DET.. pass ATT 587 / rush ATT 302...means DET rush 33.9 % of the time
CHI....pass ATT 567 / rush ATT 405...means CHI rush 41.6 % of the time

DETs pass/rush ratio is more lopsided... a true indicator that they can't establish a running game. 2/ 3 of the time, their plays are pass..makes it pretty obvious for the opposing D on what to expect. It's why Kitna is sacked so much. 3rd n long situations that resulted from an ineffective rushing attack on prior downs.

Key losses.

KJones and Duckett account for 916 of DET's 1288 tot. rush yds. LY. That's 71.1 % of rush offense lost.
Benson had 674 of CHI's 1330 tot. RY. Only amounts to 50.6 % lost.

With DET losing KJ and TJD..they are MORE emaciated as far as depth. Bell to compensate? not in DET.Maybe in a Shanahan system.

The draft will help, but DET is more desparate.

Good luck, El Bandito

forte is French for strength, therefore, he's strong and will succeed. Plus, Adrian Peterson is awesome, so anyone else named Adrian must be just as good.

And Garrett Wolfe is amazing. People said Warrick Dunn was too small too.

Why can't I vote yet?!

Garrett Wolfe also didn't produce when given the opportunity.

June 26, 2008  04:32 PM ET

Goo luck to you too Hemo..I know you've been on a tear lately so I am in for a tough ride. lol

June 26, 2008  04:32 PM ET

Good^

June 26, 2008  04:36 PM ET

I will expatiate on the key losses next because I believe they are important regarding depth.

Nice start...

June 26, 2008  05:04 PM ET

There are two great choices. What does this tell us about teh state of things in the old Norris division?

June 26, 2008  05:21 PM ET

"Garrett Wolfe also didn't produce when given the opportunity."

No one produced in Chicago last year.

Besides, need I remind you about the one year Warrick Dunn had 2.8 YPC?

June 26, 2008  05:30 PM ET

Although I can say Detroit and Chicago both found their RBs of the future

Kevin Smith and Matt Forte will be good.

If anyone needs a RB it might be Houston

June 26, 2008  05:31 PM ET

Matt Forte might be the answer for the Bears

And Kevin Smith for the Lions

June 26, 2008  05:32 PM ET

Bengals maybe????

Rudi is done!!!! 2.9ypc

June 26, 2008  05:34 PM ET

Ahman Green and Chris Brown are in Houston

"Bengals maybe????

Rudi is done!!!! 2.9ypc"

Injured last year, but overrated.

Besides, if Kenny Irons can stay healthy he'll beast.

June 26, 2008  05:38 PM ET

"Ahman Green and Chris Brown are in Houston"

Both are old and injury prone. Green pretty much has nothing left in the tank, and Chris Brown has never played a full season in his life, plus he's overrated.

In fact, Tennessee started a torn-meniscus LenDale White over him last year, what does that tell you?

I'd like to thank the people who voted in this TD when each side had one argument up, congratulations.
