We should just get rid of the BCS.

Ah, the BCS it is the most controversial topic in sports today. Let me show why it does not work.
Example #1 in 2003 an Oklahoma team that had just lost the Big 12 title game 35-7 got into the National title over a 1 loss USC team that actually won it's conference. Huh? Didn't Georgia just get hosed from the title game for the reason they did not win their conference. I know it makes 0 sense.
Example#2 In 2004 there were 4 undefeated teams including the SEC champion Auburn. After USC destroyed OU 55-19 it was clear OU did not deserve to be there, bu the 2 other unbeaten teams Auburn and Utah both had a legit claim to the Title going unbeaten.
Example 3 In 2006 there was a 1 Loss Michigan team that did not win it's conference and a 1 loss Florida team that did win it's conference, though it was universally accepted that Michigan was the better team. Florida got in and destroyed the Buckeyes, but Boise State went unbeaten and was left without a shot for the National title.
Example #4 In 2007 after a rash of upsets any one of these teams could make have made a claim to the BCS title game appearance WVU, Georgia, LSU, USC or OU, but all were left out.
Next I will show a solution.

The BCS has its problems but shouldn't be removed, it should be tweaked along with a couple other items:

For instance - either all conferences have conf title games (like the Big 12 - OU won their conference regular season but lost the playoff game, while the Pac 10 doesn't have a postseason) or none do - that would eliminate the discussion of regular season title versus 1 game playoffs. Any team can win their outright conf regular season and have 1 bad game for the title (similar problem in NCAA basketball).

All conferences should be considered BCS conferences - this would give the Boise State/Hawaii teams to make it to the championship game.

Give more weight to out of conference scheduling - make teams have to actually face real teams not bottom of the barrel teams just to make some money.

The BCS is a great idea if it is tweaked to fix the issues it has...don't get rid of it because it is much better than a bunch of sportswriters giving the title shot/ranking to the teams....at least the BCS lets 2 teams go at it head to head and not just be given the title because they finished #1 in the rankings.

Even if all conferences have title games what does that do? So we know who the champ of the conference is big deal, it might complicate things, because more teams that would have gone to the title game might lose in a conference title game and get knocked out of going to the title game causing situations like what happened a year ago to occur, simply a playoff is the answer and until we go to a playoff we will be unable to crown a champ, so we need to get a playoff or just scrap the BCS all together, either way it isn't really the BCS's fault a system like it just will not work plain and simple we need to have the champ decided on the field like every other sport in college athletics.

the problem with conf title games is not all conferences have them, plain and simple. USC doesn't risk losing to the 2nd best team in their conference as their last game while teams like OU and LSU do.

As for a playoff - you will still have the same issues as you do with the BCS...who is #1, who is #8, who is #9 and thus gets left out?

What kind of system would be fairest to determine the playoff seedings? That's right the BCS with some tweaks.

I do agree that a playoff is needed, but the BCS is what would be used to determine the playoffs or would you go back to having the writers only determine who the top 8 teams are or would you just take 8 conference winners (would that be regular season or 1 game conf title game winners), which conferences don't get included, which #2 conference team gets left out but they have a better record than another conference's #1 team? A playoff without the BCS cause even more problems.

Quite simply the BCS is not that bad, in fact I think it is decent, the problem is that in todays world of parity, the only way to decide who is the best team left standing is by a playoff. While I am realistic and realize this not happening, the next best thing is to get rid of the BCS all together and go back to the way things used to be. Simply put the BCS will not cut it and does not crown a true champ until the day it is gone, we will not know the true champ in college football

So you want it to go back to the way it used to be? With the writers alone determing who (from only the big schools) decides who is the #1 team in the nation? That's the way it used to be....no game on the field to determine who it is (at least now they have a game, whether or not you agree that the correct teams are playing in it, at least there is a game.

You want a playoff? That is fine too, but what would you use to determine the seeds - the writers again or just the conference winners? Then let's listen to the people complaining that their #2 team in their conference who's only loss came from losing to the #1 team in their conference is sitting at home while a #1 team from a conference with 2 losses gets in. Even with a playoff, the BCS with some tweaks will be needed to determine the seeds.

No system is perfect, even with a 8 team playoff, the #9 team will be complaining that they deserve to be included.

At least with the BCS it is not a bunch of biased writers ranking who is the best and handing out the championship based on who they believe is #1.

and it has to be the red jello, not the green....the green slows you down, the red speeds you up.

June 26, 2008  02:41 PM ET

Not true for Bizarro Stowe. He thrives on green jell-o.

June 26, 2008  03:04 PM ET

I like rstowes idea of making ALL conferences BCS confs.
The idea of LSU tagging Mississippi State or Middle Tennessee for a couple of 44-0 & 45-0 wins right out of the box for money ain't right. It's like a bribe ... "we'll pay you .....if you play us "
They would'nt give in to the money so fast if they were in line for a BCS payday instead.
Leaning towards rstowes argument so far

June 26, 2008  03:12 PM ET

Yes

But Stowe has a better argument and POV

June 26, 2008  03:32 PM ET

The BCS allows the champ to be determined on the field....it may not be perfect but it's the best thing yet.

June 26, 2008  03:49 PM ET

get rid of the bcs postseason but use it to decide seedings of an 8 team tournament over 5 weeks within a january to february time frame

June 26, 2008  03:49 PM ET

using the bcs bowl sites as well

June 26, 2008  03:53 PM ET

so head kick you agree to keep the bcs in some fashion yet voted for the guy who said to get rid of it? yup, makes sense.

that was in my 2nd argument.....

June 26, 2008  04:03 PM ET

stowe hit it on the head....i dont want some biased sports writter putting some B.S team into the nat title game....BCS breaks down % and for now is the most logical way to do busniess....keep the BCS for rankings and use it to build a playoff...ive been preaching that in everyone of these BCS td'd......

and Buckeye....you for one should want to keep the BCS....god knows OSU wouldnt have gone to the big game if it wasnt around eh?

June 26, 2008  04:09 PM ET

Before the BCS, two polls determined the national title game.
With the BCS, a few more polls are added, and together they decide the national title game.

So what the hell is the difference?

It's easy to complain, but the fact is that there has never been a fair or comprhensive way of determining bowl matchups. I've been watching college football for almost 30 years, and it's not better or worse now than its ever been.

Vote right.

reading error on my part rstowe, changed vote

USC was playing the best at the end of the college season last year and a playoff would have determined a real national champ
