My choice is the Montreal Canadians 1976-77 team.
Stanley Cup Champ (Losing only 2 games in the entire playoffs and swept 2 series including the final)
Regular Season Record 60 Wins 8 Losses 12 Ties 132 Points (2nd most wins in a season (Detroit had 62 in 95-96) fewest losses ever in a season and most points ever in any NHL season)
Home Record of 33 wins 1 loss 6 ties
Scored 216 more goals than they gave up that season (387 - 171)
1st Team all stars (4 out of 6 positions)
-Ken Dryden (G), Larry Robinson (D), Guy Lafleur (RW), Steve Shutt (LW)
Major Trophies won that season by the Canadiens (other than the Stanley Cup)
Hart Trophy - NHL MVP - Guy Lafleur
Art Ross Trophy - Scoring Champ - Guy Lafleur
Conn Smythe Trophy - Playoff MVP - Guy Lafleur
Jack Adams Trophy - Coach of the Year - Scotty Bowman
Norris Trophy - Best Defenseman - Larry Robinson
Vezina Trophy - Best Goalie - Ken Dryden
Arguably the greatest Stanley Cup team ever in the history of the NHL.

Well instead of arguing which Canadian team was better, I'll go outside the Canadians dynasty and into the start of another dynasty:
the 1983-84 Edmonton Oilers Team
Besides having a great team, this Oiler team had better individuals than the Canadians club you boast (it is close though and I mean no disrespect the great Habs teams)
Oilers credentials:
Stanley Cup Champs (Losing 4 games in the entire playoffs and sweeping 2 series as well)
They defeated the Islanders who were looking to win their 5th straight cup. The Canadians didn't defeat as great a foe in their cup finals win.
The Oilers broke the NHL record for goals in a season with 446. They averaged an NHL Record 5.58 goals per game. They had 3 50 goal scores and 4 100 point players
Greyzky had 205 points and won the Art Ross.
Besides the Art Ross, Gretzky won the Hart Memorial, Lester B. Pearson, Plus/Minus Award, and was named the NHL first Line Center
Messier won the Conn Smythe
Besides arguably the greatest player ever playing for the Oilers, they had Jari Kurri, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Grant Fuhr
This Oilers team started the Oiler dynasty and had the greatest NHL player of all time leading them

It's interesting that you mentioned the Islanders who had 4 straight Cups as that is who I thought you were going to pick. I would have ranked the Oilers as a close 3rd in that era (60-85) as they won only 2 cups before 85 & 3 after.
Sure the 1st Cup win for Gretzky & Co was great, but how can you compare that to winning 10 cups in 15 seasons (1965-1979) with 4 straight from 76-79.
"The Canadians didn't defeat as great a foe in their cup finals win" well the fact is they utterly dominated the entire NHL during those 4 straight Cups wins especially during the 76-77 season when they only lost 10 games the entire season (8 in season and 2 in playoffs). They beat both the Islanders & the Bobby Orr's Bruins in the playoffs that year.
Sure the Oilers had the greatest player in the NHL but look at the Hall of Famers on the 76-77 Canadiens...
Yvan Cournoyer - HOF 82 - #12 was retired by the Canadiens
Ken Dryden - HOF 83 - #29 was retired
Guy Lafleur - HOF 88 - #10 was retired
Serge Savard - HOF 86 - #18 was retired
Bob Gainey - HOF 92 - #23 was retired
Larry Robinson - HOF 95 - #19 was retired
Guy Lapointe - HOF 93
Jacques Lemaire - HOF 84
more in the 3rd agrument...
Dookie: Here We Go Steelers said 06/27, 03:23 PM
Seeing as we were going by individual season and not by a collective team, I picked the Oilers. The fact they only won 2 before 85 is irrelevant and immaterial.
"They beat both the Islanders & the Bobby Orr's Bruins in the playoffs that year."
--Not the Islanders that had won 4 straight cups before then.
You want to look at individuals, let's do it...
Let's examine the NHL's all time leaders in a couple categories:
First off, let's look at Points
1. Wayne Gretzky 2,857 pts
2. Mark Messier 1,887 pts
10. Paul Coffey 1,531 pts
16. Jari Kurri 1,398 pts
...
23 Guy Lafleur 1,127 pts
Goals
1. Wayne Gretzky 894
7. Mark Messier 694
17. Jari Kurri 601
. . .
20. Guy Lafeur 560
Goaltending Wins
9. Grant Fuhr 403
12. Andy Moog 372
. . .
Ken Dryden 258 wins
Hmm, so in every category I have at least 2 players (including my back up goalie) before we have 1 of your guys.
You might have had more HOFers, but I had much much better QUALITY of hall of fame players.
That Oilers team was the start of the new NHL, with emphasis on scoring and speed.
FoosBall...Licensed 2 ZING! said 06/28, 11:06 AM
1st off Dryden only played for 7 seasons playing only 397 games with 46 shutouts, winning 5 Vezina's. Fuhr played almost 18 seasons, Moog 12 seasons. Dryden was the most dominant goalie of the 70's.
Remember the topic is "Best Stanley Cup TEAM"...not individuals! The Canadiens of 76-77 were clearly the best. And were the most dominant team of that era. They had the highest amount of wins in a season at 60 until the Red Wings beat it 95-96 with 62 even though the season was then 2 games longer. The Canadiens still have the record for fewest losses with 8 in the season in 76-77.
As for the Oilers they were arguably a better TEAM after Gretzky left when they won their last cup in 89-90 with Messier leading them.
Also it sounds like you are saying the players I listed don't deserve to be HOFer's? But they played as a TEAM & won Cups as a TEAM. & that is why they are in the HOF! Show me another team with as many HOFer's on it that are not the Canadiens. The Oilers were run and gun, but were they the greatest of that era NO.
The Canadians with 10 cups in 15 seasons (65-79) were. And the most dominant Canadiens team was the in 76-77.
That as Porkins likes to say is "AWESOME"!
Dookie: Here We Go Steelers said 06/28, 11:43 AM
Dryden did only play 7 seasons, but you can't use it as a positive in this sense, and you can't take it away from my guys that they actually had longevity.
A team is made up of individuals, and my individuals trump yours. Also, it was only the Oilers 5th year of existence in the league. The fact they built up a dynasty in only 5 years is amazing and must be considered.
"As for the Oilers they were arguably a better TEAM after Gretzky left when they won their last cup in 89-90 with Messier leading them"
--1. 89-90 was outside the years defined
2. You actually think a team is better after the greatest player to play leaves them?
The Oilers did have to play another round since the Canadians earned the first round bye in 76/77. So the Oilers actually had 3 more wins in their playoff run.
While the Canadiens did have a great team, the Oilers were the better team. They scored at an unheard of rate of 5.58 goals per game. They had the greatest players all time in Gretzky. They had 2 of the top 20 players in Kurri and Messier. They had one of the best offensive defensemen in Coffey. They had 2 of the top goalies all time in wins in Moog and Feur. Top team of their era

I would like to see the final arguments on this. I would lean to the left as the greatest team for a single season and cup winner. However, there is a glaring error in the argument that neither has picked up on. There is also the matter of playoff format that has remained untouched.

Had to lean to the right on this one. Both had stellar arguments.
And I am glad to say that I made it farther than one of you. I just hope I don't have to see the winner in the future of the tournament.

Vote to the Left- Right did have 4 great offensive players. However the Canadians of 76-77 were a COMPLETE TEAM- from top to bottom. Dryden was head and shoulders above Fuhr and Moog.
Season-76-77 Habs playoff-12-2 GAA 1.51 and 4 shutouts.
Season-83-84 Oilers playoff- 15-4 GAA 2.93 1 shutout.
The NYI drive for five speaks volumes in that they were on a down turn with tons of hockey played. The Format the NHL adopted for that year also hurt them. The 3-0 sweep of the lowley W-Jets was a gift.
Finally- The Bruins were statistacally better than the NYI as an opponent in those respective years.
That said...Bobby Orr never touched the ice. His final playoff appearance was in 1974-75.
Right wasted an entire argument with career statistics after admonishing Left for going beyond the season in question.

Oilers and the Islanders were the best teams of the 80's. The Islanders were the best in the early 80's the Oilers from the mid to late 80's. The issue also is that the Oilers won 3 of their 5 Cups after 1985. Where as the Canadiens dominated the era in question 1960-85 (10 cups in 15 seasons 65-79) . With the 76-77 TEAM being the best Canadiens Team ever! And dominated that season from start to finish.
