The New York Giants and Jets are building a fancy-pants new Stadium. It is estimated to cost $1.6 Billion which is an exorbatant cost even by today's stadium standards. Since the Giants don't have that much money they've decided to screw their fanbase for some quick cash via a "Personal Seat License" scheme. The following letter was sent to Giants season ticket holders:

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/giants/Text_of_letter_sent_to_Giants_season_t icket_holders.html

What it amounts to is the following:

"You, the season ticket holder, have to give us between $1,000 and $20,000, in return for nothing, or we'll take your season tickets away. Oh, and you should be thanking us for this."

The Giants are mugging their most dedicated fans. If the new ridiculously priced stadium has the team in such dire financial straights that they must resort to abusing their fans in this way, they should either plan a cheaper stadium, put it on hold until they can raise the money themselves, or scrap the plans altogether. Personal Seat Licenses are a sleazy way of trying to suck money from their fanbase, while giving nothing in return.

Disagree?

Well I'm going to clarify a few things before delving face down into this quagmire of a topic.

1. The Giants need not be the focus of this PSL 'scheme'. This is hardly a new topic.

2. This isn't about funding an exhorbatantly priced stadium. This is simply following suit with the league. There are already a dozen teams involved in this, and some are more expensive. The Cowboys haven't won a playoff game in years and they are doing far worse.

3. This isn't an NFL-only situation. A few MLB teams have the same PSL scheme going on.

So there are several angles to take. Is this an assault on the average fan? Sure it is. But as far as cost is concerned, is it any more of an assault than $10 beer, $20 magazines, or anything else they charge for? I'm surprised they haven't charged for oxygen.

This is simply a necessary tactic to take to finance a stadium. All they are doing is following suit with the league. If we can crucify the Giants and Jets, we can crucify the Ravens, Cowboys, Eagles, and a host of others (including the laughable-til-now-Texans). If they are to ensure their profitability commensurate with the rest of the NFL, they must issue the PSL's.

So...you justify bad behavior by pointing to other teams bad behavior? Yeah, officer, I know murder is wrong, but I saw a lot of other people doing it so I figured I would too. I understand that the Giants are not the only team employing tactic, but that in no way excuses them.

Let's call a spade a spade. Giants fans now have to purchase the right to purchase tickets. I can't think of another industry where this sort of preposterous fee would fly.

Let's not be naive. The Giants don't NEED this stadium to "be competitive." The owners WANT the stadium so they can roll around on an even bigger mattress stuffed with money. They WANT this stadium so they can point at Jerry Jones and his meager $1 Billion stadium and laugh because they grotesquely abused even more money on their stadium. There is nothing "necessary" about a $1.6 Billion stadium.

Here's a wacky idea. Just raise ticket prices. It would accomplish the same thing. Instead they want to sneak this by without causing an uproar, hoping that their fans are too dumb to realize when they're being bent over a barrel.

There's no justification for that.

I think using the murder analogy is a bit much...kind of like my mother saying: "if everyone was jumping off the bridge, would you?"

The NFL is a business. If your competitors are employing new strategies to maximize profitability, and you are the nice guy, you are going to be the nice guy with no money eventually.

Again, this isn't just about the Giants. They are building a $1.6 billion stadium for two teams. Secondly, they aren't simply taking advantage of a Super Bowl win, as this was coming regardless.

You may not be able to think of another industry where this flies, but all 3 major sports have at least one team with PSL's.

Ticket prices always rise. As does the cost of merchandise, parking, and refreshments. But those are just marginal increases. They're still killing you softly. This is just a bigger blow.

I'm sticking with my stance from earlier. If there are over a dozen teams utilizing this method, why should the Giants stand idly by? To be the good guys? I think it will be difficult for the average fan. But I can't sit here and tell someone how to run their business.

Worst case - you can flip the PSL via re-sale - and make a sizeable profit.

"If they are to ensure their profitability commensurate with the rest of the NFL, they must issue the PSL's."

This point actually made me laugh. The Super Bowl Champions, in the largest media market in the US, with a population of 17 Million people to sell jerseys and hats and Eli Manning bobbleheads to, can't compete with Jacksonville (pop. 800,000) or Green Bay (pop. 100,000) without doing this? Just how inept of businessmen are they?

"What you can get away with" and "ethical business practices" are very different things. Other franchises exploiting their fans is not a valid justification for doing the same. This is not a cut-throat industry where if the Cardinals charge for PSL's it will put the Giants out of business.

"If there are over a dozen teams utilizing this method, why should the Giants stand idly by?"

Because the Giants organization supposedly has class. The Mara family should not stoop to phony fees on their core fans just because they can get away with it. What's next? You have to buy the right to look at the field from your seat? To use the stairs? This has to stop, and the Giants should have made a stand.

The fact that they won the Super Bowl has no bearing. This was being set into motion regardless.

You mention the fact that the Giants are profitable and compete with franchises that earn less. This is just the beginning, and has more to do with the NFL than any ONE team. Revenue sharing is a key part of today's game. I can't fathom that over a dozen teams, and now the Jets and Giants, suddenly decided for themselves that this was the way to go. If they abstain, they are creating revenue issues. The NFL is a collaboration of teams. A corporation. They are all operating on the same wavelength, unless you're Dan Snyder.

If the Giants are among the top 5 in profitability, shouldn't they have the right to maintain?

The organization has class. But as I said, this goes beyond the Giants. This is an organizational decision (the organization being the NFL).

These licenses can be re-sold at a profit at the owner's will.

Nobody says anything when prices for everything else skyrockets. We pay to watch. I can't sit here and tell my team to operate their business differently from half the teams in the league if it could jeopardize their financial position.

Its all about Big Business

But

I don't think it's a big deal. The Titans did it when they moved to Nashville. You pay for each seat, and it's YOURS. We "sometimes" get first dibs on tickets to other events at the stadium, too.

And... if you decide you don't want your seats anymore, you can sell them for more than you bought them for. There's a waiting list for tickets/seats in Nashville, so I KNOW there is a bigger waiting list in New York. What sucks is that the Giants just won the Super Bowl, so they are taking advantage of the opportunity to charge more than they would if the Giants had gone 5-11 last year.

PSL fee is not a big deal. One-time thing. I agree with Moondizzle that "if they are to ensure their profitability commensurate with the rest of the NFL, they must issue the PSL's."

Why should either fan be happy? Should Dallas and NYG fans be ticked about this?

Mugging? I disagree. I think "financially raping" would be a better term.

June 30, 2008  11:00 AM ET

its a good deal when you look at what the Cowboys are charging for PSL's

June 30, 2008  11:02 AM ET

It will cost Dallas Cowboys season-ticket holders from $16,000 to $50,000 just for a personal seat license

June 30, 2008  11:06 AM ET

Good deal???

LOL

June 30, 2008  11:09 AM ET

Hey! I've thought of another good deal! 662, you give me $500 and I'll do nothing. Compared to the Giants and Cowboys, that's an even better deal!

June 30, 2008  11:12 AM ET

it was said tongue and cheek,,,

June 30, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Sorry, didn't catch that.

June 30, 2008  11:22 AM ET

I think this is a pretty good topic. Its a difficult situation.

June 30, 2008  11:27 AM ET

Justify those votes via comment section people...since the TD is still running.

Yes, your stupidity has doomed you, like in all of your TDs.

June 30, 2008  11:28 AM ET

I think the Giants should start charging for fans for air consumption. That's an untapped market.

June 30, 2008  11:34 AM ET
