SIFS Tourney: For Team USA, which player would you rather take on your roster: Tyson Chandler, Paul Pierce, or Tayshaun Prince?
Bigdleech said 06/30, 04:14 PM
After considering the eleven players on the roster not named Tayshaun Prince, my choice between these three would have to be Tyson Chandler.
The Olympic roster has two very good small forwards on the team in Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony. The decision to take Tayshaun seemed like a waste to me. Pierce has shown great heart over the last year, and he is a great leader, but the team will get enough leadership from players better than him. The US team does not need to have three quality small forwards on the roster, when they only have one power forward and one center.
Now they should have selected Tyson Chandler for a couple of reasons:
1) He is a center. Chris Bosh is only 6-10, and he is a natural power forward. So when Dwight Howard is out of the game, team USA is going to be pretty short at center in the much tougher form of international basketball.
2) If Dwight Howard gets injured, there will not be a single natural center on the roster. Chris Bosh would probably have to play the entire game. Chandler would be insurance for this. Because if Howard gets injured, team USA could get beaten up on the boards, with only one real post presence.

This one has to be Paul Pierce.
Out of all the people that are options for this spot on the roster, Paul Pierce needs to be the No. 1 option. He just won the NBA Finals MVP award, and who better to have on your roster than the player that just came off his best performances ever.
As for the theory that they will only have two true big men if Dwight Howard decides he can not participate, well, Tyson Chandler is their No. 1 alterate, so if anybody can't play, Chandler can step in and provides depth up front.
Chris Bosh CAN play the center position, backing up Dwight Howard when he is on the bench. Bosh has a 7'4" wingspan, and that really makes him a possible center because Bosh is known as a forward-center. Plus, if needed, when a big man is in foul trouble, Team USA can go smaller and put either Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James at the PF position.
Anyway, Tyson Chandler, even with his size, hasn't really put up the numbers expected from him. I don't think he can succeed with how physical the international game can be (that's not a joke). He has mostly benefited from Chris Paul's climb of stardom. Most of the time, Tyson Chandler gets him points from Paul's alley-oops.

On a twelve man roster, it is never good to have only three big men to play the two positions. There is no need for three small forwards when you only have one center. Melo and Lebron are great players, but they should not have to play the four at all in the Olympics.
Chandler may not be a huge offensive presence, but he does shoot about 63%, which is about three or four percent higher than Howard. His 12 per game isn't anything special, but he doesn't need to be big on offense for this team. USA has enough scorers with Kobe, Lebron, Melo, Redd, etc. He would be there to man the boards, which he does very well. He actually grabbed one more offensive rebound per game than Howard in the tougher conference.
The point is, team USA needed a second center much more than they needed a third small forward. Pierce would only be number three on the depth chart anyway, and I doubt the team will ever have to go to the third stringer during competitive games.
The choice to not take Chandler may really hurt the team if they have to play an overtime period. Chandler may not be as physical as Howard, but he is still a very good defender.

So, your saying they need to go with talent more than need? Well, that's just like saying the Bulls need to draft Michael Beasley just because they don't have a good big man. That's not the point. They need a better team and with Paul Pierce, that's what you get.
The problem is, if Dwight Howard doesn't participate because of injury, Tyson Chandler jumps in. Again, Carmelo, LeBron, or Pierce can all jump in and play the PF position for Team USA.
Bosh: 36 mpg
Boozer: 35 mpg
Howard: 38 mpg
They all have the ability to play over 3/4 of the game without a problem. They will be fine without another big body down low. Anyway, do you not know who your talking about leaving off of Team USA. It's the Finals MVP, a player who averaged 20-5-5 during their playoff run. He's the hottest player as of right now in the NBA. Nobody is playing better than him. Pierce IS a physical player. He can bang down low. There isn't a problem with him not being productive.
LeBron: 7.9 RPG
'Melo: 7.4 RPG
Pierce: 5.1 RPG
All of their small forwards are rebounding threats, so Coach K won't be afraid to insert them at PF at times. Pierce is also another shooter Coach K would like to have.
Bigdleech said 07/01, 03:51 PM
The team will score enough points. They need people that can grab rebounds down low. Sure, Lebron or Melo could step in at power forward, but they never play there, so you can't expect them to step in and play extremely well there.
For all you know, a big man could get injured early in a game. Despite the average minutes that they play, the small forward moved to power forward would likely have to play at least twenty minutes there during the game. I wouldn't be comfortable doing that.
Pierce is only the hottest player because he had so much around him. There are clearly plenty of players better than him, and the Olympics are two months after the finals, so momentum isn't that big of a deal.
There is no need to have three small forwards. Even if Lebron went down, you could play Kobe there when Melo was on the bench. He would fill in very well there. They just did not need a third small forward.
Pierce may be a little better than Chandler, but they needed Chandler much more than Pierce. They should have chosen the twelfth and final spot based on need, not on talent. It's how every other team choses the members, so why should team USA be any different?
Denis24 said 07/01, 10:23 PM
Do you realize that the international game is much more different. They let you get away with a lot of more physical play. You get pushed and bumped around downlow under the basket. You can even put both hands on your defender and ride him all the way down the court while you guard him. That is why the bigs won't get into so much foul trouble, the game is different. They'll be able to get through the game without any worries.
The game is only about 1 1/2 hours in length. The bigmen won't get as fatigued as you think they will.
Howard: 14.2 RPG
Boozer: 10.4
Bosh: 8.7 RPG
That's enough rebounding you will need during the 48 minute game. And trust me, if Coach K tells LeBron or 'Melo to play the power forward position, they will play it, and well. These players are commited, and they aren't stupid enough to commit a 3rd foul with a couple of minutes left in the 1st half.
Remember the last time Team USA participated in the Olympics? Roster: Duncan, Marbury, Iverson, James, Jefferson, Stoudemire, Marion, Wade, Odom, Anthony, Boozer, and Okafor.
Guard: 3 (Starbury, AI, Wade)
Forward/Center: 9 (TD, James, RJ, STAT, Marion, Odom, Melo, Boozer, Okafor)
Result: Bronze

Vote to the right, after seeing Paul Pierce's performance in the finals he deserves to be on the team.

Paul Pierce lacks Chandler's defensive skills. I think the team would be better off with Chandler's defense and Pierce really isn't needed seeing as how they should have plenty of scoring.

Gotta stay small with Pierce because I think he should be on the team. Could be the primary sub for Lebron and he can play D, did you miss the finals.

Only when he wants to. I don't know. Either way they should win but I think Chandler will be better for defense and I think he will want that gold medal more. Pierce would be a better sub for Lebron over Anthony though. Anthony is my least favorite player in the league.

Of the 3 players Chandler, but of people who didn't make the USA team I would take Al Jefferson over any of the three you mentioned.

Pierce is the better player, by far. But the make-up of the team dictates the better fit here...I have to go left in a close one.
Good job.

With the lack of size on the team I would rather have Chandler.
