5th SIFS Tourney: Which team that is leading their division at this moment is in the worst position to make the playoffs?

Eligible teams (6/30): Tampa Bay, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Philadelphia, Chicago Cubs, Arizona

I have to go with the Tampa Bay Rays.

They have three teams (Red Sox, Yankees, Jays) within 5.5 games of them. Each one of those teams is capable of catching the Rays from 5 games back, especially the Red Sox and Yankees, two teams that have been in these situations before and are experienced in getting back into the race.

Also, the AL East second place team is not guaranteed the Wild Card, especially this season. Minnesota is hot right now and is four games back, Oakland is five, both are capable of late season runs with the teams that they have this year.

The Rays are young...some of them are inexperienced, and that, paired with playing in one of the toughest divisions in baseball, is the reason that they are in the worst position to make the playoffs.

I'm going to pick the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Leading the NL West with an anemic 41-41 record, the Diamondbacks are the most vulnerable team who are leading a division.

The last month that the Diamondbacks played .500 baseball was April. Since then, they've proceeded to go 21-33. The Rays have only lost 32 games this year altogether.

They haven't won more than 3 games in a week since the week of May 11th.

The Diamondbacks only have one player on the disabled list, and he's only been there since the end of June, and the Rays, who were leading the division without him, just got Carlos Pena back from injury.

The Rays are .500 on the road. The D-Backs are .395.

The Yankees are 5.5 games out, and the Jays are 10 games out, so I'm absolutely digging the misinformation as well.

Youth in this argument is null and void, as both sides are incredibly young and nooblike, sorta like Cheezhead.

The fact that the Diamondbacks ACTUALLY DO have two teams within five games of them is more impressive than the fact that the Rays really don't. The pitiful baseball says that the Diamondbacks are the most vulnerable division leader.

Wow...I read that completely wrong...I meant to say...the Yanks and BoSox are within 5.5 (now 6.5) games. The Jays shouldn't have even been mentioned...The Orioles have a shot, but it's still EIGHT games...

Since June 1st, the Dodgers have gained ONLY TWO games on the D-backs, who went 9-16 since then, and the Giants have gained 3 games. The Dodgers are WORSE on the road than Arizona, and SF is atrocious (14-24!) at home. The Dbacks have been playing like crap, but nobody's gained a huge amount of ground.

The Rays have gained a half game on the Red Sox and none on anyone else, so they haven't lost a cushion and haven't put themselves out of reach at all. The Rays have been playing well, but the other guys haven't lost any ground.

The Rays are going to have to deal with a Red Sox team that is getting one of it's best hitters, David Ortiz, back from an injury, while they get Pena, who's back to his career averages, back.

The fact that they even have any teams close to them is ridiculous...the NL West has been incredibly weak this year, the Dodgers, Giants, and Rockies are not doing anything at all...The Rays have to deal with two other teams that are very dangerous...

This is for the playoffs, not just the division; remember that.

At .500, Arizona would be fourth in the NL Wild Card if they were overtaken, while the Rays would lead by 4 1/2 games in the Wild Card if they were overtaken.

With one, even minor, acquisition, the West could be one. All it would take is the Dodgers or Giants committing themselves to adding another top of the line starter or any left-handed power (will sell Ibanez), and they could overtake a team which is 12 games under .500 since May 1st.

The Rays have the best record in the AL East over the last 10 days and the last 20 days, so they're playing good baseball, and that was largely without Pena, last year's Comeback Player of the Year.

Tampa Bay has the wild card as an option, they have two berths in the playoffs that are achievable, whereas the Diamondbacks' pitiful record makes them, even now, ineligible for the Wild Card.

The Rays have the most wins against teams in their own division than any other team in baseball excepting the St Louis Cardinals, so it makes it hard for them to be caught if they're beating up on all of the teams behind them.

Oh, and by the way, the Rays are now leading Boston by 1 1/2 games.

You've got to look at who they are competing with the in the wild card...The D-backs have the the Cardinals, so that is probably not an option for them...the Rays have to hold off the Twins, A's, and Yankees. Even with a four game lead, that's a very large task. Basically, it looks like the division win is the best and only option for these teams.

You talk about trading for talent...the Rays have THE team for that in their division...the Yankees need pitching badly...they'll be trading for a Livan Hernandez or a C.C. Sabathia at the deadline to relieve a struggling Rasner or a Sidney Ponson...The Red Sox are probably going to be in the hunt for a 5th starter, or as you said, shore up some role players and they will get better. Everyone trades at the deadline, and the Yankees are the team that always seems to be mentioned...

Did you miss the fact that the DBacks are 20-8 against the NL West? Talk about beating up on your division.

The fact is, no matter how much the DBacks keep sucking it up down in Phoenix, there's no one that's surging up to usurp their division lead, while no one in the AL East is backing down one bit, no matter how much the Rays keep winning....

The DBacks would be fourth in the wild card.

The Twins and A's aren't aiming for this year to be their major runs.

The wild card is a very good opportunity for the Rays, seeings that they're leading it now by 5 1/2 games (if you discount their division lead).

The Dodgers are well above .500 against the NL Central (and they're the only team in the West to say that and they've played the most games against said division), one game under .500 against the East, and at .500 against the West, so they're actually BETTER than the DBacks in the NL, and interleague play is complete.

The Diamondbacks accomplished 17 of their 20 NL West wins in April (their hot month) and haven't won a game in the NL West since May 15th.

The Rays have won five division games since the last time that the Diamondbacks did.

Also, the Yankees have shown a reluctance in recent years towards selling out the farm system to get players, instead choosing to hang on to such prospects as Philip Hughes, Ian Kennedy, and Robinson Cano.

If everyone trades at the deadline, don't you think the Rays, with their incredible farm system, would be one of the first teams to make a major move?

I will wait for the arguments but you have to give credit to Hemo for picking the D-Backs they have been horrid of late. Oh and they Ray's have been great. So it's an odd pick for Super.

June 30, 2008  09:40 PM ET

I see where this is going. So far I am leaning left because Hemo so far has not told us about how the Red Sox, and Yankees will do worse than the teams in the Diamondbacks division. However, that is what 3 arguments are for. Good argument, guys.

June 30, 2008  09:43 PM ET

Hemo. Wow. You know what I'm talking about. Just...wow.

June 30, 2008  09:47 PM ET

I know the D Backs stink lately. But who is overtaking them? They can actually be as bad as they want, when you think about it. Rays dont have that luxury. Will wait for arguments.

July 1, 2008  12:11 AM ET

I'll vote to hemo. He has the better arguments.

July 1, 2008  12:20 AM ET

He did that in my last one too...

July 1, 2008  05:12 PM ET

Phillies, I think.

July 1, 2008  06:47 PM ET

I have to go with Hemo. The way the Rays and Red Sox are going at each other, they will end up like the Yanks and Sox of the past where second place in the AL East was basically the Wild-Card.

July 1, 2008  10:46 PM ET

He did that in my last one too...
Super Squirrel | 07/01/08, 11:39 AM

I'm not use to TD teams, and I'm also not use to NOT voting on a TD.
