After resigning Andre Igoudala, Philadelphia 76ers NEED to outbid Atlanta for Josh Smith. For the fans and for their own success

Second in the league in BPG.

Averaged 17.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.8 blocks and 1.5 steals
3rd player in history to average at least 17.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.8 blocks and 1.5 steals in a season. The others are Hall of Famers David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon (source philly.com).

He's only 23!

Josh Smith's defensive prowess added to Samuel Dalembert and Andre Igoudala would make Philadelphia a young great defensive team. Add to that young athletic players like Thaddeus Young, Rodney Carney, and Marreese Speights would make Philly an exciting young team that can put points on the board.

This could make Philly look like the Portland Trailblazers of the the east. A team nobody wants to play and a team that in a few years could build enough chemistry to develop into a contender.

Atlanta's big contracts with Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby make them vulnerable to losing Smith.

As you mentioned, Philadelphia resigned forward Andre Igoudala. They return a slashing small forward who can do it all - except shoot. When you look at the 76ers, you get a team full of defense an athleticism. They have Dalembert in the middle rejecting shots and thieving rebounds. They have Andre Miller and Willie Green outside, and at power forward and underachieving Thaddeus Young. The addition of Josh Smith would be nice, but a larger issue that they need to address is shooting. Philadelphia has plenty of athletic defensive guys, but they do not have anyone who I would trust to step outside and hit a clutch three pointer.

No. A better decision would be for the 76ers to dip into free agency to pick up a perimeter threat and a solid power forward. Some good options to look at are Indiana's Kareem Rush, who would be a good value and who shot 38% behind the arc last season, James Posey, and Eddie House.

As far as their need at power forward, they should focus first on finding a shooter. If they have the cash after this, then the signing of Josh Smith should be considered. There are other effective solutions at the power forward that are less expensive.

No, No, No, Kareem Rush? Even Billy King could do better than that. Eddie Stefanski would be run out of town if that's the best he could do this off season.

Ask any Laker fan, or any basketball fan that watched the finals (this season and every other season), DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS! You can never have too much defense or rebounding.

One of the things Mo Cheeks figured out this year is that this team needs to get stops and get out on the break. That is what won them 2 games against Detroit. Josh Smith can finish better than any big man Philly has right now. Andre Miller is an excellent point guard and ball movement, rebounding, and fast breaks off of defense and rebounds is how they will be successful. Plus signing Josh would put the excitement back in Philly.

I'm not putting Kareem Rush in a position to be in a starting rotation. Philadelphia's bench is shallow enough as it is, and signing a player like Smith adds nothing to that element. We saw last year how bad a lack of a true shooter killed the 76ers, and this will again be detrimental to a deep playoff run if it is not addressed.

If you look at the defensive-oriented teams of the past that won championships, all had a shooter, whether in the starting rotation or coming off of the bench. A good example of this is the Detroit Pistons. At the core of the team was a stingy defense, but they were also bolstered by the perimeter games of Joe Dumars and Isaiah Thomas. The Boston Celtics this year were a defensive team, but they had the outside stylings of Ray Allen, Eddie House, and James Posey. A team cannot win a title with no 3 point threats, and the 76ers are no exception.

Keeping a team one dimensional is a bad decision. Although they will have shut down defense, and some able slashers, they will not be able to hold down teams like Boston, and won't be able to score enough points against teams like Detroit.

Philadelphia had one of the best shooters in the league, traded him and got better. Why because he couldn't play defense. A guy by the name of Kyle Korver, maybe you heard of him. From what I hear, he's a pretty good shooter. It's pointless if he can't guard anybody.

You are forgetting the most important element, these players are young and their offensive games will come. Andre Igoudala has improved his game every year, so has Josh Smith. Rodney Carney has a jumper and so does Thaddeus Young. As these players grow, so will their games.

As far as Kareem Rush goes (I can't believe we are even talking about this guy), why sign a player if you don't expect him to have an impact. Josh Smith gives you impact and more.

these players are young and their offensive games will come.

No. no. no. You don't just go four seasons in the NBA and improve your shooting. You improve court awareness and intelligence. A player does not just 'improve' over 1 season to clutch 3 point status.

A guy by the name of Kyle Korver, maybe you heard of him. From what I hear, he's a pretty good shooter. It's pointless if he can't guard anybody.

You can't stereotype a perimeter player as a sloppy defender. Plenty of shooters are renowned for great defense as well. Rip Hamilton, Ray Allen, to name a few. On top of this, trading Kyle Korver was a weak decision. Sure the team got better, but this isn't attributed to that trade. The production of Philadelphia's core players went up, and so did win total. Many games were lost on account of poor shooting.

Also, there are things called 'examples'. This is what Kareem Rush was. I was pointing out they needed someone with Rush's three point prowless for their slashers to kick out to.

You don't just throw a bunch of guys on the floor with the same abilities and expect to win. You address the needs you are weakest in before blowing your budget on one guy.

Good TD

I'm guessing you don't watch very many 76ers games. The athleticism of the team is great, but they can simply not shoot. Why pick a defensive oriented player and ignore what they need from their perimeter game?

Overpaying for someone can get messy... just ask the Knicks

July 2, 2008  02:57 PM ET

They need shooting but you cant pass up a physical freak like Smith

July 2, 2008  03:09 PM ET

More offense can be generated by more possessions off of rebounds. Plus Kareem Rush isn't the answer for any team.

Smith isn't a good fit here. The Sixers need shooters for their drivers to kick to.

July 2, 2008  08:22 PM ET

the shooters thing is better the 76ers have a good defensive player in AI already

July 2, 2008  09:13 PM ET

I'm voting ---------->
The 76ers already have plenty of Josh Smith type players. Young guys who play good defense and have freakish athleticism. They don't need more, and the last thing they need to do is spend $12 million on a free agent. They need shooters, shooters, and more shooters. They don't have that knockdown shooter than you always have to be considering on the perimeter like most teams do.

I say they go after Eddie House and/or James Posey. But I hope to god that Posey resigns with my beloved Celtics. That guy is incredible.

They had a shooter in Korver...They have key players similar to Smith and Smith is not to great inside the box. He is a great pickup for whoever gets him

Would rather have Brandon Rush than Kareem Rush. You can never have too much defense.
