The Yankees greats list is riddled with Slugger after Slugger; however, the greatest Yanke of all is: The Chairman of the Board: Whitey Ford. Whitey wore the Yankee Uniform from July 1950 till the end in 1967 (spent 2 yrs in Service).
In the Stripes he won his first 9 career games (gaining his first loss in relief).
Will begin with a simple list of accomplishments:
8 time All Star
6 World Series Titles
Cy Young Award
Series MVP
3 time AL pitcher of the yr
Babe Ruth Award
Retired Yankee Jersey
HOF
236 Wins (Best in the Stripes)
.690 winning percent (best all time for guys with 300 decisions)
2.75 CAREER ERA

15 time All-Star
Retired #
HOF
2150 Hits
.285 BA
.348 OB
.482 Slugging
Played C, OF, 1b and 3B

Pitching is more important than Hitting: When we hear the history of course the bats take the cake, but when we watch the series this year which will take the cake? Thats right, the Pitching just as it has since the game has been played.
With the Yanks it???s very easy to get caught up in the offense and forget the Great pitching through the years. However, for over 15 seasons Whitey was the NY go to guy. Here is an interesting Stat: during his career Whitey was 236-106 for .690 percentage, with him on the bench during his tenure the Yanks were 1250-921 for .576 percentage. Through a run including 6 series titles they won 12% more of their games with him on the mound than without. Impressive. Ford put up 45 shut outs and 8, 1-0 wins. Wow. 1960 WS he through 2 complete game shut outs, they lost the series and Stengel was fired (some believe) b/c he didn???t pitch Ford 3 games (sat him game 1) as Ford wanted.
Ford has the most all time WS wins, starts, innings, and strikeouts amongst all starters.
Whitey Ford is the greatest Yankee
rstowe said 07/03, 11:56 AM
Berra played in 14 world series for the Yankees - that's right 14 of them in his 18 seasons with the Yankees - they won 10....
Yogi is 5th all-time in Yankees history in ABs, 3rd in games played, 8th in Runs scored, 8th in hits, 5th in HRs, 5th in RBIs....for the most part the guys he follows in those stats are either Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, Bernie or Jeter.....
When discussing the best catchers to ever play the game it normally comes down to a discussion between Bench and Berra.....Ford was a great pitcher (especially in his era) but is not amongst the discussion of best ever.
Frank Pentangelli said 07/03, 12:35 PM
Ah but were not talking about best ever. Were talking about best Yankee. Most productive Yankee. The Yankee who gave the most. That is Whitey:
So we have the Bat vs the Pitcher, neat thing from 1950-1963 (minus 51,52 army) they played together. They share 6 World Series Titles. Just a tidbit.
1950- Whitey won the series ending Game 4 by pitching a scoreless game through 8, then 2 were given up in the 9th due to a fielding error. Still 8 hitless WS innings in your first series start??? Wow
1961- Whitey went 2-0 giving up 0 runs and 7 hits.
The simple fact is in playoff/series/tournament/leauge baseball pitching wins.
National League last season: 4 of the top eight in team ERA advanced to the playoffs and of the remaining 4, only the SF was not in the pennant race in the last two weeks. Furthermore, Arizona finished last in hits and runs in the NL, but they had the 4th best team ERA in the league
Ultimately, FN needs to give credit where credit is due. Looking back 50 years its hard to hype a pitcher unless his name is tied to an award. However; Whitey Ford won games as a Yankee. He made the Yankees 12% more likely to win by starting the game.

Who caught the majority of those games Whitey pitched? Who controls the game on the field? That's right the catcher does.
sorry, but if we talk about the best Yankee and one of those Yankees is in discussion for best ever at his position it does apply. It's not like Yogi pulled a Fisk and played for many teams - he played all but 9 games of his 19 seasons (18 full seasons) for the Yankees.
Ford was great, but who was calling the pitches he was throwing? Who knew what pitch would work in each situation? Who played everyday whether it was catcher, LF, RF, 3B or 1B - that's right....Yogi.
It ain't over till Yogi says it is....

And shouldn't the title of this TD be " Greatest All Time Yankee BESIDES Babe, Lou, Joe, or Mickey"? Because you're not really getting the best Yankee then, are you?

If I said Munson or Jackson you'd have a case but Ford is just behind Berra....actually I think Ford is the 2nd or 3rd best SP the Yankees ever had (Red Ruffing and Lefty Gomez).
