This throwdown is about naming the one player that represents each NFL team. Not neccesarily the best player, but pretty much the first player you think of when you think of the franchise, but they should have some household name value. Players only, must be current, no past players

Pats: Brady
Bills: Lee Evans
Jets: Kerry Rhodes
Dolphins: Jason Taylor

Steelers: Big Ben
Browns: Braylon Edwards
Bengals: Chad Johnson
Ravens: Ray Lewis

Colts: Manning
Jaguars: Fred Taylor
Titans: Vince Young
Texans: Mario Williams

Chargers: L.T.
Broncos: Champ Bailey
Chiefs: Tony Gonzalez
Raiders: Jamarcus Russell

Cowboys: Tony Romo
Giants: Eli Manning
Redskins: Clinton Portis
Eagles: McNabb

Packers: Donald Driver
Vikings: A.D.
Lions: Roy Williams
Bears: Urlacher

Bucs: Derrick Brooks
Saints: Drew Brees
Panthers: Julius Peppers
Falcons: Matt Ryan

Seahawks: Matt Hasselbeck
Cardinals: Larry Fitzgerald
49ers: Patrick Willis
Rams: Torry Holt

I'll just list my changes.

Bills: Marshawn Lynch
Raiders: Shane Lechler
Jets: Chad Pennington
Packers: Aaron Kampman

For the Bills...look, Lee Evans was mentioned pretty much not at all last year, except when someone wanted to talk about how he was a FF bust. Marshawn Lynch was considered to be Buffalo's biggest playmaker last year, and while his legal troubles since then haven't helped his image, it has still kept his name fresh in everyone's mind.

Really, JaMarcus Russell? He is only known for being the #1 overall pick, and didn't do anything last year to get his name out there. Shane Lechler has been widely considered the best punter in the league for awhile, on the other hand.

Chad Pennington is far from the best on the Jets, but I still see Rhodes as something of an underrated player, and I don't know about you, but when I think of the Jets, I still think of good ole Noodle Arm.

I think Driver was a good choice for GB, but Kampman has been considered to be an elite DE for a year or two, and I think that transcends Driver's appearance, who hasn't been as good as before in awhile, and I also think loses some of his notice with the departure of Favre, his passer.

I almost put down your picks for the Jets and Bills, but I obviously chose other players, and I will explain below why

For the Bills, Lynch did have a productive rookie season, but it wasn't enough to really put his name on the map. Evans wasn't spectacular last year, but he wasn't terrible, he had an average season, which following up his huge 06 season still has Evans as the Bills most well known player. Bottom line, Lynch's season had very little publicity behind it, the Bills have almost no star power as it is, and another rookie, A.D. completely stole all the attention given to offensive rookies last season

For the Jets, Pennington was nearly my choice, I even thought about Coles, but I decided to put Rhodes. He's been a pro bowler, something Pennington has never been, was an absolute monster his for two seasons, and for my money is the most well known player on the Jets defense. I know this isn't neccesarily about how good a player is, but in the end, I just could not put down a player that was a back up for half of last season as the most well known player or the face of a franchise.

I will argue Oakland and Green Bay in my next argument

Actually, Lynch really did have a productive season. He probably would have been a Pro Bowler had he not missed 3 games. There has also been this ongoing hit-and-run problem, which has kept Lynch on the map for about a month, and making him the biggest news in football in a slow point of the offseason. Evans might have been the "face" a year or two ago, but now it is Lynch.

And as a Bills fan, I agree that the Bills have little star power, although they have good talent in guys like Aaron Schobel and Jason Peters.

As for the Jets...of course Rhodes is the better player, we aren't arguing that. You say Rhodes is the best player on the Jets D? Probably, but what exactly is his competition that isn't a new arrival, David Harris? Revis? Victor Hobson, perhaps? Actually, it's no sure bet that he's the best known. Harris and Revis did make quite a splash last year.

Pennington has become the face through his utter failure as a QB. Not only is he thought of as having a very accurate and incredibly weak throwing arm, but he even has his own well-known nickname..."Noodle Arm"!

You also say you can't use a player who was a backup for most of last season, but you have JaMarcus Russell!

As I have argued our first two differences (Jets, Bills), I will now move on to the Pack and Oakland

For Green Bay, with #4 now gone this was a very tough decision. After Driver I considered Nick Barnett, A.J. Hawk, Al Harris, Charles Woodson, even Ryan Grant, but Driver was the best choice. There are 10-15 more DE's that are more known than Kampman, who, like Kerry Rhodes, is very underrated, and not yet a house hold name by any means. Driver has been in Green Bay for nearly a decade, being Favre's top receiver for years, and right now is unquestionably the most well known player on the Packers offense now that Favre is gone

Now onto the Raiders. For someone to be the face of a franchise, regardless of how good a player is at that respected position and how unknown the rest of the team is, a punter shouldn't even be a candidate for being considered the face of their franchise. Punters are the most anonymous position in football. Fans hate when they come out, and quite frankly don't really pay attention to who the punter is. Fans do know who the #1 overall QB is. If I went to a Raider game, whos jersey would I find being worn by Raiders fans, Jamarcus Russell, or Shane Lechl

Really? Who are those 10-15 better known DEs? I can think of Jason Taylor, Jared Allen, Julius Peppers...maybe Osi and Kerney, but who else? You said it yourself, you didn't even consider Kampman. Kampman was in the top 10 in sacks for a DE this year despite missing a game and was 1st last year. Driver is starting to decline, and has been so overwhelmed by Favre's star power that he has gotten little notice. Kampman is young, and a new riser on the Packers D. He is considered a star, and I think he is certainly more well known than Driver.

A punter shouldn't be considered? Have you seen the Raiders' team? Everyone is either underrated or not good on that team. I would have loved to have taken a guy like Kirk Morrison, but he's way too underrated and unknown. JaMarcus Russell got little attention last year, even when he had his first start of the year (at the end of the year). So what if a punter is generally unnoticed? Lechler is widely considered the best punter in the league, and I dare you to say that the best at ANY position goes unnoticed. I don't see people ignoring guys like Vinatieri and Devin Hester. How is a punter different, especially on a team with little star power?

not that is a big deal but as a Redskins fan i can tell you Cooley is the most beloved player in washington... but for the rest of the league i imagine they see Portis as the face of the skins

July 5, 2008  02:06 PM ET

good TD idea BTW

July 5, 2008  02:36 PM ET

im split with the differences 2-2 waiting on arguements

July 5, 2008  02:38 PM ET

Lions: Mike Martz (last year)

Last year Indianapolis had Peyton Manning, San Diego had LT, we had Martz, our offnesive cordinator who didn't do anything but was always talked about.

I think that Cincinatti's should be Carson Palmer or T.J. Houshmandzedah and Baltimore's should be Ed Reed

July 5, 2008  02:42 PM ET

DS, he asked for players...otherwise, I would have had Al Davis for Oakland.

I agree, however when you think of the bengals Ochos antics come to mind even though Palmer and TJ were more to the team last season

July 5, 2008  02:50 PM ET

The packers dont really have a Face. They have alot of faces.

July 5, 2008  02:52 PM ET

I think that Brett Favre has been the face of the Packers for so long (hell, the NFL), that no one has had time to "develop", I guess.

July 5, 2008  02:53 PM ET

Good TD

July 5, 2008  02:54 PM ET

Farve has been the face of the packers since eve ate the forbidden apple.... actually recent studies now predict and was Brett and Eve... Adam was made because Brett wan't nothing to do with a woman who couldn't listen

July 5, 2008  02:56 PM ET

Yeah vote right. I don't even know who the hell Kerry Rhodes is

EO | 07/05/08, 02:56 PM

then you need to look him up... he is pretty good and not a stretch at all to be on the list

July 5, 2008  02:59 PM ET

Sc, this TD isn't based on who is better, but on who is more well-known...EO kinda proved my point.

July 5, 2008  03:04 PM ET

your right lifer... as i mentioned in my first post about cooley being the most loved player in washington but portis being the better pick for this TDs porposes.... i am not saying that he is wrong for voting for you because of that pick i am just saying he should look into who he is because he is worthy... i imagine people in NY or Jet fans may agree with that pick thats all but pennington is the name that comes to mind when you think of the jets currently

July 5, 2008  03:05 PM ET

purpose... im typing like a tard today for some reason.... prolly because i am a tard

July 5, 2008  03:10 PM ET

Kerry Rhodes? HA! No way is he the face of the franchise. I'm sure there are plenty of people on this site that don't even know who he is.

July 5, 2008  03:14 PM ET

well sad enough to say with chads injuries of late and the fact Vilma is no longer a Jet... who else is there? Maybe Coles

I would say Chad, Coles, Kellen, Rhodes are the most notable players in NY off the top of my head.

July 5, 2008  03:29 PM ET

This is tought...Favre not being the face of the Packers anymore.

July 5, 2008  03:35 PM ET

Wow, IMO LIFER has a far superior list. But even though he is the only one to have argued so far he is still down 4-2.... hmmm....
