He has won the Open 4 years in a row. He is the King of Hard Courts

Nadal has not advanced past the Quarterfinals

He beat Novak Djokivic in straight sets last year

Roddick is injured so he is not much of a factor this year.

He was the king of grass courts too, wasn't he? And Nadal beat Federer on Roger's surface. So I think that he is the leader of one of three people with a very legitimate shot to beat Federer.

First up is clearly Nadal. He has beaten him in two straight grand slam finals. Granted, neither was on hard court, but that is still a big confidence booster. Nadal actually owns Federer in head to head competition. Even if he doesn't catch him in the points by then, Nadal will still probably be number one in the eyes of most people.

Next is Novak Djokovic. He won the Australian Open over Federer. In case you didn't know, that is a hard court. He also dominated Federer in a US Open warm up last year. He has had a great year, even though his Wimbledon ended in disappointment.

Finally, you can never count out Roddick in this major. He always seems to step it up this time of the year, especially over the last couple years, and he of course won it back in 2003. He was having a pretty good year until he got injured, beating the other three mentioned in this td. The injury probably effected him at Wimbledon, but he will be 100% by the time the US Open rolls around.

I meant to delete that King of Hard Courts

Check Head to head with Nadal on hard courts. Its Clearly Federer.
The throwdown is not the #1 ranking, the TD is that Federer will win in the US Open.

Roddick has only beaten Federer 1 time and that was at a small tourney. Federer owns Roddick because he can return that 140mph serve and Andy has no backhand to attack Roger. Go back to 2003 when Roddick won, he beat Ferrero in the final.

Federer will have something to prove after he lost today to Nadal on his surface. He will come out determined and plow through the field and beat Nadal on Sunday in Flushing Meadows in 4 sets.

Federer leads Nadal 3-2 head to head against Nadal. That isn't exactly a big advantage. He had the head to head lead against Nadal on grass too, didn't he? I only mentioned that people would view him as the best player. Where does it seem like I'm trying to argue that he won't be number one? If I was, I wouldn't have mentioned Roddick and Djokovic.

Roddick has beaten him twice. He has beaten him two out of three times, if you count an exhibition match between the two where Roddick slaughtered Federer in two sets. Federer has owned most people. He is having a down year for his standards. Roddick won the last matchup, so why can't he do it again?

Federer had something to prove at Wimbledon after getting embarassed by Nadal in Paris. And he still lost on his own court. Confidence is huge in this sport. And all of the confidence belongs to Nadal. Nadal will be the best player in the world when the US Open rolls around. People thought Federer's advantage on grass was much bigger than his advantage on hard court, so it should be easier for Nadal.

Djokovic is the one guy who has won a hard court grand slam this year, so he might just come in as the favorite.

Anyway, TradeAngelos makes a point. But again, its not like Nadal is even the biggest threat to Federer at the US Open. That distinction probably goes to Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic didn't just beat him in the Australian Open this season, he dominated him. He beat him in straight sets. Not many people can do that. Other than Nadal, that is. Nadal may not be the best hard court player, but he has still done better than most over his career against Nadal.

Djokovic has won the only hard court Grand Slam this season. That means a lot more than Federer winning it the last four years. If Federer has won Wimbledon, then he probably would be the favorite to win the US Open. But when he can't win on his surface against a guy that he is supposed to beat on that surface, it doesn't bode well for him.

You want to count the exhibition against Sampras. How about when he beat Federer? Off the top of my head, I want to say that it was back in November. But it was probably even more recent than that.

And again, you can never count off Roddick. This is his country, and he always seems to step it up.

Federer is being passed by Nadal, and the US Open might put Djokovic above him too.

Nadal is a much better player on grass then he is on hardcourts. He got destroyed at the Aussie earlier this year and has advanced past the quarters only one time in his career. The hard courts are much more taxing on his body and Nadal doesn't have the lethal topspin that he has on other surfaces. He also has a very grueling schedule playing in Stuttgart and the Olympics back to back. All of those factors will make it much more difficult for Nadal to continue his great success.

Nadal Already won.

I hit submit by accident before typing to go to the box. HERE IS MY ARGUMENT. Federer is 15-2 vs Andy. If you want to count exhibitions than count the one where Sampras a few weeks ago beat Roddick. Roddick's seed may make him have to play Novak Djokovic or Rafa before Federer so he will probably not even face Roger

Hard courts will where Rafa's legs out quicker with the harder surface and ball going faster leading to more running. He wont be able to skid like the does on clay and grass.

Novak has a chance but Federer still has the Head to head advantage on hard courts 4-2. If Novak is the 3 seed, he will have to face Nadal in the semis and he will probably lose.

Federer will have the easiest draw, has the experience and is the best hard court player in the world. FEDERER WINS.

Better arguments by Big D

Nadal is the best player in the game, but he has proven NOTHING on hard courts. Djokovic will be Federer's biggest opposition at the U.S. Open. And Andy Roddick will not beat Federer, he played his **** off at last years open and lost 7-6 7-6 6-3. I know Federer isn't the same dominant force he was, but trust me, Roddick isn't beating him.

July 7, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Federer had a full blown case of Mono when he made it to the Semis in Sydney!!! Only since the French has he shown signs of recovering from it, and most people who have had it know that it takes almost a year to fully recover.

Nadal is better than Federer, but Federer is better than everyone else on all courts, something Nadal cannot say.

Nadal will break down during the summer Hard Court season stretch due mainly to his grueling style of play and the lack of advantage he sees on the Hard Courts.

Federer is definitely the favorite in August, whether or not he can defend his points from last season.

July 7, 2008  11:55 AM ET

Federer ha also won Wimbledon 5 years in row too but he was beaten by Nadal. One thing this year has proven is that players are not afraid to take it to Roger. He will have some more crying to do because he will not win the US Open. And I say this because if you look at the results of the Aussie Open expect to see guys come out swinging again.

And Roddick will never be a factor again.
