Name your team first then we'll debate in the second and third arguments
Batting Order
1. Honus Wagner - SS
2. Rogers Hornsby - 2B
3. Ted Williams - LF
4. Babe Ruth - DH
5. Lou Gehrig - 1B
6. Willie Mays - CF
7. Hank Aaron - RF
8. Mike Schmidt - 3B
9. Johnny Bench - C
SP - Bob Gibson
Cowboys-Celtics-Chisox said 07/07, 04:47 AM
Replace Schmidt with Brett. Bench with Berra. Gibson with Cy Young. And since you said DH, without naming one, I'll take Frank Thomas.
Screw your "rule" about no arguments in the first. That's what this is ...arguments.
Schmidt was a slugger. Brett was a hitter. With a .267 career BA how on earth could you choose Mike as your 3B? All time?
Bench? Come on.
BA:
.267
.285
RBI:
1376
1430
Runs scored:
1091
1175
There's more if you insist. Oh, the top number in each category is Bench. They had a VERY close number of career AB's so the numbers are accurate.
Bob Gibson was an AWESOME pitcher. Unbelievable. Cy Young had the award named after him for a reason, though...
ERA
Gibson - 2.91
Young - 2.63
WHIP
Gibson - 1.188
Young - 1.130
At DH, there is none better than future HOFer Frank Thomas.
.302 career hitter with some 520 HR's and a .420 OBP virtually any player would trade their numbers for those of the Big Hurt.
The Pitt Panther loves RUBIO! said 07/07, 10:20 AM
I did name a DH, Babe Ruth.
I chose Mike Schmidt because he is a better hit, and a much better fielder.
George Brett's 162 game average: .305, 19 HR, 95 RBI, 12 SB, .369 OBP, .487 SLG.
Mike Schmidt's 162 game average: .267, 37, 107 RBI, 12 SB, .380 OBP, .527 SLG
Also, George Brett had 1 gold glove. Mike Schmidt had 10.
Same thing goes for Bench Berra. My line-up is so great already, so for the 9 spot I went with slightly less offensively for the best defensive catcher who ever lived. 10 Gold Gloves for Mr. Bench as well.
You can't compare Bob Gibson and Cy Young's numbers they pitched 50 years apart.
I did pick a DH, George Herman Ruth. I'm not gonna even give you the numbers. Let's just say you're wrong. Don't argue over whether or not the Bambino could DH. I started this TD and when you saw Babe as my DH, that should have sent a message that anyone can DH. I guess you didn't get it.
Also thanks for making a LINE-UP.

"All-Time Baseball Line-up, with DH"
There was no DH when Ruth played so how can he be an all-time DH? You may as well have put him at catcher or 3B. DH is a position, one that didn't exist when Ruth played. Though I probably should have replaced AAron with Ruth, still can't go wrong with Hammerin' Hank in right. I stand by my assessment that Frank Thomas was the greatest DESIGNATED HITTER ever.
I didn't need to make a LINE-UP because I agreed with the rest of your choices and was just slotting my changes.
Considering the Gold Glove award didn't make it's debut until late in Berra's career, it's a moot point to argue. I'll take Yogi's 3 MVP awards, 15 consecutive A.S. game appearances, and 10 W.S. rings, thanks. He'll also keep the dugout lively.
If you can't compare Gibson and Young's numbers, then how pray tell do you compare them?
Schmidt was a slugger. One of the best of his generation. Brett was a pure hitter. Just depends on what you value more. If it's defense at 3B you want, you should have gone with Brooks Robinson, a FAR better defensive 3B than either. Not to mention that the GG is the most over rated award in baseball.

You're wrong. I'm right. I win
Cowboys-Celtics-Chisox said 07/08, 04:23 AM
I'm down by 7 and two of your three arguments consist of a list and a claim that you are right and I'm wrong. And people wonder why I don't TD much anymore.
To recap...Ruth can't be a DH because there WAS NO DH in his time. He's either an OF or a Pitcher. He's no more a DH than he is a catcher
Frank Thomas is the best DH that ever was. If you brought Babe Ruth back to life, you'd have to explain to him what a DH IS. That being a FACT how can you possibly put him in that position? It was an attempt to get Aaron AND Ruth onto your team. Should have put Hank at DH. He actually WAS one his last two years
You said we can't compare Cy Young and Bob Gibson based on stats, yet you never give a way we CAN compare them. If stats don't matter in baseball, then what DOES? Baseball is easily the most stat driven sport ever conceived
Yogi has better stats than Bench. Has more MVP's. Has more rings. Bench has more GG's BUT that award was invented when Berra was like 32 years old and on the downside of his career. How exactly does that overcome Yogi's accomplishments?
Brett/Schmidt is probably a push but I wanted as many differences as possible. With that lineup another slugger isn't needed.

Kinda hard to put the Babe as a DH when he was long since DEAD before that rule ever came into effect, don't ya think?
