I've been saying it elsewhere for some time, so I'd better back it up now.

The best coaching hire in 2008 happened in a little town called Dallas, Texas. Maybe you're heard of it, gonets.

Southern Methodist University Football, perennial doormat of Conference USA and generally woeful program took a big step in the right direction back in January by bringing in June Jones.

There are a number of reasons why this was a great decision for both parties. But first, let's be clear- a "great hire" must be great in both directions. And this one is.

Jones is among the most underrated coaches in college football, but his work in turning around a floudering Hawai'i program has not gone unrewarded. He now gets a chance to rebuild a program that wants to:

1. Revamp their organization to return to prominence
2. SPEND MONEY to get there

Jones finally gets what he was so sorely lacking in Manoa.

SMU gets a coach who spear-headed the biggest turnaround in NCAA D-1A history, and who can fix a broken recruiting system.

It's easy to forget that SMU was once a storied football school with elite alumni. Jones should go a long way toward helping folks remember.

Good luck.

Very good choice, Porky, and yes, the buzz here in Dallas is great for june Jones. However, I must take the man who, as a Rutgers fan, I sorely despised, until he left, that is: Rich Rodriguez.

There is debate as to whether he spurned WVU or they spurned him, but regardless, he is a very smart coach that brings a very effective spread fofense to the table to introduce to Michigan.

Michigan needed this change after being embarrassed by Appy State and Oregon in the Big House back-to-back weeks, but also their inept ability to take the Big 10 conference yet again from OSU is what propelled this coaching change into action.

Rich Rod has the ability to make something out of nothing as he took a terrible WVU team and propelled them to stardom by drafting the likes of Noel Devine, Pat White, and Steve Slaton, causing dominance in the once floundering Big East not seen since the days of Miami, BC, and VT.

His ability to install the spread offense in a conference that is largely unfamiliar with it could give Michigan the edge in that conference. With PSU's coaching situation not sorted out, and the OSU inexperience with tons of froshes in the lineup, UM is sitting pretty.

Sitting pretty?

Ohio State
Wisconsin
Penn State
Illinois

Those guys might beg to differ.

RR may be a good LONG-TERM hire but UM won't be feeling the benefits immediately. There's a lot of work to be done before this one canbe labeled a success.

He has to install an entirely new offense at a top-level program, do you know how tough that transition is going to be? Lloyd Carr sure as heck didn't recruit guys with the spread in mind, so RR has his work cut out for him.

Plus, his arrival brought with it quite a bit of baggage- legal and emotional. That's exactly the type of thing that draws focus away from football and exactly what UM doesn't need.

Meanwhile, Jones has PROVEN his ability to quickly turn a program around. His unique recruiting style will get SMU back on track in the short-term. He's also in a much weaker conference.

-By the way, Paterno is still PSU's HC until he decides to leave. That seems pretty sorted out to me.

-OSU is inexperienced? They have 18 returning starters and are among the favorites for a BCS berth. ZERO starting freshmen, only THREE fr. backups. I'm not sure where you're getting your info, but they're set.

Rich Rod will NOT have a problem installing his spread offensive shceme at Michigan, whether he has recruited guys familiar with that scheme or not. Let's look at his past: he started coaching in 2000, replacing retired coach Don Nehlen. He installed his spread offense and in ONE YEAR, he had the team turned around form 3-8 to 9-4, a 6 game swing. They have been winning ever since. Michgan last year went 9-4, and that was after starting 0-2, and NOT using the spread, and having to face OSU. They came within a game of being the de facto Big 10 champs. With his spread offense, they could finally WIN the Big 10. So RR will not have trouble installing his spread offense like you think.

So RR has also PROVEN his ability to quickly turn a program around. The difference with Jones is Hawaii still isnt national championship material and West Virginia was (I doubt they are anymore). So we see the difference in the level of coaching. RR can turn a team around and make them a contender on the national level, Jones can only do it on a conference level, and doing that at SMU will be more of the same.

Jones wont SNIFF the title game. RR and Michigan are in great position to.

Whoa. In his 1st season at WVU, RR went 3-8. It was in his 2nd year that he was 9-4.

WVU WASN'T JUNK when he inherited it. Nehlen won more than 60% of his games over 21 years, and led the school to 13 bowls. In fact, the YEAR BEFORE RR took over WVU went to a bowl AND WON.

So...from a bowl victory to 3-8? That's not such a turnaround.
That's what he's going to do for UM?

This isn't about getting to the title, its about the BETTER HIRE. SMU hired Jones because he fixed a Hawai'i program that had:

-gone 5-31 over 3 years
-was WINLESS in 1998
-had lost 18 STRAIGHT

His 1st year was 9-4 and a WAC Title. His .647 winning % is BEST in UH HISTORY.

Jones had little to work with at UH- poor facilities, tiny budget, no recruiting pool. He CHANGED the system, recruited kids that no one wanted and built that program from NOTHING to a WAC school in the BCS!

SMU has to recruit in the shark tank that is Texas. They need EXACTLY what Jones brings

- a unique talent to FIND and RECRUIT talent despite the competition
- an ability to revive a dying program

SMU is willing to spend. They built 1st class facilities and gave Jones what he needs to succeed.

Ok, if this is about a BETTER HIRE, doesnt a winning resume count? I would think it would. And yes, both have a winning resume, but RR has always had good recruiting classes as well: Pat White, Steve Slaton, Noel Devine, Darius Reynaud, Jarrett Brown...all cogs in the spread offense. So guess what RichRod brings to the table?

"- a unique talent to FIND and RECRUIT talent despite the competition
- an ability to revive a dying program"

Exactly the same. Now Michigan isnt a "dying" program, but a fledgling one, thats for sure, and with the great recruiting that RR has had over the years, the same will be expected for Michigan and in no time at all he will have that team turned around, so to speak, and contending for a national championship.

And believe me, turning around a team in the WAC is nothing to write home about. The entire conference stunk when Jones took control of Hawaii, and has NEVER enjoyed BCS status until Boise State, the FIRST of the WAC schools to do it since Jones was in Hawaii. So that undercuts Jones's accomplishments somewhat at Hawaii.

Michigan had the better hire in Rodriguez: a winning attitude and the opportunity to restore Michigan to glory.

Ouch..dissing the WAC. He took Hawai'i to a BCS berth. Wherever you come from, that works for me.

Good job, GN.

July 9, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Better arguments to the left.

July 9, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Great arguments and a tough choice. I see the sense for both these hires. Jones certainly has more work cut out for him, however he has shown that he can do it. On the other hand, RR will have LOFTY expectations and one onders it he will miss being the local hero in WVU once the U of M alumni get a little nervous.

I am still thinking

Damn.......I'm a diehard Michigan fan, but we are going to be in the "rebuilding" stage for a few years before Rich has everyone in Michigan falling in love with him. Yes it was a great pick up for UM to get him, but June is going to have SMU kickin' A this year........<---------------------

July 9, 2008  10:29 AM ET

I really like Porkins point about Jones turning around teams... hopefully he can do that with SMU

July 9, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Your arguments have really improved in the time you've been on this site, gonets. But you just can't slip anything by Porkins. He undercut a great deal of your argument when he pointed out that Rodriguez went from a bowl team to 3-8 when he took over. You argued that Rodriguez was better for the long term after that, but you spent a lot of space arguing that it would be great for 2008 prior to Porkins pointing that out.

SMU will go 7-5, Michigan will go 11-1.

July 9, 2008  10:41 AM ET

Michigan 11-1????? Are you joking!?!?!?! I hope we do go 11-1......we might have a shot at the championship if we do.

July 9, 2008  10:41 AM ET

I want whatever it is that your smokin' gonets, cause it must be some good ****.......

July 9, 2008  10:44 AM ET

I've never been much of a June Jones fan, but Porkins now has me believing he's the next Bear Bryant. Very convincing work.
