More Impressive Feat

The Williams sisters at Wimbleton

or

The Manning Brothers going back to back

My pick is the Williams sisters-

Look at the Record

This is Venus's second straight title and her third in four years- 5 overall
Serena Has two herself

Even more this decade only ONE final (2006) has not had a Sister in the final matchup .

They also have earned 3 doubles titles- Tying them with Cara Black/
Liezel Huber duo for most this decade

Considering that the Manning Brothers have never faced off once in a Superbowl- much less 3 times- the Williams Sisters is the MUCH more impressive feat.

The Williams sisters have met 3 times in the Final. 2 of those times the match was decided in straight sets. Some exciting tennis, huh?

The Manning brothers, however, won in back-to-back years and, most recently, Eli led his team to the defeat of the (at the time) undefeated New England Patriots. Peyton led his team to 29 points against one of the league's best defenses.

For the sisters, this year featured a flurry of upsets to the top four seeds, which ultimately cleared the way for them. Had that not happened, they wouldn't have won.

I would liken it to the top 4 seeds in a March Madness region going down. Obviously some lower seeds are going to make it pretty far then, right? Same deal with the Williams sisters. Even better for them is that neither had to play one of those top four seeds.

The Williams sisters defeated a combined TEN opponents seeded outside the top 25. That means that they only had to beat FOUR opponents between the 2 of them that were in their league so to speak. Pretty easy road.

Eli and Peyton combine for 16 years experience in the NFL. Serena and Venus combine for 29 years of experience as professionals. It's too early to compare just numbers.

Ah Little off there

2007 Serena 5 Venus 7
2006 Serena Not top 25 Venus 6
2005 Serena 4 Venus 14
2004 Serena 1 Venus 3
2003 Serena 1 Venus 4
2002 Serena 2 Venus 1
2001 Serena 6 Venus 2
2000 Serena 9 Venus 7

and what was the Giants seed last year?

Oh ok- just so we are clear there-

SO what about 2002? The sisters were ranked 1 and 2 and made it to the finals

and lets also keep in mind that the WTA is even HARDER to explain than the NFL passer rating AND the BCS put toghter in sanskrit

Venus WON the Big tourney- and her ranking remained the same- Serena LOST and picked up 2 spots after losing to a lower ranked opponent!

but still - they beat who they had to play- you going to discount the Colts Title year as they played the Bears? I mean SOMEONE had to knock off the San Diego Chargers - who were the number one overall seed in the whole thing.

Thats the thing about one and done playoffs- upsets happen

and as far as years are concerned- nice to count Venus at the age of 14- she did not turn pro full time until 1997 - she only played 9 tourneys her first 3 years

PLus they have to win 6 straight- in 13 days no rest , no trips to Mexico

What are you talking about? I never said anything about what the Williams sisters were seeded. I was talking about their opponents. You're the one that's a little off.

I agree the rankings in tennis are confusing as hell, but rankings are rankings. Someone had to beat someone and I understand that. However, the #1 seed can have an off day and lose to someone not all that good. For the Williams sisters, don't you agree they would have had some more trouble had Sharapova and company not been out of it? I'm not discounting the win; I'm just pointing out a fact.

Regarding Venus, she turned pro. End of story. That's like discounting a rookie's first few years in the NFL because he was a backup. You can't do that.

6 straight in 13 days with no rest? I'm pretty sure those days on which she didn't compete would be considered rest days.

Next is the fact that SB wins are harder to come by. You can be a great player and never win a SB because your team wasn't all that great. However, in tennis, practically every good tennis player wins one eventually, sometimes even multple times. Not every good QB wins one.

The Mannings winning back-to-back is more impressive and harder to do

"Next is the fact that SB wins are harder to come by"

Really?

Are there 2 Wimbletons a year or something?

Nope 1 SuperBowl and 1 Wimbleton

Oh there must be more Competition right?

Nope There are HUNDREDS of women pro players world wide

So there is more rounds in the NFL?

Nope- at WORST the NFL is WC,DIV,Champ, SB
Tennis is 6 rounds- and no bye weeks

More demanding? The Giants O were on the feild for 30:27 and Eli played 57 plays

Venus & Serena played For one hour and eleven minutes - after beating 5 other top 40 players the past 12 days

and they didn;t get an hour to watch Bob Dylan and Elton John halfway through either.

"Next is the fact that SB wins are harder to come by. You can be a great player and never win a SB because your team wasn't all that great. However, in tennis, practically every good tennis player wins one eventually, sometimes even multple times. Not every good QB wins one."

Really?

Tim Henman: won 11 career ATP titles, and been ranked number 4 in the world,

Tony Trabert: Ranked the 21st best player ever by Jack Kramer

Pam Shriver: 1 of SIX women to have over 100 tour wins - Former NUMBER ONE ranked player

The whole first part of your argument was dumb. You took one line out of what I said and ignored my actual argument for it.

I'll quote myself next: "However, in tennis, PRACTICALLY every good tennis player..."

There are a lot more good QBs that never won a SB but not so many good tennis players that never won Wimbledon.

Tim Henman- good player that was DQed from Wimbledon one year for hitting a ball girl in the head with a ball on purpose. He also made it to the semis 3 times, yet lose twice to Pete Sampras and another to #1 Lleyton Hewitt. He wasn't getting upset by any means.

Tony Trabert- What are you talking about with this one? He's a great player who WON Wimbledon in 1955. Do your research.

Pam Shriver- Pam won a lot of events, yet they were ALL little events that not many top players entered, which explains the fact that she NEVER won a major and only made it to the finals of a major ONCE.

Now I will list to you some great quarterbacks who never won a SB. It's a far better list than your two athletes.

Dan Marino
Warren Moon
Jim Kelly
Dan Fouts
Fran Tarkenton
Boomer Esiason
Dave Krieg

The list goes on. The Mannings are more impressive.

There's been more than one final w/o a Williams sister. Did you mean year?

July 7, 2008  11:11 AM ET

overall feat. No single year.

This decade only 2006 did not have either Venus or Serena in the Final match-

interseting topic. very nice idea. personally I say the Manning Brothers, cause think about it, how many good Qbs never won a SB? Marino, Fouts, McNabb, the list can go on and on. However if you think about how often African American woman have won championships in tennis, is does increase their feat. Interseting I will wait for more argumetns.

Super Bowls are harder to come by than Wimbledon championships, in my opinion.

Really? they have more than 1 per year?

July 7, 2008  01:09 PM ET

No, but I'll explain why in my next argument.

July 8, 2008  09:28 AM ET

David, I assume you'll be sending this out, correct?

July 8, 2008  09:32 AM ET

This was close....tough to vote....I'm going to have to read the arguments several times before I can vote.

July 8, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Actually I could have listed a LOT more- But space limitations do have a place here.

July 8, 2008  09:42 AM ET

The arguments are really close here so I'll have to go with my own opinion (I read the arguments over a dozen times and I can't decide)....to me being sisters and that dominant in one sport is more impressive than Eli going on a great run once in his career.....

July 8, 2008  09:44 AM ET

Dave Krieg is a great QB? That was enough as well to make me vote for NC. Sometimes it can be one comment like that when it is 2 great TDers going at each other, that can sway a vote.

July 8, 2008  10:18 AM ET

G.O.A.T. has better arguments. Vote left.

July 8, 2008  10:20 AM ET

i find it more impressive to win a SB than a wimbleton... this is why to me anyway,

in football you have 11 players on the field at a time. one players weakness is everyones weakness. It is much easy to be exploited when your margin of error is greater.

However this TD is more about the Mannings Rather then the entire team (which is still impressive) and the Williams sisters at "this" wimbleton (i am asusming). So its really tough vote for me....THE MADNESS

July 8, 2008  10:21 AM ET

I am actually leaning towards GOAT. Even though Dave Kreig is king of a gaffe, the TD Pimp misunderstood the rankings point GOAT was making and caught a few things in NC's arguments that were a little thin (the "no rest, " Tony Trabert).

July 8, 2008  10:22 AM ET

In tennis, an athlete must be able to do everything necessary to win. In football, yes, the Mannings are impressive... but they have one task out of twenty-two. I've just GOT TO go left on this one... and I agree with Rich -- that DAVE KREIG (?!) mention was pure absurdity, plain & simple...

July 8, 2008  10:23 AM ET

Honestly, it appeared to me that it was the Giants' defense which carried Manning... he is certainly nowhere near the class of his brother. Perhaps we should be praising Tom Coughlin and Tony Dungy here, not the Manning brothers... but in tennis, one cannot depend on anyone but his or herself...

July 8, 2008  11:06 AM ET

rstowe - The NMI Emperor JL | 07/08/08, 09:44 AM

What about the fact that he listed a player that actually WON Wimbledon as not winning Wimbledon? At least Krieg never won a SB.

Bigalke, having to depend solely on his or herself is what makes the Williams sisters' feat less impressive. Peyton and Eli had to rely on teammates. If they screwed up, then they just had to go with it.

What's with all the hating on Dave Krieg? He threw for over 3600 yards and 32 touchdowns in 1984 and is 11th all time in passing yards. He's tenth in touchdowns and was an ironman in the NFL.

July 8, 2008  11:19 AM ET

Scpalo - takes you to 5th base |

Actually its the DECADE that the Williams have had

5 titles in 9 years for Venus and Serena has 2 -

only ONCE has there been a Wimbleton final without one or the other,

July 8, 2008  11:20 AM ET

Dave, I'm pretty sure you mentioned that in the arguments. Let the guy decide for himself. haha. Scpalo, just think of Tony Trabert, seeding, and "no rest".
