Kitna may be the best QB in the NFC North
lakers#1 | 07/07/08, 02:19 PM
We decided that we would TD on it.
Kitna is definitely not the best QB in NFC North, in a divsion full of mediocre quarterbacks. I would have to pick . . . Tavaris Jackson.
Let me have my say on this. The Minnesota Vikings were 8-4 when Tavaris Jackson played in games. The Vikings were 0-4 when Jackson did not play, obviously he meant a lot to his team.
His completion percentage of around 58% isn't bad either considering that he didn't have many great recievers to pass to during his whole career. With Bernard Berrian, Jackson's stats will improve.
Why isn't Kitna the best QB in the NFC North? A QB is the leader of the team and Kitna hasn't been able to lead the Lions to many victories, despite a great recieving corp with Roy Williams, Shaun MCDonald, Calvin Johnson and Mike Furrey.
He holds onto the ball too long and got sacked 51 times last year. His interceptions outnumber his touchdowns and the only reason he got 4,000 yards for multiple years was because he was under pass happy Mike Martz. With Martz gone, the Lions w

Lets compare the stats between these two players.
Kitna 63.3 Cmp % 18 TD 20 INT 4068 Yards Sacked 51 times
Jackson 58.2 Cmp % 9 TD 12 INT 1911 Yards Sacked 19 Times
Kitna has a higher Cmp %, more TDs and twice as many yards, while being sacked 32 more times than Kitna. Jackson has a much better O-line than Kitna and a better running game behind him. Not to mention a great defense.
Kitna led the Lions to a 6-2 start last season and they just collapsed at the end of the season. The Vikings won 8 games last year, but it wasn't because of Tavaris Jackson. The Vikings won those games on Peterson's legs and their defense. The four loses without Jackson the Vikings lost twice to Green Bay, and once to Kansas City and Philadelphia. Those would have been tough games to win with him in there.
Jackson only had two games last year with a multi TD pass game, and only games throwing over 200 yards. Kitna had 6 games with Multi TDs, and 13 games throwing over 200 yards. Kitna's stats show that he is the best QB in the NFC North.
Detroit Steel said 07/09, 03:11 PM
Last year, the Detrioit Lions passed about 75% of the time last year. That is the only reason why KItna has more yards and more touchdowns. Plus, another reason is that the best reciever that Jackson had to throw to last year was Bobby Wade. Here is a comparison of last year's recieving corps between Minnesota and Detroit.
Detroit:
Shaun McDonald
Roy Williams
Calvin Johnson
Mike Furrey
Sean McHugh
Minnesota:
Bobby Wade
Sidney Rice
Robert Ferguson
Visanthe Shiancoe
Troy Williamson
It is obvious that Detroit's above average recievers helped pad Kitna's stats.
Detroit actually did have a good running game last year to help Kitna out, when used. T.J. Duckett had three touchdowns, over 300 yards and a 5.2 YPC average. Kevin Jones rushed for 581 yards in limited time. Tatum Bell had a YPC average over 4.
Green Bay would have been a tough team to beat but with Jackson in the game, KC and Philadelphia would have been wins.
If Jackson had an offensive cordinator like Mike Martz that passed all of the time, Jackson could have had close to 3,000 yards. With good recievers there could have been a chance he could get around 3,200. Jackson is better.
lakers#1 says ROLL TIDE! said 07/09, 03:22 PM
From what you said in the last part of your argument just helped my argument. You said that with Mike Martz as the OC and good recievers he could get aroudn 3,200 yards and that Jackson was better. That's funny because with Martz and good Wide-outs Kitna threw for over 4000 yards. So based on that how is Jackson better?
The Lions had a decent running game, but no where near the Vikings level. The Lions didn't have a 1000 yard rusher. The Vikings did, and Taylor was just 167 yards away from being one.
I know that Kitna has better recievers to throw to, but that doesn't mean that Jackson is better just because he doesn't have great recievers. Only last year did Tom Brady have good recievers around him, but in the previous years he still threw for 3000 and 4000 yards. Donovan McNabb hasn't had great recievers very often either and when he has played between 14-16 games he has thrown for over 3000 yards. With great recievers I don't think that Jackson will be a good QB. Im a Vikings fan and I would love to see Jackson being succesfull, but I don't think that it will happen.
Detroit Steel said 07/09, 08:20 PM
I think you miss-understood me.
I said that with Martz, Jackson could have thrown for 3,000 yards. With good recievers, Jackson could have thrown for around 3,200. With both Mike Martz and good recievers, Jackson could have thrown close to 4,000 yards. Kitna had two advantages that Jackson didn't.
As crazy as this may seem, Detroit may actually have a Top 5 recieving corp in the league with a decent quarterback. Not with Minnesota, even with Bernard Berrian, Minnesota has a Bottom 5 recieving corp in the league, maybe Top 20 with a great quarterback.
The Lions didn't run much so they didn't have a 1,000 yard rusher but defenses were usually ready for Jones, Duckett or Bell to take the rock.
Donovan McNabb and Tom Brady are both perenial Pro Bowl candidates - I'm not comparing Jackson or Kitna to either of them. But it is weird that Kitna can't lead a team with good recievers to a winning record. Their run defense was really good last year and their total defense was solid so you can't blame it on them. Jackson had a good defense but he also didn't have any recievers to pass to so 2,000 yards without Mike Martz is really good.
Here is an interesting stat, if Jackson had as many attempts as Kitna, he would have had about 4,000 yards with 18 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. Add Johnson, Williams, McDonald and Furrey to Minnesota???s receivers and Jackson could have gone beyond 4,000 and his interceptions would have been lower and he could have had around 25 touchdowns. Kitna didn???t have these stats . . .
lakers#1 says ROLL TIDE! said 07/09, 09:19 PM
I don't ever see Jackson throwing for 4000 yards. Not with good receivers or Martz.
You can't really say with the same amount of stats what numbers Jackson would have put up. He wouldn't end up with all that. For one thing the Vikings would be stupid and Brad Childress wouldn't have a job very long if he let Jackson throw as much as Kitna does. The Lions have faith in Kitna to do a good enough job. The Vikings do not have faith in Jackson.
I believe that Kitna this season has a pretty good chance of getting the Lions a winning record. They were 7-9 last season, and started 6-2. If they can play like they did the first 8 weeks, then they will finish with a winning record next season.
All your arguments for Jackson are just what he could've done. That is what shows he isn't the best QB in the NFC North. He hasn't done it, Kitna has. Kitna is the only proven QB in the NFC North. You know most of the time what your going to get out of Kitna. With Jackson the Vikings are just hoping he does just good enough for them to win. And hoping he doesn't cost them the game. The Lions put there games on Kitna's shoulders, and the Vikings do not put it on Jackson. Kitna is better.

It cut off my last sentence, here it is:
With Martz gone, the Lions will try to pass half of the time and run half of the time. This way, Kitna will have trouble getting over 3,000 yards, let alone 4,000.

Two of the games he missed were against Green Bay. Besides, the backup was a Kelly Holcomb/Brooks Bollinger combo of awfulness. Holcomb retired after last season, while Bollinger is arguably the #4 QB on the Vikes roster behind Jackson, Frerotte and Booty.

Ir looks like you're gonna lose this one Detroit. It's a shame becasuse I'm a believer in Tarvaris Jackson. I think Childress can do for him what he did for McNabb.

This should be a draw because it's similar to a trick question.

there are no good QBs in the NFC North, but Kitna does have the most yards, TDs, etc with the worst O-line.

Anyway, based on arguments, I have to give it to Detroit Steel. She is exactly right though, Jackson will be MUCH BETTER this year. I am actually sick of defending him, you can check out my Vikings blog or something if you want to see it. I don't really care.
