More Irrelevant: WNBA or AFL?

I'm taking the WNBA, however, it's close. I can't think of ONE player in the AFL, but I do know Swoops for the WNBA. I can't think of a team name (nor do I care to) from the WNBA, but do know the Dallas Desperados of the AFL. Both aren't intriguing, but I'll explain a little later why the AFL has the slight margin.

The one thing that separates the two is Kurt Warner. Didn't he play for the Barnstormers? Make that two teams I can name. Here is where the AFL becomes "relevant"; it's possible for a player to cross over to the NFL. I'm sure there are more out there who have, but I don't know their names.

A WNBA player can't crossover to the NBA and the only people the game is relevant to are ESPN and ABC for politically correct reasons. Women are just as good as men. Women deserve the right to compete in sports. l personally like the commercial and I try to tune it out, so I'm sure I will botch the wording, but they have a WNBA player with a Chilie from TLC vibe asking us to tell her it doesn't matter. Give me your phone number and I'll call and tell you.

If I wanted to watch sub-par bball, I'd watch the Harlem Globetrotters play that green team from Washington.

So in your first paragraph you're basically saying both sports are so obscure that you really can't point out much about either. Ok then...well..

You bring up Kurt Warner as the entity that separates these two? Well thats a bit unfair. He's a dude. If you want to talk about relevance, what about Lisa Leslie going for her FOURTH GOLD in Beijing? Or 2 time Olympic gold medalist Katie Smith going for a THIRD? That wouldn't be fair to Warner, because there isn't football.

Politically correct reasons? Thats the motivation? Hm, I'm not so sure. The WNBA had a record 14 sell-outs in May. Overall attendance for May was up 42% this year. Viewership & Ratings on ESPN2 are up 45% and 44% respectively. Compared to May of 2007, the WNBA's web site experienced a 100% increase in site viewership. On the rise, much?

In May, Kobe Bryant's player page was hit most by web (NBA/WNBA) visitors. Who was 2nd? Candace Parker. Funny, she doesn't play in the NBA.

What does that all mean? The league is not just surviving, but growing. Its relevance is real to the media and viewers.

I'm not sure what you wrote at the end of paragraph 3. It lost me. More on the AFL in the next argument.

I'm glad you are privy to the WNBA and can name names. That is commendable. I would not and choose not to because it would be to me what the Ark of the Covenant was in Raiders of the Lost Ark to the ****..my face would melt.

From a standpoint of having to watch either, let me say this. If someone offered me box seats to an AFL game in Denver I would go. Yes, the field is only 50 yards long, yes a receiver can move in forward motion before the snap, yes the score will be 58-57 by halftime, but it looks and feels like football. Especially after a few cocktails. In a nutshell, it would be a good reason to party.

At a WNBA game, if I got drunk and roudy, it would be like the scene in the World According to Garp where the chick with the speech impedement recognizes Garp at a feminist convention even though he's in drag and yells "AAP, AAP!!" Not my kind of crowd. Women are important, yes. I just don't need nationalized media forcing an irrelevant league down my throat. Save it for the Olympics or go play a pick up game at the Y.

Do they have Tampax night at the stadiums? Ellen Degeneres bobble head night? Please, tell me.

I can name the names of multiple gold-medal winning Olympians. These women, who are successful WNBA stars, are showcasing their talent on the world stage and making the United States the dominant power in women's basketball.

This throwdown is falling into an abyss now. There are ways to be funny. Lord knows I have done my share of throwdowns that are more comical in nature than factual. But most of what you're saying isnt really amusing me, and I poke fun at the WNBA often enough.

It doesn't matter if the WNBA is irrelevant to you, nor does it matter if you would accept tickets to an AFL game. My friend's sister went to Tennessee and is in the league, and my area is pretty excited about it. But that doesn't have any influence on anything anywhere else.

ESPN isn't forcing it on anyone. Their ratings are up and their attendance is increasing by amazing percentages. Their merchandise sales are rising. If anything, they force-feed the AFL.

In other news, the Arena Bowl's ratings share dropped every single year since 2003 to embarrassing lows. Relevance can be judged by viewership, sales, and media attention. Just because AFL resembles football doesn't make it 'relevant'.

If the WNBA wanted to make itself relevant, they should put trampolines on the court like in slam ball so at least there would be dunks. WNBA has a smaller ball, the AFL has a golden ball. The WNBA has a closer three point line, the AFL a 50 yard field. The WNBA has finger tip roll layups and 50-38 final scores, the AFL has no defense and 98-91 final scores. But, the AFL has walls on the sidelines so it has the carnage factor.

Bottom line, I don't care about either. But, I do like to party. And, I could get jiggy with it at an AFL game before I would ever watch passes flying out of bounds, airballs from the paint etc...

Both are close, but I think there is a conspiracy with your attendance numbers. I was channel surfing last year during the WNBA's prolific best of 3 playoff series and it looked like a 2pm game in late April of the Nationals vs. Royals.

Nice TD- WNBA Hate vs AFL second class

Jerks. Don't they know you have stuff to do? Geez.

If you just got rid of all those customers you wouldn't have to deal with their whining anymore. It's a flawless plan. You should take it and tell it to your boss and claim that it's your idea.

I'm not a big believer in the WNBA but I don't think you can open up a debate that basically points out that its not the NBA, so the girls lose. I'd be more embarrassed playing little league football.

* My cousin's boyfriend played in the Arena League, so I don't make the little league reference in an ignorant sense. I know its tough to play.

So Cassidy voted against me. No explanation. And just 1 argument for each of us. Ironically, I'm arguing FOR the women in this one. Is that supposed to tell me something?

I agree that the WNBA is most irrelevant, but the sexism from the left is coming on a little too strong. No vote yet
