I much like the rest of us in this time of complete sports slowness have pretty much heard all the drama going on in GB. My argument is this. If I were a Packers fan, a Packers coach, a Packers GM, in this day and age of win now, who gives my team the best chance to make it to the SB? Would it be essentially a rookie (yes I know he played in a few games but he hasn't started so in my mind he's a rook) who is still an unproven commodity, or Brett Farve. The Packers went to the NFC Championship game, they went to overtime in that game, and lost to the would be SB champion Giants by three measley points. Stat wise last season Brett was no chump, he finished 6th overall amongst active QBs. He posted 4155 yards and 28 TDs. The Packers themselves seem to finally have the pieces together to make a run, so what sense does it make to essentially let the biggest one (a proven, vet, dare I say legend) QB walk? It doesn't. Great QBs are few and far between could Aaron be a great, sure however history doesn't bode well for him trying to fill the shoes of a legend. Only a few teams in modern history have made this transistion without myring themselves in medicority. GB should try one more time

Look, this isn't like bringing sexy back. We all agree that THAT was a great move.

But allowing Favre to reverse his decision and rejoin GB wouldn't be the right thing to do and wouldn't be good for the long-term future of the team.

For several years, Brett toyed with retirement, and each time he kept the team dangling as he mulled over his decision. Each time the team waited patiently for its franchise player to agree to put in one more year. They worked around him- did things on his terms.

Finally, he retired. It was a considered move. he didn't do it suddenly or rashly. He decided to walk away. The team HAD to finally move on and begin planning its post-Favre future.

Now Brett may want to undo what he's done? Yes, he's got every right to change his mind, but the team has made its plans. They have updated, moved on to a new chapter.

They've made roster moves and financial moves to set themselves up for future success- those plans would be undermined if they had to undo them for one more year of Favre.

It might reduce their shot at a Superbowl in 2008, but for the long-term health of the franchise, it's time to continue moving forward.

I like that you brought up the future. I like that. Because that's what the NFL is all about right? Setting yourself up for the future. I am glad you cleared that up, because I thought in the parity driven NFL you must win when you can. You must take advantage of the "window" you have set yourself up for.

The NFL is no longer about long term dominance (in most cases) it's about a three to five year period where your team has the right pieces to make that happen.

So the trade off in my mind is this, skip your best chance of going to the SB of going to the SB in a long time, for at least two years to let Farve walk? Why two years? Because Minnesota is setup to take over that division, especially in Rodgers struggles. GB could essentially forfeit their best chance to win a SB, to end up where? Mired right in the middle. The success rate for Qbs taking over for great ones is very low. Heck the only team I can remember doing it with great success was the 9ers hand off from Montana to Young.

I don't love Brett, I just was thinking if I were a Packers fan let's win one in the next five years, and he gives them the best chance to do that.

Ok. Explain to me how exactly the Packers would have a BETTER chance to win in 2008.

Go ahead.

They'd have Brett back, but they couldn't do it with him last year.

The Vikings will be a lot betterm, as you just admitted.
The Cowboys are still just as good if not better.
The Pats are still just as good.
The Colts, Jags, Giants, etc etc...

NONE of those teams are going anywhere.

Green Bay couldn't get it done in 2007. Yet you're sort of implying that if Brett comes back, they'll win.

They'll have a TOUGHER division, and likely face the same playoff team that BEAT them. Favre will be 39 years old.

So how is 2008 better for them than it was in 2007?

Oh, and what's this "win one in the next 5 years" stuff? He'll come back for 5 more years? A 44-year old Favre is going to get you a title? I don't get it.

Look, sometimes you have to do the right thing. The team was forced to move forward without Favre. It was his choice, not theirs. He made his bed.

Green Bay has put things in motion that can't be easily undone. They worked around his changes of heart year after year, but it's time to start the next chapter.

What I never said he should come back for the next five years? I said the best chance the Packers have to win a SB in the next five years is with Brett Farve, you cannot tell me that's not the case. Should we run down a list of QBs who have taken over for greats and failed to do anything more then be on another team two years later?

I get your point, but what's better winning a SB, or being .500 for the next five years. Give me a break and talk to any team that coulda wen tor won, if they only had a great QB.

SB's are few and far between and your on crack if you think Rodgers is gonna come out of the chute and win one. Your also on crack if you think he can even be close to Farve's level. Farve as great as he was one exactly one SB, you think Rodgers is gonna match or exceed that? How about no.

Farve can beat all those teams, and yes they could be the odds on favorite to go back to the NFC game, why? The whole team has more expierence now. If they win home field, not to many teams can go there and beat them.

It's abotu winning a SB and doing it when you can. Planning is great but players want bling.

Brett gives them the best chance.

"your on crack if you think Rodgers is gonna come out of the chute and win one. Your also on crack if you think he can even be close to Farve's level."

Really? I remember a guy. 6th round draft pick who had never started 1 game. He replaced an injured QB who is Top 10 all-time in yards and completions.

He led his team to the playoffs. And he won a superbowl.

The moral? You ASSUME that Rodgers can't do it. But you can't possibly have any idea how good or bad he'll be.

That's story #1.

Here's story #2.

You were in love with a girl You dated her for years, and she was the best thing in your life. She helped you achieve amazing things. But then, it changed. She considered breaking up with you a few times, but held off. Until finally, she dumped you.

You were crushed. Your life was in shambles. But somehow, you moved on.

Now she might want to come back. But you're with a new girl. She may be really great...you aren't sure yet.

If she comes back, it MIGHT be great, but it's a GUARANTEE that she won't stay for long. And in another year, you'll be in shambles AGAIN. She WILL leave again and it'll be for good.

Do you take her back?

mmm...bacon

July 10, 2008  10:43 AM ET

Prodigy - for the love of all things holy, please put your Favre mancrush on the shelf where it belongs....he is retired and needs to stay that way!

July 10, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Favre makes me ill. Selfish SOB.

July 10, 2008  10:56 AM ET

Brett, stay away.

Sincerely,

PackBrew42 - Packer fan.

July 10, 2008  11:03 AM ET

packbrew you say that now, but what about when rogers gets hurt again? or when he just doesnt perform? bottom line is he is still a rookie and you would have to be slightly insane to not want Favre to be the qb for your team.

July 10, 2008  11:12 AM ET

b-dawk, Favre can't play forever and I'd rather see what the Packers have in Rodgers (and maybe Brohm if injury falls upon Rodgers).

Yeah, the Packers could have a terrible year because Rodgers doesn't perform...or we can have a decent or another great year if we find out he can. Maybe we'll find out he's a Qb with a less powerful arm than Favre but a better decision maker and more mobile. There is no predrawn conclusion that Favre can repeat his success of last year and while alot of people will say that Favre is still the best option at Qb, I still believe its time for the organization to move on.

July 10, 2008  11:39 AM ET

The team has to go through the transition at some time and there will be no better time than right now. Rodgers knows the offense, is prepared for the season and is very hungry to get out there and play. Like PackBrew said there is no guarantee Brett has the same year again and no there is also no guarantee that Rodgers will fail or perform. Favre coming back mucks up what the Packers are trying to do for the next 5 to 6 years. This is a very talented and deep team that is ready to be contender for the next several years, they need to know what is going to happen after Favre. What do we do with Matt Flynn if Brett comes back? I don't like wasting any draft picks no matter how late. The time is now to pass the baton. If Rodgers doesn't perform than Brohm will get a chance but its time to make the change.

What I find funny is the past two years I have been saying he should come back and everyone else was saying he is hurting the team. The young team needed is veteran leadership but after two years this young team has become very mature and even has playoff experience.

July 10, 2008  11:42 AM ET

Hehe, I agree bucky...last few years it seems like Packer fans have said Favre should come back and everyone else said he shouldn't....now it seems like alot of Packer fans say Favre shouldn't come back but everyone else says he should.

July 10, 2008  11:56 AM ET

I think the media has totally missed read the Packer Fan base. I live in Denver now but everyone I talk to back home says its time to move on. Packer fans aren't just Brett Favre fans. The people in the stadium especially, they have owned those seats since they played at City Stadium and will love who ever is playing for them. If you go to a game on Sunday you still might see Don Majkowski playing "Every Rose Has its Thorn". They loved that guy and everyone else who played for the team.

July 10, 2008  11:57 AM ET

Don sometimes plays at bars around the stadium. Sorry worded that comment really bad.

July 10, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Favre is a better option than Rodgers BUT

Porkins has the better argument

July 10, 2008  12:15 PM ET

No way

July 10, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Rodgers has PATIETNLY waited for his turn.....And now its his turn. He has kept his mouth shut and his **** out of trouble. He has waited long enough. This is now Rodgers team.

July 10, 2008  12:18 PM ET

But allowing Favre to reverse his decision and rejoin GB wouldn't be the right thing to do and wouldn't be good for the long-term future of the team.

Not necesssarily Porkins. Lets say Favre plays for the Packers next year. After the season Rodgers walks, and Favre retires. The starter is now Brian Brohm. Many people are forgetting that GB could let Rodgers go nd still have a QB of the future.

July 10, 2008  12:21 PM ET

If they win home field, not to many teams can go there and beat them.

Except a Falcons team led by Vick of all people and the Giants last year.....

July 10, 2008  12:21 PM ET

Would anyone like to have a taco?

July 10, 2008  12:23 PM ET

Last year was their best shot and they blew it....no reason for him to return except to totally screw the team for 1 more year of game losing INTs.....

July 10, 2008  12:27 PM ET

very nice final argument Porkins.....great analogy

July 10, 2008  12:31 PM ET

he definitely deserves a taco!
