Must use at least two players from different decade, Must have played at least 5 years in the decade you are using them from. And you must list the decade that you are using that player for. List the players first in the First argument, argue your point of view in second and third. I choose the American League Team. The all-star game is at the Yankee Studium, you can use the DH

C- Carlton Fisk (70's)
1B- Don Mattingly (80's)
2B- Chuck Knoblauch (90's)
3B- A-Rod (2000's)
SS- Derek Jeter (1990's)
OF- Rickey Henderson (80's)
OF- Reggie Jackson (70's)
OF- Jim Rice (80's)
DH- David Ortiz (2000-2008)

P- Roger Clemens (1990's)
P- Nolan Ryan (70's)
P- Pedro Martinez- (2000's)
CL- Mariano Rivera (90's)

Bench Reserve- Cal Ripken (90's)

Good Luck!

Happy Birthday SportsFan!

C - Johnny Bench (70s)
1B - Jeff Bagwell (90s)
2B - Joe Morgan (70s)
3B - Mike Schmidt (80s)
SS - Barry Larkin (90s)
OF - Barry Bonds (00s)
OF - Sammy Sosa (90s)
OF - Tony Gwynn (80s)
DH - Dale Murphy (80s)
P- Steve Carlton (70s)
P- Tom Seaver (70s)
P- Greg Maddux (90s)
CL - Trevor Hoffmann (00s)
Bench - Ryne Sandberg (80s)

and because you didn't argue and it's your birthday, I won't argue either.

Now that we have of all of our teams in. I will argue my offense team in this argument, than I will list my pitchers in final argument.
Carlton Fisk- Seven time all-star catcher in decade of the 70's. 1972 AL ROY, won the gold glove in 1972.
Don Mattingly- six time all-star, 1985 AL MVP, 1985 major league player of the year.
Chuck Knoblauch- 4 time all-star, Rookie of the year in 1991, 4 world series rings, won the gold glove in 1997
A-Rod- Three time AL MVP in 2003, 2005, and 2007. Three time AL Hank Aaron award winner, Two time gold glove champion, was the quickest and youngest player to reach 500 homeruns.
Derek Jeter - Three time all-star in decade of 1990's, won three WS in that decade also, AL rookie of the year in 1996.

Rickey Henderson- 1989 ALCS MVP, won the gold glove in 1981, 8 time all-star.
Reggie Jackson- 8 time all-star, Two world series rings and he was the MVP in them, including three homeruns in one game, Major league player of the year in 1973, won the AL Babe Ruth award in 1977.

I will argue rest of my offense and my pitchers in the final argument. Your turn Rstowe. Thanks for saying Happy birthday to me. Good Luck! Ran out of space.

Personally I would have used Roberto Alomar at 2B for your team over Knobby, but that's just me.

Okay, here are what my guys did in the decades I used them for (pitchers last)

Bench: 2 MVPs, 10 All-Star, 1 World Series MVP, 1 Major League Player of the Year in 70, 8 Gold Gloves
Bagwell: Rookie of the Year, 1 MVP, 3 Silver Sluggers, 4 All-Star, 1 Gold Glove, 1 Major League Player of the Year in 94
Morgan: 2 MVPs, 9 All-Star, 5 Gold Gloves, 2 time Major League Player of the Year in 75 and 76
Schmidt: 3 MVPs, 6 Silver Sluggers, 8 All-Star, 6 Gold Gloves, World Series MVP
Larkin: 1 MVP, 8 All-Star, 7 Silver Sluggers, 3 Gold Gloves
Bonds: 4 MVPs (all in a row), 5 Silver Sluggers, 6 All-Star, 2 time Major League Player of the Year in 01 and 04
Sosa: 1 MVP, 3 Silver Sluggers, 3 All-Star, 2 seasons over 63 HRs, Major League Player of the Year in 98
Gwynn: 5 All-Star, 4 Silver Sluggers, 3 Gold Gloves, led league in Batting Average 4 times (with a high of .370)
Murphy: 2 MVPs, 4 Silver Sluggers, 7 All-Star, 5 Gold Gloves
Sandberg: 1 MVP, 6 All-Star, 4 Silver Sluggers, 1 Major League Player of the Year in 84, 7 Gold Gloves

Out of Room

Big Papi was the 2004 ALCS MVP, help the redsox win two world series rings, and also help the redsox made the greatest comeback over the yankees in 2004.

Cal Ripken- A hall of famer, 10 time all-star, 1982 AL rookie of the year, Won the AL MVP in 1991, Begin to play everyday to break the record for the most games played striaght.

Jim Rice- 5 time all-star

Now for my pitchers.

Roger Clemens- 5 time all-star in the decade of 1990's, 3 time Cy young winner, won a ring with the Yankees.

Nolan Ryan- Four time all-star, pitcher of the year of 1977.

Pedro Martinez- Won the 2004 world series with the Red Sox, 3 time all-star with the Red Sox, won the Cy young award in 2000.

Mariano Rivera- 2 time all-star, won three world series, one of the best closers in the decade of 1990's and he still one of the best closers today, and his awards were 1999-AL-Babe Ruth Award,1999-AL-Rolaids Relief and 1999-ML-WS MVP.

Well I am done here. Great Birthday TD, Rstowe. Your turn.

Carlton - 2 Cy Youngs, 5 All-Star, 1 Pitching Triple Crown, 2 Pitcher of the Years
Seaver - 2 Cy Youngs, 8 All-Stars, 1 Pitcher of the Year
Maddux - 4 Cy Youngs (all in a row), 7 All-Star, 4 Pitcher of the Years (all in a row), 10 Gold Gloves, Twice had ERA under 2 in the 90s
Hoffman - 4 All-Stars, set the record for most career saves in the 00s, 6 seasons in the 00s with over 40 saves

I have arguabley the best EVER Catcher, 2B, 3B (until ARod retires). All my SPs have at least 2 Cy Youngs (Nolan Ryan has 0 for you) and the all-time Save record holder. I also have 2 of the best hitting OFs ever in Bonds (overall hitting) and Gwynn (hitting for average).

This is close, but I believe I have the best roster, top to bottom. Knoblauch was decent for you, but I believe Roberto Alomar would have been a better choice at 2B.

Good luck birthday boy!

July 10, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Are we only supposed to use stats/awards for the decade we chose for our players? Or is it for their career?

July 10, 2008  11:19 AM ET

At first cut, I have:

C: right
1B: push
2B: right
SS: right
3B: left
OFx2: right
3rd OF: push
SP x2: left
3rd P: right
CL: push
BN: push

Good lists by both, but on names alone I'm leaning right. I'll wait for args.

July 10, 2008  11:20 AM ET

which 2 SPs do you have going left Porkins?

July 10, 2008  11:20 AM ET

You know my feelings about Ryan....

July 10, 2008  11:28 AM ET

AAWWWW can I play?

July 10, 2008  11:36 AM ET

Coach is in his 70s as well

July 10, 2008  11:36 AM ET

rstowe, Nolan Ryan is a top 3 strikeout pitcher in history. Maybe even # 1. Nonsense.

July 10, 2008  11:40 AM ET

I cahllenge anyone to a round two of this TD, Man I like!! LOL

July 10, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Nolan Ryan is overrated, in my opinion. He played like 19 years and he never even won a Cy Young. Not that a Cy Ypung decides your career, but if you are playing for that long...

July 10, 2008  11:40 AM ET

good point Moon.....I didn't think of that....all those walks and ZERO cy youngs must have been clogging my mind.

July 10, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Coach, I'd do it! But go easy on me this time, haha.

July 10, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Nolan Ryan isn't a top pitcher of all time though.

July 10, 2008  11:40 AM ET

coach - I'm up for it....want to do 1940-1969 same rules?

July 10, 2008  11:41 AM ET

I cahllenge anyone to a round two of this TD, Man I like!! LOL
[The] Coach | 07/10/08, 11:40 AM

I'd do it..but can we finish it before 5:00 CST?

July 10, 2008  11:41 AM ET

To be fair, Ryan played for losers most of his career. While I wouldn't put him on this list, he does deserve credit for being a dominating pitcher.

July 10, 2008  11:42 AM ET

good point Moon.....I didn't think of that....all those walks and ZERO cy youngs must have been clogging my mind.

Walks are a part of the game. And he never won the Cy Young because there was a league wide bias against him for his prowess on the mound.

July 10, 2008  11:42 AM ET

lets go dyhard, I'll let you go first!

July 10, 2008  11:42 AM ET

coach - that explains his win/loss record but not his walks

July 10, 2008  11:43 AM ET

I would have to look, were they bad as a total or per season? How was his whip?
