*Only stats for the Yankees are allowed*

I will be doing this for EVERY team in the MLB, even teams that it might seem obvious for...please argue your best.

*They HAVE to be LIVING*

*They can be active, but stats BEFORE this season only count*

My pick is Yogi Berra.

He was a 3-time AL MVP
He was in the top 5 in MVP voting 7 times!
15 All-Star selections
10 World Series championships
.280 career BA with the Yankees
#8 jersey retired with the Yankees
1174 total runs scored
321 total doubles
49 triples
2148 total hits
358 career HR
1430 career RBI
30 career stolen bases
704 walks - 411 strike outs (this is a plus, got on base more than he struck out)
.380 career OBP
5623 total outs made while only having 8355 total plate appearances

WORLD SERIES RECORDS
total WS games played - 75
total WS at-bats - 259
total WS hits - 71
total WS doubles - 10
total WS singles - 49
total WS games caught - 63
total WS catcher putouts - 457

Hit the first pinch-hit HR in World Series history off of Dodger pitcher Ralph Branca.

He received MVP votes in 15 consecutive seasons.

He is the best LIVING Yankee legend.

Reggie Jackson

Love the Berra pick

But here is my MAJOR problem with him-

Was it even HIS team?

Was he even Robin to Mantles Batman? Was he even the Green Arrow?

During the BULK of the 50's the Yankees had 3-6 All-Stars - and do you think it was YOGI who got them there?

Even in the 60s there were two Yankees going to the mid-season classic

Whitey Ford
Mickey Mantle

There is NO denying that in the years Reggie was there, it was REGGIE who "stirred the drink"

You list TOTALS

Find me ONE of his home runs as legendary as Reggie's THIRD home run in game 6.

Find me ONE series where he was as MONSTROUS as Reggie was.

The Yankees are KNOWN for the POSTSEASON success- and Reggie has a WORLD SERIES MVP as a Yankee

does Berra?

Let me make your argument for you

"but he only played 5 years!!!"

Let me counter that with-

The Yankees RETIRED his number so apparently they wanted him as a permanent place in their history

Reggie EARNED 2 rings in 5 years

Yogi HELPED get 10 in 19 years

It wasn't even Reggie Jackson's team anyway.

Yogi Berra really helped out the pitching staff, and made the pitching staff better. He caught MANY games for the Yankees in his tenure with the team, and he also helped make Whitey Ford a LOT better, and also just completely made the pitching squad a LOT better.

Look at Jorge Posada, he has caught Mariano Rivera and other pitchers the Yankees have had, and he has made them better with his catching skill.

Reggie only played there 5 years...he isn't the legend of the Yankees. He played better for the A's...as stats have shown.

Reggie didn't "earn" two rings, he helped get. Every player on a team, helps get the team to where they are...they aren't THE TEAM.

Yogi Berra was a GREAT player, and he showed that for 19 seasons with the Yankees. Reggie palyed 5 years with the Yankees, and didn't show that he was the LEGEND of the Yankees.

Just because someone has a retired number, that doesn't make him a legend of the Yankees.

Yogi Berra SET World Series records...did Reggie do that?

Yogi Berra earned 10 rings, and Reggie only earned 2 rings.

Yogi Berra is the living legend of the Yankees.

Yogi Berra SET World Series records

Really? What single season records did he set?

Do you know that If I - if I was as Old as Stowe - was Babe Ruths Caddy- and played on every team he did- I was the 8th best player on the team but I got just ONE hit every game -

You know where that places me on the list of Hits in a world series?

4th. Thats right- If I play in the same number of games as Ruth did I come in 4th in hits if I only get ONE HIT PER GAME

So don;t give me MOST - Career.

Please.

They are not going to give out a World Series Ring for being there 50 times- They give them out for the Better TEAM and the better PLAYER

and that is Reggie Jackson

Category: World Series

Name me the most Awe inspiring Performance

Even Baseball people like Stowe and Coach wont get to far down thier list before the come to 3 pitches, 3 swings, 3 runs.

And when most people think Yankees- How many of them are going to name Reggie before Yogi?

Consider Reggie is ALL-TIME 9th on OB% with .457

Who do YOU want?

5 years 2 rings as the MAN
19 years 10rings as Aquaman

Give me the guy with the team on his back.

So you are mostly backing up Reggie Jackson with that ONE game when he hit 3 HR.

I'm talking about EVER, and Reggie didn't do as well as Yogi AS A YANKEE.

Reggie had ONE great game...while Yogi had numberous games that were great.

Yogi Berra set records in the World Series where it COUNTS THE MOST.

Reggie Jackson hasn't done that.

You wasted about 100-200 characters talking about if you were's. That doesn't mean anything from what yous aid. The Yankees were in the World Series a LOT and they always had a good team, and when Yogi Berra was there, he was a TOP player on the team, and made the pitching squad A LOT better.

So because one player is better than the other, they will give a ring to him? No...they give the ring to who WINS the WS. That doens't necessarily mean that they are better, it just means that they were able to win.

Teams can get to the WS every time...but it matters who WINS, not the better team.

Who cares about "awe inspiring" performances, this is who is the best living player for the Yankees.

That is Yogi Berra.

Yogi Berra was a HUGE contribution to the 10 rings the Yanks won.

I want Berra, with 10 RINGS.

So you are telling me that Yogi Berra is the reason the Yankees Had a top pitching staff?

Right?

So if say I went out there and caught for say Sandy Koufax - he'd have an ERA of 12.00 in 1965

I'm not saying that the catcher is not important in baseball- but you act as if Yogi could turn your Local team at the Y into the 90s Atlanta Braves!

Do you HONESTLY think that if say Jorge Posada was catching in those games the Yankees would have never won more than 40 games a year? Whitey Ford would be a washed up MLB player slinging Hash Browns at Whitey's resturant in Wilimington NC?

You CANNOT make the claim that if ALL of the members of ANY of the TEN TITLE TEAMS that Yogi Berra were part of were STILL ALIVE

You could NOT make the claim Yogi was the best on that feild.

But considering that most of the important parts of the Reggie Jackson Yankees ARE still alive and I can make that claim.

the ONLY reason you claim he is the living legend- sorry to say this- is because he has OUT-LIVED everyone

NOT out-preformed them

July 13, 2008  09:01 PM ET

Why do they have to be living, because I have one that defined them in a bad way at the same time good way. But he is dead.

July 13, 2008  09:02 PM ET

They probably have to be living since it's the Living Legends. :)

July 13, 2008  09:04 PM ET

Anybody wanna guess?

Is this really true?

Lou Gehrig!

Dave...are you taking a baseball TD?

dyhard is back! |

I have to get my brains beat in once a month in a TD to keep me humble, and baseball is a good way.

July 13, 2008  09:50 PM ET

Reggie would be my pick

The article that was the basis for this throwdown is here:

July 13, 2008  10:01 PM ET

I already knew that...I get the USA Today paper (baseball section) weekly. That is why I'm doing all the teams...and I just thought of starting with the Yankees.

July 13, 2008  10:02 PM ET

Actually it is more like USA Today Sports weekly section.

July 13, 2008  10:02 PM ET

Reggie actually had a more impressive tenure with the A's. In Oakland, he won more World Series championships, was awarded his only MVP and had better all-around skills. Berra is the greatest living Yankee. Whitey Ford is the only one that even comes close.

July 13, 2008  10:05 PM ET

The other players dyhard will choose for this series will come from here:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2008-07-10-sw-living-leg ends_N.htm

Do your own work dyhard.

July 13, 2008  10:09 PM ET

Umm...it is called usatoday is providing me with topics, while I'm actually doing research. There are most that I agree with who they choose, and some they didn't choose.

TradeAngelos | 07/13/08, 10:02 PM

I'm thinking Reggie or Ricky Henderson for the A's.

July 13, 2008  10:29 PM ET

had actually thought of Winfeild

but Reggie WAS the Yankees

July 13, 2008  10:54 PM ET

Reggie narrowly over Jeter and Winfield.

July 13, 2008  11:17 PM ET

I'm going to make an argument tomorrow...is that okay Dave?
