Chase is the perfect hitter for this kind of thing. He doesn't try to hit huge bombs. He has that smooth line-drive swing. He's going to be all about quantity, not quality. All the other guys are going to be trying to put it deep into the bleachers at Yankee Stadium and are going to pop up too many balls.

There's a guy in this competition who treats every at-bat of every game as if he's in a Home Run Derby: Dan Uggla. He tries to hit every pitch out of Yellowstone Park anyway, so this Derby is no different. He's going to make Yankee Stadium look small tonight.

Great, we're debating slugging second basemen. Uggla's all-or-nothing swing won't help here. He'll connect on a few, but he'll hit too many fly balls. Utley will slap it right over that short porch in right at Yankee Stadium.

You've been eating too many Philly Cheesesteaks over there Philly boy. You know who wins when the Phillies and Marlins clash. Need I remind you about 2003? That was a nice division crown you guys won last season, thanks of course to the Marlins crushing the Mets on the season's last day.

Jake, do me a favor. Go over to SI.com, click on MLB and click on Standings. Then scroll down to the NL East. Hm, seems the Phillies are in first. And that is why, my man, Chase Utley is going to win tonight. Oh, and by the way, when you're done looking at the MLB standings, you might want to click on our intra-office fantasy league. Hm, just like the Philadelphia Phillies, looks like I'm in first place. another reason Utley is going to win tonight. Chase, Chase Utley. Go Phillies! Go Chase!

Oh, fantasy sports. Yeah let's talk about that. Let's go there. I distinctly remember an intra-office fantasy football playoff game in which Willis McGahee ran 55 yards for a touchdown (and then threw up in the end zone) against the Jets to give MY team a victory over YOUR team. Not only is Uggla a better pick for the Derby, but I'd take him in a wrestling, boxing, or MMA fight over Utley any day of the week.

Andrew, I agree with you on Chase. I think I have a "man crush" on him...

July 14, 2008  09:08 AM ET

josh hamilton has to the sentimental favorite. i think a left-handed hitter will win. utley? hamilton? my pick is uggla.

July 14, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Same here jbowman. Uggla can hit the ball really hard. And when your getting BP pitches, you don't have to worry about him striking out. He will be able to launch 'em all night.

Chase Utley couldn't win the homer un derby at my barbeque.

July 14, 2008  09:33 AM ET

UTLEY, I think Perloff has a man crush as well.

I am the defending home run champion at Porkins BBQ and no I will not falter to Utley.

July 14, 2008  09:54 AM ET

Andrew the home run leader almost never wins the derby

ps: MAKE LONGER ARGUEMENTS

July 14, 2008  10:14 AM ET

Did they pay you extra to mention the insurance company in your title?

July 14, 2008  10:16 AM ET

I'm sure State Farm will have its logo inbedded in the argument section like Jumper did when it was released.

July 14, 2008  10:20 AM ET

hey larry, here's another way to look at a-rod NOT participating in the HR Derby. he DOES care greatly about the Yankee franchise. let's say he participated and won the HR Derby. do the Yankees gain any ground in the AL East? does his HR Derby win help them in the postseason? actually, no. it doesn't. instead of messing up his swing for games that ACTUALLY matter, a-rod is preparing for the second half of the season. i'm sick of a-rod being held to a different standard. if the beloved jeter were leading the AL in HRs, no Yankee fans would be screaming at him to participate in the HR Derby.

July 14, 2008  10:24 AM ET

emporer, it is the official name of the HR Derby. i think they're obligated by MLB to include State Farm in the title.

July 14, 2008  10:48 AM ET

thanks for the history lesson. would you rather see a-rod win the HR Derby or the Yankees make the playoffs? i'm not saying the two are mutually exclusive, but, i i were a yankee fan, i would rather see my best player get ready for the second half of the season than win an exhibition. wait, yankee stadium is the house that ruth built? really? thought it was the house that bob feller built.

July 14, 2008  10:55 AM ET

I'll be watching the Allstate Soap Box Derby instead.

July 14, 2008  11:01 AM ET

Larry, stop copying and pasting your arguments from other peoples posts on other sites. Thats pretty sad in itself...

July 14, 2008  11:15 AM ET

They should have the SI Staff to delete the retarded accounts!!

July 14, 2008  11:16 AM ET

Utley doesn't have the raw power. I'm putting my money on either Morneau or Lance Berkman, with a chance from Braun.

July 14, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Good Jacob Luft made the right pick. He is 100% right. He swings for the fences everytime no matter where he is playing, so the Home Run Derby should be heaven for him.

Just wondering, are you guys gunna use more than 5 lines?

July 14, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Uggla tries to hit every pitch out of Yellowstone park? In Wyoming???

What?

July 14, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Morneau?

July 14, 2008  11:35 AM ET

Larry forgot to take his medicine today. He's a little feisty.

Can this throwdown be brought to me by a movie or product? I need some sweet, sweet marketing if I'm going to pay attention.
