You know the rules Dave

Try to stay away from players I picked.

DL: 1971 Los Angeles Rams

The Rams roster Boasts 3 HOfers in Olsen, Jones, and Youngblood

DE - Jack Youngblood
DT - Merlin Olsen
DT - Phil Olsen
DE - Deacon Jones

LB Core: 1976 Pitt Steeler

Not only the first realy dynasty of the SB era, but the 76 Steelers boasted the #1 D in the NFL

LB - Jack Ham
LB - Jack Lambert
LB - Andy Russel

Secondary: 1994 SF 49ers

This one was trickey. I was looking at the Ravens, and a few other teams but the 49ers boast 3 PBers and 16 INTS in the secondary ONLY

CB - Deion Sanders
CB - Eric Davis
SS - Merton Hanks and his neck
FS - Tim McDonald

Good Luck Dave

When I think of All-Time Defense

I think

1985 Bears

DE- Dan Hampton 6.5sacks 3 FumblesR
DT- Steve McMichael 8.0 Sacks 1 FumbleR
DT- Fridge Perry 5.0 Sacks 2 FumblesR
DE- Richard Dent 17.0 Sacks 2 FumbleR - plus 2 picks

My front four has 36.5 sacks - plus a Run-Stuffin line that is DEADLY

My LB squad:
1986 Giants

(since I will be running the 4-3 I have to drop a ILB -Reasons)

LB- Carl Banks 6.5 Sacks 0 picks 1 FumbleR
MLB- Harry Carson 2.0 Sacks 1 Pick 2 Fumble R
LB- LT 20.5 (LEGIT) Sacks 0 picks

Now I know this is a SACK machine- and we all know Pressure starts with a QB rush- so my secondary has to be good right?

(1971 Cowboys would have been my team if I had to go ALL NFL)

Herb Adderly (HOF) 6 Picks
Mel Renfro (HOF) 4 Picks
Cornell Green (all-Pro that year) 2 Picks
Cliff Harris (SHOULD be HOF) 2 Picks

But since you will allow AFL

I will take the:
The 1961 Chargers

Claude Gibson 5 Picks
Dick Harris 7 Picks THREE Tds (1st team All-Pro)
Bob Zeman 8 Picks
Charlie McNeil 9 Picks TWO TDS (1st team All-Pro)

29 total Picks
5 TOuchdowns returns.

Pretty Good on those quick drops huh?

Bears/Giants/Chargers

Good Luck

Nice job Dave....

Lets look at my Dline for a second, shall we?

Merlin Olsen is the only player besides Bruce Matthews to make 14 straight PBs....Not only was Olsen one of the top 4 DT's of all time, but he was smart too. He earned his MASTERS in Economics in the off-season. Nowadays in the off-season players get drunk on wreck Lambo's and Boats. Merlin went to college. Now you team Olsen with Youngblood who is one of the more underated DE's in all of NFL lore. Not only was he a nasty DE, but he also has 8 blocked FG's. 60% of NFL players go there entire career without even playing, let alone BLOCK 8 FG's. Mix in Deacon Jones and you have the best DL of all time

With Lambert and Ham, Stowe could play the other LB spot with his walker, and still be a force. Im not gonna spend too much time on Ham and Lambert cause my LB's smoke yours

Like Porkins said, the 94 Niners secondary was the best on Super Tecmo Bowl....But seriously, 3 out of 4 PBers....17 INTS (I put 16 in my last arguement, but I miss-counted)....4 of them returned for TD's. As good as the 49ers Offense was in 1994, thier D was just as good ranking in the top 6 of most stats

Interesting Stat line

Since you wanted

- Single season By Unit only

Merlin Olson could have made 150 All-Pro teams- but the fact of the matter is only ONE year counts

and I don;t see where Olson getting a masters degree means anything

Does the fact he was on Little House on the Prairie mean anything?

no.

I would have LOVED to see the 1985 Bears in Techmo Bowl

Off 81
Def 99
Overall 99

Uh DaYum

whoa, whoa, whoa.....I was simply stating that Merlin Olsen made 14 PBs over the course of his career. And it was ONLY 1 line of my 1165 character arguement Dave......NOT my entire arguement.

And yes, mentioning he got his masters IS important, considering it has bearing on him.....Just me mentioning that LT was probably all jacked up on Coke at the time of his 20 sack season. Not that Im spreading any rumuors...He admitted it himself in his book.

So on one side of the coin you have Merlin Olsen and his Masters Degree....And on the other side of the coin you have LT and his cocaine addiction.....Hmmmmm???? I think that matters....

Since you really didnt give me anything to work with I'll have to go on my own here Dave....LT is a great LB and I wont say different. But Ham and Lambert together greatly out wiegh LT and Carl Banks. Carl Banks in his own right was a good LB. He belongs in the Shane Conlan, John Offerdahl class....Not the Butkus, Singletary, Ham class....

You forgot one thing about Merlin Olsen there Roger

He was the FTD Spokeman

nothing says TOUGH like Flowers.

But thats ok.

For ONE year- my Bears D-Line came through for Da Bears and Anchored one of the Best Defenses in HISTORY -sadly this was the Fridge as a rookie and Buddy Ryans last year in Chi-Town

so we will never know if Ryan might have made the Bears a dynasy on the defensive side of the Ball.

LT+coke > Mean Joe Green + Coke

I'm just sayin

The 1961 Chargers - who also had a rookie at Corner- had the most INTS ever by a team- and averaging 7 picks EACH is far out stripping the 4 each average your team have

I even have one more return INT for a TD than you

Did I mention that my team played 2 games LESS than yours did?

61 Chargers - 2.07 Picks per game
93 niners 1.06 Picks per game

--

Final thought

My Chargers corners could TACKLE too!

Not to be a stickler, but Andy Russell retired before the '76 season. 3rd starting LB for the Steelers that year was Loren Toews.

July 14, 2008  11:01 AM ET

ok, I'm a stickler

July 14, 2008  11:09 AM ET

I can change it if you want to T-fo....But PFR.com has him on the 76 Steelers Roster

July 14, 2008  11:48 AM ET

CB - Deion Sanders
CB - Eric Davis
SS - Merton Hanks and his neck
FS - Tim McDonald

Best total unit in Super Tecmo Bowl.

By the way, the 1961 Chargers were an AFL team. What does that do to the TD?

July 14, 2008  11:49 AM ET

Wow...nice team Goodell. Can't wait to see what A throwdowner named NCshvDavid has up his sleeve.
