From when the season began, the Mets already announced Brian Schneider as the starting catcher instead of Ramon Castro. I thought this was a bone-headed move and now at mid-season . . . I was right.

Schneider has done terrible at catcher this season, hitting .254 with two home runs and 20 runs batted in in 205 at-bats. The Mets should have known this was coming because the season before, he hit .235.

Ramon Castro, on the other hand, is a tremendous hitter. He has just about 1,000 MLB at-bats in his career because in his years with the Mets, Paul Lo Duca was the starter and there was no way that the Mets would shove Lo Duca out of the lineup and now that Lo Duca finally leaves, Castro thinks he has a chance.

Castro hit 44 home runs in his career and he had 151 runs batted, and last season, he was on pace for over 40 home runs if he had 600 at-bats. He has tons of power and decent contact - he has hit .285 in his last two years with the Mets.

This year, Castro is hitting .286 with three home runs in 77 at-bats. Sure, Schneider may be a better fielding catcher than Castro but Ramon is still pretty good. It has come to a point where Castro should be the full-time star

There are three kinds of lies. Lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Marginal players who provide pop off the bench and solid defense make you fall in love with them far too quickly.

Players like Castro can not be over-used for one reason and one reason only: Exposure. His career .234 batting average is not a mirage. The only reason he HAS hit .285 the last 2 seasons is because he has been used in doses. Less exposure = increased production.

Secondly, you bring up his 'pace for 40 home runs' last season. I really don't like statistical projections because they are entirely misleading.

If you were to place him in the lineup for 600 at-bats, which, by the way, is utterly insane, its safe to say his average would be alot closer to the .234 lifetime mark than the mark the Mets have gotten him to. He can hit home runs. Which is why he's great to have to add pop and spell your full timer.

And in the end, he will never play to reach 600 at-bats regardless. Why? He cant stay healthy. At all. He has practically never been healthy for an entire season. He wasn't even on the roster in the beginning of this season.

More on Schneider to follow.

Ramon Castro has a .259 career average as a New York Met - barely .260 and that is pretty good for a catcher - fantastic for a catcher who is behind Brian Schneider on the depth chart.

In Schneider's career with the Mets (less than one season) he is hitting .254, right around his career average of .253 with almost no power.

Maybe Castro isn't the best contact hitter in the world but he is certainly better than Schneider at contact hitting. If you don't like to look at statistical projections, look at it this way - Castro has just hit five less home runs than Schneider despite Schneider having about 1,500 more career at-bats than Castro.

Castro wasn't on the opening day roster because he was injured. Yes, he may get injured a few times every few years but mean as well use him as their starter when he is healthy, which the Mets don't.

Even if Castro did hit .234 (which he isn't), I would still take his power and his clutch over the weak hitting Schneider. Sure, Schneider may have a better career fielding percentage, .003 ahead of Castro, but not a big difference. He has a big bat and he has deserved the chance to be a starter.

You didn't refute my point on the surge in Castro's average. Hitting above his career mark is related to directly to the Mets' handling of him, platooning him at catcher to protect over-exposure at the plate and to protect him from himself, quite frankly.

March 30, 2008 Placed on 15-day DL (Strained right hamstring)
August 18, 2007 Placed on 15-day DL (Stiff lower back)
August 21, 2006 Transferred to 60-day DL
August 04, 2006 Placed on 15-day DL (Strained left oblique)
May 16, 2005 Placed on 15-day DL (Strained right quadriceps)
July 31, 2004 Transferred to 60-day DL
June 02, 2004 Placed on 15-day DL (Right toe inflammation)

Sure, catchers get hurt. But this is just flat out not staying healthy. He has never proven he can handle a full schedule of AB's. He has not proven he can hit for a higher average with increased playing time.

Schneider is here to handle the pitching staff. His hitting isn't abysmal. Its been sub-par over the course of the last year. But his value goes beyond his bat.

Castro is a commodity. Platooning. Protecting his over-exposure and limiting the propensity to injury is why he IS valuable. Messing that up could spell doom.

The Mets aren't neccasarilly giving him opportunities when a left-hander is pitching, if Castro only plays when the Mets are facing lefties, I could see your point, but he has had around 550 at-bats in a Mets uniform, over 400 have been against righties and Castro is a righty. If you are thinking that Castro plays against lefties which is why his average is high, you're wrong.

Plus, Castro stepped into his prime when he came to the Mets. He has hit right around .255 since he turned 26, and your prime years stretch from about 26-33 as a catcher. He isn;t just getting lucky, he's just getting better as he gets to his prime.

I'm not saying that Castro should be the starter when he is injured, he should just be the starter. When he gets hurt, Brian Schneider should take his place. When Castro is not injured, he should start for most of th games.

Brian Schneider is just terrible at hitting. He may be a little bit better at catching than Castro is but at hitting, it isn't even close. Castro's career On-Base Percentage of .314 is just .011 behind Schneider's but over the last four years, Castro's OBP is around .340.

Castro has tons of power, let him use it.

I know when Castro plays. I watch the team daily.

Castro came to the Mets at age 29, and promptly hit .244 in 209 at-bats and .238 in 126 AB's. Lights out? Prime? He's 32 y.o.

The last 2 seasons - yes - he has hovered around .285. And last year he even hit 11 home runs. Limited time pays dividends.

If you have a situation with a righty catcher with good pop that can spell a lefty starter who is more durable, manages a pitching staff better, and is a slightly better fielder - you have a good situation.

I dont think I'm smarter than Florida & NY's management. He could have been a starter for years now. Dont you think this has come up?

As baseball people, they're familiar with hitters being adjusted against at the plate. They are familiar with what regular wear and tear can do to certain players and not to others.

To the Mets - their pitching staff and defense is whats important at catcher. To have a catcher you can save for spells, why mess it up?

You want them to play him daily and then have him go down in 12 games? Then Cancel can back up. Yay.

Tons of power? Thats a bit, um, crazy.

His all-time high in OBP is .360. Which is in 77 AB's this year.

It should be interesting arguing this with a Mets fan

July 14, 2008  04:53 PM ET

Indeed. Good luck.

This guy absolutely can't be the every day guy. I watch enough of him to know that.

I said nothing about the lefty-righty split. Insinuations, insinuations.

Dentist appointment. I'll be back on around 4:30.

July 15, 2008  06:36 PM ET

For the record, Brian Schneider is 6 or 7 months younger than Ramon Castro, if that 'prime' argument is supposed to fly.

July 15, 2008  06:55 PM ET

Very good TD, but I give the slight edge to Moondizzle

July 15, 2008  07:47 PM ET

"and last season, he was on pace for over 40 home runs if he had 600 at-bats."

600 AB's? For a CATCHER? That's completely insane. What are you going to do, start him every day and bat him leadoff?

July 15, 2008  10:06 PM ET

Vote to the right...better arguments in my opinion.

July 16, 2008  09:27 PM ET

With no disrespect to Detroit Steel...there is no way I should have lost this TD.

July 16, 2008  09:29 PM ET

wait. im lost. where am i.

July 16, 2008  09:52 PM ET

Um - in the wrong spot dude. And, well, nobody lost this. Its what we call a tie.

Good TD Detroit.
