Which team that was under .500 has the best chance of making the NCAA Tournament?

LSU Tigers;13-18

They have a great new coach. Trent Johnson was came from Stanford to help lead them back to the Final Four. Johnson coached Stanford to a 3 seed last year and a top ten ranking at one point. He is a very good coach, and will make a BIG impact at LSU.

They bring back PLENTY of players. They lost ONLY 2 guys. 6 OF THEIR TOP 7 scorers come back; led by Marcus Thornton, one of the more underrated guys in college basketball. He averaged 19.6 points, 5.6 boards and even 2 assists.

They also have a lot of what is a huge need: EXPERIENCE. Remember when LSU went to the Final Four? They still have not one, but TWO STARTERS. You better believe that those guys want to prove they still have it. Tasmin Mitchell and Garrett Temple are two very good players who came back as seniors.

Yes, Randolph is gone. He didn???t lead the team in scoring, so they won???t miss that. He averaged just 1.2 assists, so that won???t be missed, either. In fact, this could be like Texas last year. The star freshman left, the team came together and had an even better season.

They have a top 18 recruiting class, led by a PF ranked #60 overall by ESPN to replace Randolph. 4 guys can contribute RIGHT NOW.

I'm going to go with the Boston College Eagles.

Only three games under .500 with a 14-17 record, BC presents the best opportunity to go from loser to the dance.

Returning the ACC's second highest scorer and third-best assister, guard Tyrese Rice, their top rebounder in Shamari Spears, and their leading thief in Rice, and adding three top 30 prospects for their respective positions, they're set for this upcoming year.

Coach Al Skinner has led the Eagles to seven NCAA Tourney berths and three NITs, and once was the NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR! Meanwhile, LSU basketball is coached by Trent Johnson, who has less years as a coach than Skinner does postseason berths at BC.

BC's returning their top six scorers from a year ago as well, so they're not trying to replace a gaping hole like the Tigers are in losing a lottery pick to the NBA.

People may remember LSU's recent success, but remember this: They've lost Glen Davis, Tyrus Thomas and almost all of the supporting cast from their run to the 2006 Final Four.

Boston College is more likely to go to the NCAA Tournament than LSU is.

Good pick.

BC plays in the ACC. They have to compete with UNC, Duke, Clemson, Maryland, Wake, Miami, even VT, FSU and GT are competitive. By comparison, LSU has to deal with Tennessee, Vandy, UK and Florida. They also get Aubrun, UGA, Alabama and South Carolina. From top to bottom, the ACC is one of the most competitive conferences in college basketball. That's an advantage for LSU.

Thornton was 2nd in the SEC in scoring last year. Three of the top 25 rebounders are back. Johnson was second in blocks. Three of the top 16 in steals are back. LSU was the BEST FREE THROW SHOOTING TEAM last year, and we know how important those are.

Look what they have coming in. ESPN ranked, LSU has:

PF Grade: 89
SF Grade: 85
PG Grade: 77
C Grade: 77

BC has:

SG Grade: 87
SF Grade: 73
PF Grade: 40

I don't have to say their names, but you can see that LSU has 4 solid recruits coming in who can help out RIGHT AWAY. BC seems to have just 1.

Skinner isn't bad, but Johnson is no slouch. He took both Nevada and Stanford to the Sweet 16 and was +.500 at both schools.

They lost all of the supporting cast?

TWO STARTERS ARE BACK THIS YEAR! How many guys who started on a Final Four team does BC have?

That point guard hasn't signed the letter of intent. If he is going to play, it's awful late in the summer to be still accepting admittance into a school. Trust me on this, I've just gone through the college application process.

You're saying that LSU has four solid recruits and that BC has 1 and then one who "can't help out right away". Since he's only ranked 4 points lower than your last two, you're either going to have to discredit your recruits or give more credit to mine, because right now, you're telling the truth out of neither side of your keyboard.

That two starters claim is a lie: Thomas, Davis, Tack Minor and Darrel Mitchell are all gone from that team, leaving AT MOST one starter left.

How many times has Trent Johnson been a coach of the year? 0.

How many times has Al Skinner? 3. Once at Massachusetts in 1992, twice at BC (2001, 2005). What's significant about the 2001 edition is that Skinner was the coach of the year.

Coaching advantage goes squarely to the Eagles.

Really 0x? They led the nation in free throw percentage? Apparently, without enough shot attempts to qualify for it.

They led the SEC in free throw %. My bad on the misunderstanding.

That shows that BOTH TEMPLE AND MItCHELL STARTED IN THE FINAL FOUR. How many guys do BC have that played in the Final Four? Experience is key, which is an advantage for LSU.

BC has just one senior coming back. LSU has five. We both know how leadership plays big late in the season, which gives LSU an advantage with leadership.

Skinner is a good coach. But we saw what he did with BC last year, with him at the helm, they were under .500. Johnson was guiding Stanford to a top 10 ranking and the Sweet 16. He will come in and make a BIG DIFFERENCE FOR THE BETTER.

Bass, the PG signed a letter of intent. You know how schools do this stuff. But even if he doesn't play, the still have Temple, a three year starter who is good. They bring in NOT ONE, BUT TWO top 40 PF's. Warren and Graham can come in and replace what Randolph did last year.

Conference Strenghth- LSU
Experience- LSU
Leadership- LSU
Free Throws- LSU
Recruiting Class- LSU

With all of those, a coaching change for the better and players ready to win, LSU is more likely to go to the NCAA's than BC is.

Conference strength?

Let's see:

Duke and Carolina, that's a given.

However:

Clemson lost their best player in James Mays.
Virginia Tech lost Deron Washington to the NBA Draft.
Miami's roster was absolutely decimated by graduations.
Maryland lost their only talented post players in James Gist and Bambale Osby.
Wake Forest was decimated by graduations and still haven't recovered from the death of coach Skip Prosser.
Florida State hasn't done anything since Charlie Ward was on the court for them.
Georgia Tech lost all of their scoring from last year.
Virginia lost four members of their starting lineup including Sean Singletary.
NC State lost talented post JJ Hickson to the NBA Draft and didn't have much talent to begin with.

This year the ACC is fully up for the taking.

Why are you talking out of both sides of your mouth? On one hand, you're touting experience, on the other, you're bragging up freshman? They need... experience. BC returned their starting lineup from last season. Top to bottom, BC has more experience than LSU.

BC was rebuilding last year after the loss of all-ACC player Jared Dudley. It's safe to say that after this year, everyone will know that project is over.

Stupid question marks.

LOL. But I'm leaning right... Tyrese Rice is amazing and should lead this team to a good record. Plus Al Skinner is a great coach and should get them back to where they were with Jared Dudley. Their future is looking good.

Not to argue outside of the arguments, but Maryland has other good players. Vasquez, Hayes and Milbourne are all back. Plus they have Sean Mosley coming in. And while we're on it, Wake and FSU both pulled top 5 recruiting classes...
