Rules: one lineup, two AL starters, two NL starters, one AL closer, one NL closer, no DH. This is NOT in the form of a batting order. For outfielders, it doesn't matter where they play in the outfield. If players are currently on the DL, or they have just come off, they are eligable.

C: A.J. Pierzynski(White Sox)
1B: Derrek Lee(Cubs)-as hard as it would be to give the NL a fourth first baseman, he was arguably the biggest snub of all.
2B: Placido Polanco(Tigers)
SS: Jose Reyes(Mets)
3B: Garrett Atkins(Rockies)-as much as I wanted to choose Cantu, Atkins had superior OBP, OPS, avg., and the same amount of RBIs with a couple less homers. Plus, he is a far superior fielder.
OF: Xavier Nady(homer pick-Pirates)
OF: Jermaine Dye(White Sox)
OF: Pat Burrell(Phillies)

Pitchers:
AL starter: Shaun Marcum(Blue Jays)
AL starter: John Danks(White Sox)
AL closer: Troy Percival(Rays)-he did just come of the DL, but he has had a terrific season so far for the Rays, including a WHIP of .96.
NL starter: Cole Hamels(Phillies)
NL starter: Johan Santana(Mets)
NL closer: Jose Valverde(Astros)-not great numbers, but he has been arguably a top ten closer this season.

C Benjie Molina (Giants)
1b Ryan Howard (Phillies) - yea his average stinks, but his RBIS and HRs make up for it
2b Brandon Phillips (Reds)
3b Garrett Atkins you were spot on and I had Wright here (as I'm sure you did too) until he was a last minute reserve
SS Jose Reyes
OF Jason Bay (Pirates) - My homer pick haha
OF Jermaine Dye
OF Carlos Beltran (Mets)

NL
SP Jake Peavy (SD)
SP Johan Santana
CL Francisco Cordero (Reds)

AL
SP Shaun Marcum
SP John Lackey (Angels) - not many innings, but only 18 less than Marcum
CL Troy Percival

Differences at C, 1B, 2B, 2OFs NL SP/CL, and AL SP - should be fun!

AJ vs. Molina-AJ leads in OBP and slugging, while both have a .287 average. He also has more homers, and he has scored 11 more runs this season, along with a stolen base, which Molina doesn't have.

Lee vs. Howard-despite less homers, Lee has the exact same slugging %. Plus, he his OBP. is a solid .050 higher. Howard's homers don't make up for his pathetic pace to get over 200 k's,and the only person comparable is Adam Dunn. No one thinks he should be in.

Polanco vs. Phillips-although Phillips does have more power, Polanco is much better at getting on base. He has a better avg, and he draws more walks.

Nady vs. Bay-I knew it could come down to this. Nady has the second best avg. in baseball among all outfielders. He may not have Bay's power, but he isn't lacking with 12 home runs. Plus he has 3 more RBI's. Bay also has 26 more K's. So Nady makes more contact, strikes out less, drives in more runs, and has above average power. Looks like Nady is the clear choice.

Burrell vs. Beltran-Burrell contains an avg. .007 points higher, and he has 23 home runs, compared to Beltran's 15. Burrell gets on base much more, and he has a superior slugging pct.

Pitchers are up next.

AP has 1 more HR, but 21 less RBIs. Molina is hittin .303 with RISP and .333 with RISP and 2 outs. AP is hitting only .275 with RISP and a lousy .206 with RISP and 2 outs. Molina is a guy you can count on to drive in runs, and for that, he deserves to be on the All-Star team.

Again, all stars are made because they create and produce runs for their team. Howard might have a crappy average, but when there are RISP he is hitting .328, and with RISP and 2 outs, it jumps to .339. Lee? .304 with RISP but just .259 with RISP and 2 outs. Again, hitting for average is one thing, but bringing in runs is what seperates the 2.

For 2B, since getting on base and power numbers are hard to compare, they have the perfect stat for that. Phillips OPS is .798 while Polanco's is .743. Phillips also has 12 more HRs, 26 more RBIs, 9 more runs, and 17 more SBs.

Bay does have 26 more K's, but he has 32 more BB. Nady has a full K more than a BB in the K/BB ratio than Bay has. Bay also has 7 more HRs, 19 more Rs, a higher OPS, and 5 more stolen bases. Bay wins the battle of the Bucs

Beltran has 9 more rbi, 18 more runs, 15 more SBs and 17 less Ks...better overall #s makes up for less HRs

Hamels vs. Peavy-last year, I would have agreed with you. Peavy does win the ERA by quite a bit, but Cole plays in possibly the best hitters park in baseball. Peavy plays in THE pitchers park. Hamels has a better WHIP, 1.02 compared to 1.12 for Peavy. Hamels has a .214 avg against, compared to Peavy's .227. He has to complete game shutouts, compared to JP's zero. He averages 7.11 innings per outing, compared to Peavy's 6.28.

Valverde vs. Cordero-this may be your biggest advantage. Cordero does have a better ERA and WHIP. On the other hand, Valverde gets more K's per nine, and a lot less walks. He also has an 82.75 save percentage, compared to 82.6. While that may be extremely small, it is what really matters for closers. After all, as closers, it is their job to save games, which Valverde has been a little better at.

Marcum vs. Lackey-both have faced injuries, making them easy to overlook. Lackey has the better ERA, but Marcum has a far superior K's per nine, and a better WHIP of 1.00(third best starter) to 1.07. Lackey's opponents have hit .240 against him, while Marcum's have hit an abysmal .198 against him, making him second best among starters in that aspect.

Peavy/Hamels - as you said, my guy got a .68 better ERA, and the whips are very similar as well as the k/bb ratio. What separates the two is that Peavy has 0 earned runs in the last 14 innings pitched while Hamels last win was July 3rd.

Valverde/Cordero isn't really close as you said, your guy might have more saves, but my guy has a run and a half better ERA, a better whip, opponents are hitting .050 worse off him, he's given up 5 less home runs, and he blew less saves.

Marcum/Lackey - Marcum only has 5 wins in 15 starts while Lackey has 6 wins in 11 starts.
Marcum has a 3.19 K to BB ratio while Lackey has 4.4 K to BB ratio
Marcum's k/9inning is 7.88 while Lackey's is very comparable at 7.42 and far from "far superior"

All in all, I think we both picked great teams full of guys who deserved and very will could have been allstars. Unfortunately only one of us can win this (unless we get you your first tie)

Looking at my team, they have the better stats at driving in runs and for the most part, the better overall numbers.

The pitching staff is close, but i'll take my staff as they have the better ERA in all three matchups.

I'll try to work on this tomorrow morning. I have a dentist appointment, and then NCAA 09 all day long, but I'll find a few minutes somewhere to write this. Maybe I'll do this instead of eating, to max out my NCAA time.

July 15, 2008  05:39 PM ET

Nice topic , will wait for more arguements, between you two Pennsylvania boys.

July 16, 2008  05:05 PM ET

Great arguements so far guess I will wait for the final two,.

July 16, 2008  10:03 PM ET

July 17, 2008  12:00 AM ET

good td to you as well sir....how's the dynasty goin?

July 17, 2008  12:01 AM ET

3-0, dominating with the running game. You should head to Night Owls, we finally have something going on in there.

July 17, 2008  12:05 AM ET

gotta have Howard... its been 64 years since a player who lead their league in HR and RBi missed the ASG

July 17, 2008  12:06 AM ET

i'm headin to bed, i'll have to remember to stop in now that its back up

July 17, 2008  12:07 AM ET

Nice homer input. You know what Howard is going to do that has never happened before, let alone in 64 seasons? Strike out over 200 times!

July 17, 2008  12:07 AM ET

Later, Christopher.

July 17, 2008  01:54 PM ET

I am going right. Argument-wise, I thought both were good. But it seemed that Bigdleech compared stats more than arguing while Duquesne had more of an argument.

July 17, 2008  02:00 PM ET

with Lackey and Howard I gotta go right

July 17, 2008  05:40 PM ET

I am going right , the arguement was slightly better and the left made a mistake that snowballed to duquesne's arguement. Ya'll should have been arguing Danks vs. Lackey, both of you had Marcum. May have been a clever move on bigd's part but when it is this close, I look for small stuff.
