The Phillies and the Mets. Theyre seperated by a half game right now and could be tied for the divison lead by the end of the night. they play each other 8 more times and play almost identical schedules the rest of the way. Each team is loaded with great player, the Mets have Reyes, Wright, Santana, Beltran, Wagner, and pedro while the Phils have Rollins, Utley, Howard, Hamels, and Lidge. This could go down to the final day of the season again.

I think the Mets win it tho. Thier pitching is just too good and they pull away with the division.

Either the Phillies or Mets will choke it away as usual.

My choice is the AL East. Right now you have the Red Sox up a 1/2 game over the Rays and the Yankees only 6 games back. The Red Sox are looking better as of late, the Rays are coming back to earth after a fantastic first half and you can never count out the Yankees.

The Rays do have a young pitching staff that should be able to keep their teams in the running. The Sox will be getting Ortiz back. And the Yankees will probably make one (if not more) moves to bring in a couple missing pieces to make the 2nd half push that they always seem to make. I believe the winner of this division won't be decided till the final week of the season, with the runner up taking the wild card.

Forfeited Turn

Even after the Mets winning last night (their 10th win in a row against the bottom dwellers of the NL) I still say the AL East will be the best chase.

From here on out, all AL East teams play at a minimum 33 games against other AL East opponents....all 1 team has to do is go on a serious win streak against just the AL East opponents to either put this division away or get back into contention.

There are 2 teams in the AL East - the Yankees and Red Sox that both know that the division isn't won based on what you do in April or May but on what you do in August and September. The teams in the NL East do have a history on their side - a history of historic collapses!

I won't even get into the difference of the title of this TD (pennant) compared to your only argument (division). You win a division title by winning your division you win the PENNANT by winning your league in the playoffs.

Forfeited Turn

Now, the Rays are 1.5 back up over the Sox and 5.5 up over the Yankees.

This has changed in the 3 days since this TD started (see my first argument for what the standings used to be for the AL East).

That's excitement!

boring

NL Central...best 3 teams in the NL all in the same division....Cubs lead, Cards 4.5 games back (and have the wildcard spot) and Brewers 5 games back (.5 games out of the wildcard).

July 17, 2008  10:43 AM ET

Packbrew - I'm sure the cubs and brewers will revert to form and find some way to blow it......they have history on their side.

Well if we're talking 'pennant'...then the debate is simply AL vs. NL. And the answer is the AL.

But as far as divisions are concerned, I do agree with Anti-Nascar. I'll wait and see what mr. stowe cooks up.

July 17, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Totally the AL East. The Sox, Rays, and Yankees will be battling it out until the last game of the season, and the Mets and Phil's can't sustain their level of play. Well the Mets can, but the Phil's pitching isn't up to the task..Just personal opinion.

Waiting to vote but leaning right

good point Moon.....didn't notice that he said pennant in the title but talked about division in his first argument (which is why I talked division as well)

Mets sweep the 2 worst teams in the NL and all the sudden they have great pitching and are the favorites to win the East despite playin .500 ball for the past year or so with a 100+M payroll...gotta love baseball

I dont think they're great, or favorites. They'll be underdogs all season long. But they took 3 in a row in Philly and did what they were supposed to do against bad teams. Despite the pathetic offenses they faced, the Mets pitching put on a historic performance over those 6 games. Those arent my words.

Their pitching ability cant be doubted. Its underperformed, yes. And so has the offense. But as you said..its baseball. Certain Philly fans think the 2007 division win is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and yet they tend to forget the last 2 decades before it.

July 17, 2008  11:20 AM ET

Well for us Phils fans its literally the first time we could celebrate anything in 15 years...soo give a little break lol

July 17, 2008  11:23 AM ET

Nah I appreciate where some of you come from. It was a major accomplishment. But as far as over-reaction goes, I think we're all guilty.

One more thing on Mets pitching...Pelfrey did indeed beat an awful team or 2. But since he was 2-6, he's won 6 straight and basically put opposing lineups on lockdown. 1 start, 2 starts - thats a fluke. But not 6 straight. He's arguably arrived.

(Sorry for hijacking your TD gentlemen)

I'll out you guys because I really dont care.

Stowe's argument was posted at 10:40. Within 4 minutes, 2 of you decided you have seen enough. I dont know the guy on the left and I dont care. But this is really the perfect example of blind voting.

You went to a SB more recently though.

July 17, 2008  11:50 AM ET

if you dont win it its meaningless...

July 17, 2008  02:34 PM ET

why do people post their first argument, then even though I posted mine 5 minutes later have to wait a whole day to do the next argument.

why would you even bother starting the tD if you can't wait 5 minutes to at least get your 2nd argument in?

July 17, 2008  02:34 PM ET

The NL West, definitely. The winner will finish with a losing record, and we'll all be tuning in to see how crap-tastic a division race can possibly be.
